Will do. I shook the drive shaft for play and it seems solid. It looks not to be in the trans as if I’m moving at speed and put it in neutral the noise dosent go away or change. It’s in something that’s still spinning which is nearly everything... thanks

So i have a 2011 i recently had the driveshaft replaced and whe. I got it back the driveshaft broke within 5 miles of driving it. so they put a new one in and now im getting sort of a grinding noise when accelerating quickly. Now they are trying to tell me its not from their mess up and send me to a transmission guy. Just trying to figure out if that could have damaged the transfer case when the driveshaft broke. Never had this problem prior to bringin it to them.

They are known for transfer case chain and gears slipping like a bicycle chain changing gears on acceleration..I have a video on that noise, could it have been the shaft change? Don't think so, but why did you change the shaft? But the shaft does attach to the gear in the transfer case..so anything is possible

I have that damn whirring noise. Its a 2015 with 80K on it. Its definitely louder from the driver seat than the passenger. My first thought it was the front diff. I drained the oil and ran a magnet through it and its clean. my though was if its a bearing its got to be shedding metal... The drive shaft is now my thought so thanks for posting the vid.

Dealer would of cost hundreds just to diagnose it. I figured it out for the customer and gave them the choice of what to do with the transfer case if they want to go with a company remanufactored one, have a transmission shop rebuild it or sell or trade the jeep in, customer decided to trade it in.

Thanks for posting this video. NOW I KNOW that the problems I had today are 'normal'! If you don't mind, I have 2 questions: 1. How do you get the transfer case to release so you can turn the front drive shaft to get to the bolts? I can't turn the rear wheel b/c it's up on jack stands on an incline, so the rear wheels are chocked with the e-brake on. 2. Did you have a clunking sound like the mount bushings were worn, or was it something else that caused you to look at this drive shaft? Thanks...Chris

  • @alyoungcuda

The noise reminds me of a slipping chain on a 10 speed bike when you change gears fast..and it only happens on take off with a hard acceleration, but if you coast it from the light or baby it then its fine. My 1st thought was the front differential but I heard it under the seat, so its the chain and gears in the transfer case, it seems to be a common problem. As for spinning the shaft..those back wheels must hang and spin unfortunately...

At 1st I thought it should, I removed the front drive shaft and it did not move. I didn't have the jeep long enough to experiment and remove the rear driveshaft to see if it moves with the front wheel drive way. But fully assembled, it drove but with that noise on 1st take off. Its definitely a bad chain and gears in the transfer case

Chattering when accelerating from a stop..its in the other videos..the reason I removed it is in some 4wd like I a Ford, when the noise is in the transfer case by eliminating the problem shaft it can run on 2wd until you replace the box, but in this case the jeep didn't drive at all even with the rear shaft attached. And the way this shaft was on it had to be destroyed to be removed

  • @alyoungcuda

I’ve heard that if your tires are not perfectly even in tread depth the transfer case will think there is a slippage situation and engage the transfer case. If this happens on dry ground your case is done. When you said electric motor sound that made me think transfer case engagement.
