2012 Honda Civic EX-L Long-Term Review, Start Up & Rev, Extended Test Drive

How a current generation civic holds up after nearly 12,000 miles. Despite the grief people have for the car. It's still a competitive small car in the class and I think it's better than the elantra.

This particular civic was shit, that's why they made a new 9th generation one in 2014. IMO the 2006-2011 civic was the best along with the 2014-present one.

I like the Civic too, don't understand why people bash it. Its perfectly fine for what most people need and want out of a car. Frankly, hard touch dashboard doesn't bother me since you're not touching it. What I wish small cars should have are soft touch door sills. People rest their arms on it, and its uncomfy. I'm left handed, so my right arm is usually resting on the center console haha.

My 12 CR-V is 4 months old and has 6700 miles. My 11 Odyssey is 9 months old and has 15,000 ( we don't drive it ) I don't care that my CR-V still uses the 5 speed auto because it's tried and true and believe it or not does 23-27 in the City and 32-35 on the highway!

The dart will still have questionable reliability and likely to have below average resale value. I have not driven one yet but the styling is nice. It depends on your needs. If you are planning to keep the car for a long time I'd get the Civic. However, if you do not plan to keep it for a while, buying the Dart may hurt you when it's time to trade it in as Dodge has not had a great reputation for building small cars.

I have a 2012 Civic Hybrid with leather, which is essentially a civic EX-L with batteries. Its awesome to say the least. 55-70 MPG depending on the conditions. And I put about 1000 miles in 2.5 months so I don't do that much driving. Im not too concerned about the early refresh in 2013 since I already have the hybrid model, as that should hold up well since that, along with the SI, were the only civic models that were significantly different than the 8th gen's that were previous to them

My guess is that the big change for 2013 will be a backup camera and bluetooth on most Civics. A recent press release at one of the auto shows said that for 2013 all honda trucks and 95% or so percent of the cars will have back up cameras. To get those numbers most all of the Civics would need to have them. So I guess that for 2013 all cars execept the Fit and DX Civics will have backup cameras. Bluetooth is necessary because nearly everyone today drives and talks.

Thanks, I wish you reviewed the drivers seat but it would take a week or so to notice it, my 2012 civic is breaking my back and doesnt matter what kind of cushion i use it doesnt help, i hurts so bad i want to sell it. The seat got so many bad reviews it should have been recalled, also no lumbar support. I would think paying over 20grand for a car it would have that option or even an arm rest ! Have any ideas?

Actually the gathered look of the leather seats is more of an upscale look. Plus, those gathers provide more slack in the leather so it actually releives pressure from sitting and therefore it lasts 10 times longer than regular flat leather. Be glad its there. Also, it costs more because they are giving you more material.

in the world of economics, you never get something for nothing. The elantra is cheaper car because it is less substantial and has less dynamics. And its slower and gets worse real world mileage than the civic. You get what you pay for. Just because it may look a little better and have softer interior materials doesn't make it the better car

Honda will be making some significant changes to the 2013 Civic. Changes include the interior material quality, drivability, and handling. Hopefully they recalibrate the EPS and dial in a bit more road feel. That would basically be a software update. The 2013 Civic should be a significantly improved car. Erik Berkman is now the head of Honda R & D and he's the man in charge of getting back Honda's mojo. He is the right man for the job, believe me!

yah I agree with the elantra I still think its a pretty good car not perfect but I am waiting for the civic and i definitely like it more than my friends crappy mazda 3 which is a 2010, I love honda engines I think there fantastic our lawn mower and wood splitter start every time with compliant lol. My 97 impreza with 350km or 217kmiles has never let me down just wish they offered a civic in a hb to broaden the appeal. Like your pilot by the way white looks great with the grey leather.

I've had my car far almost a year (bought in in June 11')... I clock almost 60mi a day so I've racked up the miles! I really like the car as a whole despite what the critics say - aside from the cheap door panels of course:) However, I am trading my EX for an Si in the next week or so. I like Honda's, I like the Civics...I just can't handle the vanilla acceleration from the Auto tranny. And I do agree.. there is some service interrupton with Pandora from time to time.. (I'm on sprint too)

Here is my list of how I like the cars in the compact class if I were to buy one: (all of them with the manual transmission of course) 1. Dodge Dart 2. Chevrolet Cruze 3. Mazda 3 4. Ford Focus 5. Hyundai Elantra 6. Honda Civic (Honestly 5. and 6. are tied because while I like how the Elantra looks better the Honda's interior is better, more fun to drive, and reliable of course) If the Lancer had a better interior it would be number 4, and purely based on looks the 2013 Sentra would be #4 too

I don't understand how someone can pay top dollar for the EX-L model and not get fog lights standard. 20k or more and no fog lights. I forgot, no navigation either. Why is it, that the previous model you could get those two features standard on the the EX-L? I would rather have the Elantra Coupe. I am, though, hopeful for the reworked model. Why are you no longer working at Honda?

Cool review. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the car...pretty dead on with most of my likes and gripes. I have 17k on my Civic... and you mentioned a phrase which I think sums the car up completely: commuter car. For non-car enthusiests who are looking for smooth, reliable, gas friendly travel to and from work = the civic (ex & ex-l) is your car. But if you're hoping for any thrills or fun, it might not be for you..as for not having XM - streaming Pandora via BT is pretty much the same, no?

Great review of your sisters car. I'm the same way about the color of a car, yes I do not like that color. I have a 2012 Civic Coupe in Polished Metal Metallic and it has held up real well after 20,000 Miles. I would probably buy the car again but I would get a Civic Coupe EX-L with Navigation and in the color Crystal Black Pearl. I might talk to the salesman about switching the color from gray to black. I check out an Elantra Coupe I liked it but I like the sound of a Honda's VTEC engine.

The current civic isn't that good as i was hoping it would be. The focus is to heavy, gm and Chrysler are to unreliable. And if is point of buying a car that i personal don't like the interior/exterior and can't get comfortable in. I would buy a fit before a civic cause its super practical and I prefer hb.

oh i agree, i think its much better than the cruze, especially with that 1.4T engine with 160 hp and 184 ft lbs of torque, the cruze's turbo engine looks pathetic compared to that lol

Its true man japanese cars just have better driving dynamics than koreans or american cars. My bro even tells me and he has driven the new focus, elantra, and 2012 malibu. And korean cars are not that much better value

They can't make them fast enough. I bought the last Gen Civic EX-L in 2009 and as much as I thought I like the dash style and engine refinement and road fee, I soon realized how cheap the lack of carpet, door panels scuffed up really bad on the lower part and the dash was plastic the road noise was ridiculous and everyone suffered who sat in the back seat. The civic will last longer Elantra is much cheaper and Hyundai makes deals.trade in time civic is worth more to the dealer not the trader.

Yeah but who floors their car all the time? You can't look at it like that. I mean, the only CR-V of your generation I've rode in is a 2002, and that has the 4AT. The tranny def shifts quicker than the 2011 I ride in all the time tho.
