  • @StephenRamsey

    @StephenRamsey

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you. And the black clip that I believe you are talking about is just holding one of the lines in place that I moved out of the way, and actually you shouldn’t have to replace any of the clips themselves. Once you pull back the silver flashing or cylinder that covers the sensor, you should see the red and black clip attached to the sensor that you are looking for (ECT sensor) that is to be replaced if this video and comments match what troubles you’re experiencing.

    Ok, and I believe I’m a little confused myself. You’re looking for just the sensor online correct? The stock sensor has a gray connector and the one that I installed was Duralast with a blue connector, all of the brands are probably different, but the red and black clip is the only thing that are those colors attached to the vehicle, the sensor will not be black and red. Am I understanding correctly or am I still missing something in communication? And thank you for the time reference to point that out!

    Is this the same as the IAT? Code P0113? I have both showing up on my 2011 - P0128 and P0113

  • @StephenRamsey

    @StephenRamsey

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hey Michael, the P0113 code leans more towards the IAT sensor which reacts to the negative temperature and also work with the ECM to monitor the air temperature that the engine is processing. I’m not 100% sure if the 2 codes are related but I could see where they very well could be with it being a Jeep or Dodge. If you don’t mind taking the time to change the sensor out (literally taking your time to back out the old one and slowly put the new one in and then let the engine warm up for about 5 minutes at idle, then I’d drive it around easily to your local auto parts store and have the code checked again to see if any code has dismissed itself. Hey Oscar, it really depends, unfortunately I have not found an easy way, so if you do please share! You can do like I did and move the lines/vacuum lines out of the way and pin them back gently with a bungee cord, work your hand back there to uncover and unhook the sensor, then with the right extension, socket and socket wrench easily back out the old sensor, then reverse the procedure of course putting the new one in. Or if you’re doing your spark plugs as well, go ahead and get the upper plenum gasket kit and just remove the plenum when you change your plugs to be able to get to the back of that head. That would be the easiest way that I could find. If you aren’t doing your plugs at the same time, the way I went about it was the easiest for me at the time. Wish I would’ve just changed my plugs at the same time honestly! Great question!

Looks like the first one is a straight thread with a gasket and the second one is a tapered pipe thread with some thread locker on the threads.

    @@StephenRamsey That's happening because of the P0128 error code. An ODBC reader will allow you to clear the error message (temporarily) and your remote will work, until the engine light comes on again. If you repeat this 10 times, the error message is stored in a "permanent" area and everything goes back to "normal".

    Hey banshee107, I actually replaced this sensor and my thermostat at the same time to be safe just in case this code caused any issues to it. Drove it a short distance and the CEL went off. Mine wasn’t over heating but if you haven’t changed the thermostat I know they will throw some odd codes on the 2012 models on their own and they’re fairly inexpensive. But it does make a mess and you’ll need a little more of the OEM antifreeze from the dealer to top it back off.

    I own the same vehicle and just replaced the thermostat due to a p0128 code. It definiteley takes less time for the car to warm up, but now the radiator fan turns on too late, 228F, which is past the half point on the gauge. Obviously when the car is moving, temp is fine around 200 (cant remember exactly). My check engine light is off but the code is still stored when scanned, even if i delete it, it instantly shows back up. I figured I'll try this as well and see the end result. Did you drain the coolant before replacing the ect?

  • @StephenRamsey

    @StephenRamsey

    5 жыл бұрын

    It will most likely continue to store that code until the sensor itself is replaced but I bet that light when off since the thermostat is doing what it can to help the engine properly cool in a way that doesn’t trigger it. But if the sensor is bad you may run the risk of damaging the new thermostat as well. As long as the engine is cold, you shouldn’t have to do anything to the fluid when changing the sensor since there’s no pressure behind it. You shouldn’t have any fluid flow out either when you take the old sensor out. Just as I mentioned in the other comments, take as much time as you need to back the old one out slowly, which you kind of have to since it’s hard to get to, and take your time easing the new one in not risking breaking the plastic clip. Hopefully this helps and if it doesn’t let me know if I can help explain in a different way! Thanks for the question and viewing and please feel free to share and subscribe if this video helped!

    What are the symptoms when this sensor goes bad?

  • @StephenRamsey

    @StephenRamsey

    4 жыл бұрын

    So a few things could happen, first off either a temp sensor is going to throw a code, or the most common is the check engine light is going to come on. Once it comes on, it may throw the P0128 code that refers to the cooling system. If you don't have any leaks and you have the proper mixture of coolant, and the correct coolant for the vehicle, then it doesn't leave much other than the thermostat and this sensor that could be reading incorrectly, or they could have gone bad. The thermostat is about the same price as the sensor, and they're made from a plastic type material for the housing, so it doesn't exactly hurt to go ahead and replace that while you've got everything pulled apart. This sensor is kind of a whole other animal to get to and replace, but you can do it yourself for about $25-$50, or pay the dealership $500 to do it for you. It really just takes time and patience to replace. But back to your original question, it's going to throw some type of code reading the temp gauge, and if you've ever had a check engine light on, I'm sure you've noticed the vehicle performance depreciates and the vehicle just doesn't act right, especially these newer vehicles that have all of the sensors and computers operating so many components.

And the easiest ways I find to test fans is to purchase one from Autozone or a local parts store that you can return it to if needed, swap it out and start it up, once that thermostat opens up around 170-180 degrees(should be able to watch this on the digital display) it should kick right on. If not, a bad sensor or thermostat could have still caused an issue with the fan so I wouldn’t entirely rule it out. I know this is a pain but it beats $500-$1000 at the dealer to figure it all out. Sorry this is a bit long, but I feel like a little more info for this particular deal is warranted, the info on this issue is shockingly absent. While I'm grateful Stephen made this video because it's literally the only one out there for this engine (same engine as the 3.6L dodge durango), I have a few things to add. I really hope I'm not the only person out there that is thoroughly cussing Chrysler after tackling this. EVERY other video I watched for other vehicles coolant temp sensors, the sensor is conveniently located at the top front of the motor where you just pop it off and slap a new one on - even some other Chrysler vehicles. Rest assured, you'll have no such luck on your 3.6L V6. I moved ALL of the electrical lines out of the way and the two A/C lines that run right by the sensor were still the biggest problems. I'm no mechanic so I didn't mess with them but if you have a buddy with the knowledge and the A/C stuff move those too - this would've turned my 8 hour job into about a 1 hour deal. I cut through the first two barb fasteners that zip tie the elec. wire down, but then tried to start prying them with a screw driver and a small open ended wrench and this worked extremely well - and the fasteners went back in afterwards and held, even though they look pretty funky after prying. Also, on the wire side of the electrical connector, as Stephen showed, it's red/black - all you need to do is press the little black tab in the middle down and pull the connector back, I actually did this from underneath and it was the easiest part of all this. Now I dont know if the durango is more congested or if I just have big hands/arms, but it was a nightmare to get back into that area, especially for tightening the new sensor down. I don't know what the torque specs are, but I kept finding online that it just needs to be hand tight - I could never get more than two fingers on anything back there, much less my thumb too, so I used the ratchet and probably over tightened it (of course I don't have a torque wrench). While a couple of people have said this in their comments, I'll go ahead and reiterate it in case someone reads this long ass post - it's a 19mm DEEP socket. If you noticed in the video when Stephen showed the sensor, the electrical connection sits above the hexagonal socket area. Other than that, I advise you stretch thoroughly beforehand. I'm 33 yrs old, did some light stretching, and I was CONSTANTLY in an awkward position that I'll pay for tomorrow. I hope what I discovered can help somebody tackle their issue too.

This may be a stupid question, but is this just like a plug and play thing (I.e. do I just unhook the wiring, remove the sensor, put in the new sensor, then plug the wiring back in)? Or is there extra things I need to do as well (like do I need to drain/replace any coolant, do I need to unplug/replace any wiring besides what runs into the sensor itself, or do I need to unplug the battery when I’m done to reset the computer)? I’m utterly at a loss when it comes to stuff like this so I usually need everything spelled out. Sure would appreciate any advice!

    Thursday October 26, 2023 Most everywhere here has a shelter in place order due to a massive manhunt for a mass murderer who went on a shooting spree last night killing 16 to 22 and injuring 13 to 60 people. Sadly none of the news outlets have an accurate count and the authorities haven't released a statement with the actual numbers. At this point we can only say a prayer for the victims and their families. Hopefully, the murderer is apprehended soon. --------------------------- On my 2012 JGC Overland removing the fender lining is useless. There is no access through there. After I inspect the brakes, reinstall the tire and lower the vehicle I will go in through the top. My plugs retaining clip is different. I may have to remove the intake manifold to release the clip. It’s tuckedddd in there. I pulled the plenum cover, and then took a clip puller and pulled a lot of those lines and wires off of their mounts and pulled them all back (carefully) and it’s basically where you can get your arm far enough back and down and you should feel that cylinder like, aluminum looking cover that just slides up since the wires go through it.

    John King been trying to make sure to record correctly since then. This was actually an accidental video since there wasn’t another one online and I didn’t expect it to take off like it did. I also don’t shoot with a phone anymore if I can help it unless the camera batteries are dead. But thanks for the positivity and viewing and hope this video helped!

    Also, just a note, if you view it in the app, it does fill up the frame based on the position. Take care!

    I apologize for not responding sooner. I did not see your message come through. This sensor sends signals along with the thermostat over to the ECU to inform you if the engine is not cooling properly, thus possibly leading to engine damage or overall failure. It also speaks with the fan at your radiator to switch on or off depending on if the coolant is at operating level to keep the engine cool enough to function at standardized performance. If the fan does not get a signal that the engine is heating up beyond where the fan needs to engage, the fan may not engage at all. You will find this sensor on cars, many liquid cooled motorcycles, 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, and many other liquid cooled engine machines. Thanks for your time and great question!

    Arrrrgh ! I still can’t see it, much less put a tool on it 😡. (Even tried from the bottom) May the engineer that put the etc sensor there suffer terribly in some way !

    Post 2004, I couldn’t agree with you more! I know 2004 and earlier had their fair share of issues, but most of my inline 6’s did me very well over the years.
