Highlights of the Men's Kayak Four 1000m final in which Australia won Gold during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
In 1924 in Paris, flatwater canoeing featured at the Games as a demonstration sport. Canoe and kayak racing became full medal sports at the 1936 Berlin Games. However events were initially limited to canoe sprint until canoe slalom made its debut at the 1972 Munich Games. Slalom racing was not competed again in the Olympic Games until the 1992 Barcelona Games.

    @@jennaelise280 perhaps your legs are relatively the weakest of the muscles used for rowing. Therefore they might tire more quickly than the rest. Might also have to do with not being able to transport lactate acid build-up. Normally when you are an inexperienced the torso and arms are used for more than 40%. If you are doing it right the numbers should be near 60% legs, 30% core/torso/back, 10% arms

    I row so this was interesting to watch. I'm not going to throw too much shade, but it was amusing to watch all those arms flying at the beginning of the race. I also honestly expected slower times, but wow they go slightly faster than olympic fours and eights. I've tried kayaking but I don't do it competitively. This looks fun but I'm assuming you're drained at the end of this. Wish crew races were 1k...

    +Manny P the starts are the most amazing thing to watch. I used to kayak competitively, and while big bunches of boats all racing off at the same time is nerve wracking (no spacing like in the olympics - you've got to pick your own lane and hope you don't get plowed over by another kayak) they're also incredibly exhilarating.

    yeah I love rowing as I am in the elite NZ rowing programme, but i enjoyed watching this too. Seems quite different, but a lot of the fundamentals are the same: speed through the water, fast catches, high rate, clean and smooth around the finish. The main difference is the muscle groups. Rowing is around 65% legs, 25% back and 10% arms. I'd say the kayak uses a bit less legs (still using them tho), a bit in the shoulders and arms and a quite a large sum in the abdomen as there is a lot of rotation from the hips upwards? I may be wrong, but I would like to be educated if I am

  • @pjcho9180

    @pjcho9180

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, thats pretty close, we do use a lot of legs, as they are what initiates the rotation, although we don't need as much power in them as rowers do, they do need to be well conditioned to drive hard for the whole race. We try to focus power generation away from the arms and shoulders, as they fatigue quickly, and like you said, use lots of core and back instead. We use the arms and shoulders primarily as levers to try and transmit as much power from the rest of our bodies into boat speed as possible. Outside of those basics, there is actually a lot of variation between paddlers, especially those who paddle different distances. Lisa Carrington, for example, a 200/500m, paddler, also from NZ, has very different technique to a 1000m specialist like Max Hoff.

    Connor Swims this isn't rowing it's kayaking (I'm a rower so I have no idea, but pretty sure 1000m is a pretty standard kayak distance, not a sprint)

    Im late I know but 200m/ 500m / 1000m are the sprint distances and then you get 2000m and longer distances (depends on which category you're in)

    My team and I would get up to 17km/h in a sprint... But that was in a two man craft which was also a fair bit slower than these K4s. We were also very far from Olympic standard. I'd guess that these can get to somewhere between 20 and 25km/h? Not sure

    Not so much, one because they might want a brief time to rest after the false start. Two, you want to line up nice and straight which you could do by backing up it’s definitely more difficult (especially given it’s a 4 person). And three, they have starting blocks the put the front of the boats into (I’ve not yet had the opportunity to use one but I can images that wouldn’t work well)
