' 2013 / 2014 Audi TT RS (8J) ' Test Drive & Review - TheGetawayer

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Shortly before Christmas Audi gave me the chance to test this misano-red TT RS Coupe with the 6 Speed Manual transmission. Truly one of the nicest driving sportscars I have ever tested on my favourite broads and the autobahn....

Wow, I had no idea these cars sounded this good! Great review Guido! It does sound like it would be a fun car to drive, and really great for those that want all wheel drive in a sporty coupe instead of the rear wheel drive that all the competitors offer. Nice downshifts by the way, haha.

Great review, it's nice to see someone base their review more on public road driving than on track - after all, that's where most people will use the car most of the time. I had the TTS for two years and loved every minute of it, like the RS the power was far more useable than it's competitors. I currently have a BMW 330 and while it sounds great you have to be right up the rev range to get to the power, that basically means you have to be in 2nd gear on most roads because at the top of 3rd you're doing 90mph. I'm planning on moving on to a TTRS in the next year or so and can't wait! Thanks for the review.

I am the proud owner of an '08 TT cabriolet with the 3.2L V6; extremely quick, fun handling and that double clutch Stronic does wonders on our Texas (USA) roads. I think this is one of your best videos, Guido! I'm also learning a lot about camera work and editing from watching your videos. I'm wondering, when you take shots of the car while static, do you normally do it on cloudy days? I find that overcast conditions are better for filming/photography because you don't get the glare of the sun.

Thank you so much, Chris ! I'm really glad you like my videos :) I use a DSLR from Canon to film and with one of those you can fully adjust the brightness of your shot. Big advantage over a camcorder, where you normally don't have these options...Takes some time to learn DSLR videography, but once you've worked with a DSLR, you won't go back :) Get yourself a T3i, they are really low in price now, and give it a try ;) Happy New Year, buddy !

Nice review man. I'm a fan of the TTRS but I think I'd only buy it in a drop top. I'm not sure if that comes in a 6MT though... I'd never buy it in an auto. I currently drive a 12' S4 with a stage 2 GIAC tune and thought of adding a second sports car to the garage and this is a potential contender (in the drop top only) - I'm obviously a big Audi fan... keep up the good reviews man!

I have to say hearing the 5-cylinder engine really takes me back to childhood. Funny enough it is one of the engine sounds I am most familiar with and I just love it. The sound gives an impression of better refinement than either a 4-cylinder or a 6-cylinder. I only guess that it is a result of a 144 degree stroke instead of 180 or 120 degrees. Thanks for the review, was getting worried about you.

Perfect weather for the Quattro system!! That foggy intro was very nice...well done. Nice review! I hope you have the chance to review the A 45 AMG. As for the faster feel comparing to the Cayman or the SLK 55 AMG, in my opinion, turbo cars can trick you a bit with the boost, making you think that you're going faster than you really are comparing to Normally Aspirated engines with similar HP.

Thanks, buddy ! I've been asking Mercedes since September, but they say their fleet is totally booked until April 2014...I don't really believe them if I'm honest ^^ The RS is actually faster than the Cayman and the SLK. Faster 0-100 km'h time even with this manual non-plus car. And the torque is available from 1600 to over 5000 rpm. Pulling from 100 to 160 in fourth gear the TT RS would be faster. I based what I said on a few group tests that I read ;) Greetings, Guido

I traded my Mk1 3.2 DSG for the Mk2 RS manual. It's great road car, which is where I drive it. I bought it on your recommendation. All of the big mag reviews criticize it for understeer, but I find it's perfect for safe, real world fun on public roads. The torque is amazing. I am hoping you will review the new TTRS and compare it to the original. Is the new car really that much better, as everyone is saying, or is the manual the more engaging car despite being less refined? And the new car vs the new 718S would be great too.

Guido, love those downshifts. I'm a BMW guy but would trade in my bimmer's for one of these TT RS's ins heartbeat. You don't get too many poweful manual transmission sportscars nowadays. The 5 cylinder turbo mill is a bonus plus too. Love the videos and I really hope BMW sees your work and lends you a car to review.

Maybe I'll give it one last try and then I will tell you guys about it...Happy New Year, buddy !

Great review!! I really enjoy your real world car reviews. Looking for a new weekend toy and have owned the usual suspects over the past years 911, M3, Maserati…I was keen on getting a 2009 R8 with a manual until I drove a TTRS the other day. Granted the one I drove wasn't stock and had some upgrades, but it made my jaw drop. It felt more nimble and a bit more fun than the R8, definitely quicker than the R8 and the R8 is no slouch. The new TTS looks a bit refined and not aggressive as the TTRS. Does the new TTS have handling dynamics that much different than a TTRS?

  • @TheGetawayer

+chefs thumb Thanks ! Well, I just did a review on the new TTS if you haven't seen it and dynamically its really a step forward. The chassis is more playful, traction is crazy and the steering is better too. I love the engine, but would still wait for the new TT RS to arrive next year to get the five-cylinder with more power. Hope they offer a manual again, that's what I'm hoping for. Greetings, Guido / TheGetawayer

TheGetawayer Yes, I liked your review of the new TTS as well. Sadly no manual will be offered here in the US, plus I find the styling a bit odd (sharp creases with rounded edges similar to the Mk1). The grille sorta reminds me of Ford's new look, plus the lack of a true manual makes me cringe. DSG is a great gearbox, but my daily is already an automatic. However the new interior of the redesigned TT is top notch.

Nice review Guido. Happy new year! I was going to buy a new car last year but here in Canada every manufacturer is intent on killing off every manual option available!! I had my sites on the Audi S3 sedan but no manual. Mercedes doesn't offer a manual. BMW does with the 328i but not with Xdrive or their diesel. Now that I see the TT RS it makes me wonder if Audi will bring an RS3 to NA.....if I have to buy a semi auto I'll probably go for the new Macan. Get that one and flog it for us!!

The Macan is on top of my list and I'll do my best to review one as soon as possible. Greetings and Happy New Year, Kevin !

I agree with the other statements, it is a great sounding car and I would want one in either silver or black but, having said that, the reliability factor with Audi is terrible, I'm serious with my next statement and I'm not exaggerating, in the north east of the US in CT, I literally see one or two new/newer Audi's broken down on the side of the road/highway weekly and that is a high number, I notice Audi's broken down so much that I have to state it!! In the past few years I know 2 people that bought new Audi's, one of the cars broke down so many times that the Audi dealership offered him a new car or his money back, he took the replacement new car and has had no issues and my other friend bought her car new and at under 20K miles the engine broke and had to be replaced.....under warranty and they did give her a free loaner car the whole time which, was almost 5 weeks. I'll give Audi credit for standing behind their product but, it's a gamble when buying a Audi, will I get a good one which is trouble free or will I get a lemon??? Anyways, great video!

Thanks for your comment, buddy ! That really sounds horrible...Don't really know what to answer. All I can do in a car review is talking about the driving experience over a week or two I spent driving these testcars...I didn't had any issues with any Audis I tested so far...And this TT RS was just huge fun, so I hope owners won't have any issues with theirs :)

TheGetawayer Yea, I was basically making a statement on past experience. The problem for me is. I like the look, feel, performance & cost of the Audi's compared to other performance cars and I would really like to buy a new Audi, an S4 or maybe a A5 but, their engineering quality/reliability presents a big problem for me, while the car is under warranty, i really don't care, I would bring the car in and the warranty would cover the issue but, I'm the type of person to keep a car that I bought new for anywhere between 6 to 10 years and Audi mechanical & electrical failures will be extremely costly once the warranty is over so, it's not practical or advisable to buy a Audi for long term ownership, it's not worth the risk in my opinion. I guess my point was that the TT you reviewed is really nice but, Audi reliability is in question and that's to bad, it would be a great car to own but, it's just not worth the risk!. Talk to you later!

  • @therinsig

xnx.ae Actually it's more to do with a German car's finer and more precise thresholds for engineering that requires the car be pampered and paid attention to in certain ways. People who do not regularly service, inspect or utilize their car properly, such as driving it slowly on short distances constantly, are more likely to suffer issues such as carbon buildup or other problems. In the US we expect cars to come in for oil changes every 5,000 miles and that's it -- sadly, not the case with any Germany car, whether it's Audi, BMW or Mercedes.

Unfortunately. we can't even get the 2015 TT or TTS with a manual gearbox here in the States. That's very disappointing, especially considering that 30% of the S5 Coupes sold here are bought with the manual. I think Audi could definitely sell enough TT's and TTS's with the manual here to make it worth their while.

TheGetawayer Really?! Wow. That surprises me. Strange, indeed. I also find it very odd that we can get a manual on the S4 and the S5, but not on the S3. What is Audi thinking? I love the 2015 S5, by the way, especially in black with the "High Gloss Black Package". It sounds intoxicating under acceleration too. That supercharged V-6 is a superb motor, and silky-smooth. I'd really like to see you do a video on that with the manual. Hint, hint. :p Although it's a rather different car, I'm also excited about the new VW GTI. I like the coupe-with the manual, of course. Looking forward to the new Golf R too. The only trouble is that we will have to wait a couple of extra months after it comes here to get the manual version. :( Oh well. Better late than never, as they say. Thanks for getting back to me, Guido. Have a good weekend.

Hello...Is there any Specific reason, Audi uses a 5 Cylinder, as opposed to the Normal 4, or 6 cylinder ?? Do they Just enjoy seeing what they can do w/ a 5, for fun, or Practical purposes ?? Also, how many years ago, did they stop using a 5 Cylinder ?? Sorry, for any Silly Questions... Thank You, for your Trusted Info ):):)

  • @TheGetawayer

Hi David ! Audi has used 5 cylinder engines for a long time and was really famous for it back in the 80s when they won many rallyes with these engines. The engine of this car is actually based on a VW engine used on the american version of the Jetta. The running smoothness is better than the one of a 4 cylinder. Also the sound is very unique as you can properly tell from the video. The cylinderhead on this is inspired by the R8 V10 engine. It's a light engine too that get's massive torque figures with the huge turbo they use. I hope that answers your question. Maybe you get the chance to drive an Audi 5 cylinder one day and I'm sure you'll be very impressed :) Greetings from germany, Guido aka TheGetawayer

Drove the 2.0 TFSI TT a couple of years back. It's a cool little sports car, agile, but didn't excite me. Just like the current generation Scirocco, which rides just like a Golf and suffers from horrible understeer despite having little weight at the front (drove the 1,4 TSI). New sports cars just lack soul. I'd rather drive a Golf 2 GTI than any of these.

First venture into the world of performance vehicles and 2.5 years of ownership later and I still smile every time I turn the key in the ignition. The car is very practical as a daily driver and with the rear seats down there is plenty of space in the hatch to carry just about anything you would need to carry (golf clubs, the dog).
