Nick's contribution to 'rock n roll' is paramount. He, Bargeld, Rollins and Thirlwell introduced a literary dimension that far surpasses their peers.

Absolutely. He didn't introduce the literary dimension to rock n' roll though, Dylan did. And there are others who've done great work in that area-- Lou Reed, Mark E Smith, Van Morrison, Shane Macgowen, Robert Wyatt, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Morrissey etc. Cave certainly carried on the tradition and introduced a very unique, organic sound and vocabulary to rock n roll through Birthday Party and the Bad seeds, as well as that unmistakable 'Nick Cave' delivery, playing the role rather naturally and giving us several moments of sheer brilliance and intensity.

As an Aussie who at one stage lived overseas for some years, I can tell you there is no way you can keep as pure an Aussie accent as Nick has without spending a good amount of time in Australia and/or listening to alot of Aussie media. There is no way around it.

He DOES spend a lot of time with fellow Aussie musicians like Warren Ellis, so that makes sense.

I think I saw him smile! Love him, and I hope he lives forever.

Valiant like a salmon that swims against the tide, this CAVE occupies a very special NICK, there are very few writers, musicians, performers like him in the modern world.

MTV is wrong about a lot but Nick is not really a good songwriter. I can't find but a few decent songs. Actually I have no great songs. I like unique music, I like outsiders, I know Nick is an intellectual with good ideas but lousy melodies.

Good God. For one thing, I was expecting something way meaner, crass and more in line with his song "Scum" in which he viciously excoriated some critic who offended him. Secondly, "one stoned evening" he wrote a letter more poetic and endearing than anything I have ever written in my life. Nick Cave never ceases to impress me.

I honestly don’t believe he has a mean bone in his body. He exudes confidence and always responds intelligently to unintelligent conversation. The man’s very relaxed.

This is great. One very stoned evening, that's hilarious. This is also why I think if he was ever nominated into the rock and roll hall of fame he'd turn it down. MTV should have played his previous albums way before Murder Ballads.That is a fantastic album and so are all of previous ones. I've listened to him since I was about twelve years of age and have never stopped . Have seen him live twice and will again he's fantastic live.

A fascinating man and a haunting writer and performer. His art has grown and grown since The Birthday Party and is occasionally beyond sublime. However, this public reading of a letter reminds me a lot of the passage in Seven Pillars of Wisdom when TE Lawrence can't quite say often enough or loudly enough how the Army wanted to give him a gallantry award but that he was quite against such baubles... If you don't buy into it, don't stand in front of a microphone and tell people how clever/sound/noble you are not to buy into it. It starts to sound like buying into a different bit of it... and just as hungrily. For all that, this man and his music across the years inhabit many of my playlists. Quite a writer. Quite an entertainer.

I remember those days, that video with Kylie was on MTV 24/7, I fucking hated that song/video, shitty song and cheesy video, ugh, kept me from enjoying the good Cave music for the years to come, it scared me away. Started paying attention to Nick again with Grinderman. Latest Bad Seeds albums are amazing, suddenly I was back, listening to the good stuff he has created and going to Cave concerts. Fuck MTV.

It ran me away from Nick Cave’s work as well. I came back. I also discovered a deep love for Blixa’s band Einsturzende Neubauten later in life.

personally i would of rather a person like him receive a fragment of recognition over someone like George Michael. the people that applaud him here are the same people who are appalled when others are not familiar with his work.
