2011 WRX EJ20x Engine Swap Guide (For Single AVCS Subarus)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Overview:
The EJ20x swap overall has recently received a bad wrap I feel, it is a fantastic budget friendly engine to swap into your Single (Intake Only) AVCS 06-14 'WRX/05-09' LGT or OBXT/04-13' FXT/04-07 STI as long as you follow my outline to properly delete the Exhaust AVCS, without completing this critical step the engine will feel gutless until 3,000rpm and your tuner will hate you. I have done several of these in various Subaru configurations and have yielded overall positive results in all examples. This customer’s WRX will be tuned conservatively on 93 pump gas, however because the 9.5:1 compression ratio these motors prefer e85. Its best to hand select your engine from the importer by compression testing yourself and looking it over before buying. If you are installing this engine in a dual AVCS equipped 08-21' STI, just plug exhaust avcs sensors & solenoids in and run it as is.
It is also a great idea to replace valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals, rear main seal, intake/exhaust gaskets, spark plugs, coolant crossover pipe o-rings, remove oil feed lines banjo bolt filters, etc. while the engine is on the motor stand.

I did the same on my former’05 OBXT. The most important thing when you drilled and tap the exhaust cam ports is avoiding getting metal shavings into the oil ports. I used long Q-tips and Cisco lard to remove the shavings from the oil ports, over and over again till they were completely clean, otherwise they’ll be circulating throughout the motor. I also upgraded the oil pickup tube with a Moroso one.. Also, important: on the ej20x motors, if you kept the usdm ECU, you need to retard the timing on the exhaust cams 7 degrees = 1 tooth to better mimic the timing of the ej255. You should not use the same timing marks as the ej255 or it will be weak on power..

@Mike_44 Great point, I did add a note in the video while timing the engine to turn the exhaust cam gears back 1 tooth like you mentioned. I did this after the fact, off camera after reading up on this matter. I also used a shop-vac to pull the shavings out of the cam ports and sucked fresh oil out the front of the cam which was very effective. Car runs great with the exhaust AVCS deleted and plastic gear in place -1 tooth. Follow up video being posted shortly!

@@Subarukenny_d Did you end up doing the Tuning yourself? I actually couldn't remove the usdm exhaust manifold from the old ej255 motor, so I went with the EL jdm one along with the twin scroll turbo and an eBay aftermarket DP that has a twin scroll flange for the turbo, they turned out great. I also had to end up getting a new O2 sensor which now is mounted post turbo and I am getting some late reading codes maybe because the O2 sensor is now post turbo. Other than that, the engine is working great.

@@Subarukenny_d in the process of doing the same thing just finished plugging the avcs holes. My tuner told me to use the timing marks and not retard the timing if I plug the holes and use the non avcs cam gears. He said you only need to do it if you keep the avcs cam gears.

Great video, thanks for posting! I am doing a similar swap from a ‘10 Legacy GT to an ‘04 Baja as we have discussed already on Facebook. I was going to use my fixed cams in place of the AVCs cams, but it looks simpler to plug the cam ports and use the fixed pulley. I wonder how many degrees off from the original cams the retarded AVCs cams would be set back a tooth? If it’s close enough, I may do that.

A lot of really good information here about the timing, long story short a guy did a bunch of testing of how many teeth to retard and what cam gear to use but ended up finding that -1 tooth for non avcs plastic cam gear and -2 teeth for avcs cam gear (not plugged in). forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=46621944#post46621944

Hey, doing a similar swap but in my 2.5i, bought it blown as a first project car as im in highschool still, going to be buying a ej20y and ive seen some people use their wrx intake manifold, i obviously dont have that as i have a 2.5i, did you just end up using the ej20 intake manifold that came with it? appreciate it

@ashyyah By the sounds of it if you have the factory non-turbo impreza 2.5i you’ll need a completely different engine cause the dohc ej20x/y will not work in your chassis. The JDM engine replacment you are looking for in a 2.5i impreza would be a JDM EJ253 Sohc engine with the egr pipe on driver side head. Yes you’ll want to swap over your usdm intake manifold & wiring harness when you swap this engine in.

Did you do the tap with the cam gear still installed in the head? Or did you remove the cams?

  • @Subarukenny_d

@tomkelly4671 I tapped the ports with the cam in the head. It’s less of a pain to do it this way, just be sure to use a vacuum and suck out all the metal shavings prior to installing the plugs. A bonus is that a vacuum will suck the oil out flushing the ports after you tap.
