Cool! I recently made my first channel crossing, Maui to Lana'i and back, the shortest, most mellow channel in the islands. A voyage, not a race. I cannot imagine paddling Moloka'i to Oahu. And those wipeouts at the start of the women's race were scary to watch. I've been hit by (much smaller) waves, and water has a LOT of weight and power. Very glad (and surprised) that nobody was seriously hurt.

Peter Nieborak He's saying "Hoe pa'a", which means paddle hard. Some people might translate this as "shut up and paddle". See the invaluable ulukau.org/ Hawaiian electronic dictionary for more info.

Anne Coyle Hi Anne, thank you so very much for your reply. It has solved one of those little mysteries for me. Feel free to fire any questions regarding Austaralia (or anything) my way. All the best in health, wealth and happiness to you. Peter
