    I saved an old IN 82 from the scrap heap a few years ago. I will be using it for the 1st time on a real field this week harvesting wheat up here in Maine. I sure hope mine works as good as yours. I'd love to see another video of this years harvest from you. Thanks for the vid.

    @@FarmallFanatic it worked very well after an Amish friend helped me adjust it properly. Biggest issue was so the bearings were sealed and I couldn't grease them.

    @@throwback336a needle tip for the grease gun is the ticket for that. You can buy a lot of bearing life that way. Or at least enough to finish the harvest😅

    Fantastic rig .

    Slowish but eminently suitable for the scale of the operation . . . as well as flinging up considerably less dust (field fertility?) than more modern machines.

    Anybody else think that reel speed is INCREDIBLY fast??

  • @HayHill82

    That is as slow as I can set it. The settings are maxed out. As I got familiar with running the 82 I uncreased the ground speed to match the reel speed.

    Maybe to much throttle on the PTO ?

    For a 6-spine PTO shaft, the standard is 540 RPMs. All the speeds of all the shafts, augers, sieve shakers, etc. are based on this standard 540 rpms. This is a good stand of beans so increasing ground speed to match reel speed would help; but so years the beans may lean or ground contours not allow higher ground speeds. My guess is that the engineers did not allow for slower reels speeds; but a good mechanic could retrofit some different size pulleys to slow down the reel. When I was growing up, we had an 82. We used it for windrowed oats. We had to retrofit a pickup from an older 76 combine onto it. To get the right RPM on the pickup it was a matter of trying various sizes of final drive and final driven V-belt pulleys.

    Is the reel belt or chain driven? You could slow it down by using a larger pulley or sprocket.

    Yeah...reel is going too fast here. I think you can change the pulley width to change the reel speed.

    What do you think would be the minimum horsepower required to run that machine?

  • @HayHill82

    @HayHill82

    HI, It was designed to run with an IH H or M so a 55hp tractor should have no problem with it. It does get heavy on the tong as the bin get full so weights or liquid in you tires would be a good idea. Thanks for watching. Gary

    @@HayHill82 In my high school and years after I ran our IH 82 for oats harvest. The grain bin is centered over the combine axles so a full bin does not affect tongue weight. The bin was only 25 or so bushels so that was only around a 1000#. We never needed wheel weights. We welded a triangular frame hitch to tongue which folded up for road transport and down for pulling a wagon along side. You could not turn sharply to the left otherwise left tractor tire would hit the hitch; but right turns were not a problem. We could get 6-7 bin dumps onto one wagon. You definitely could tell that the tractor had more pep when the full wagon was replaced with an empty. I had a JD3020 with rollbar cab pulling the IH82 combine. The lever for turning on and off the unloading auger was a problem to reach. Opening the rear cab window would flood the cab with dust and it was an awkward reach anyway. The IH82 requires one remote hydraulic cylinder for lifting and lowering the pickup. I jerry-rigged a second hydraulic cylinder on the brackets that were welded to the tongue for the wagon hitch. Through a system of ropes, pulleys, and springs the secsond cylinder would push and pull the lever that engaged and disengaged the unloading auger. I could sit in air filtered comfort regardless a which direction the breeze blew the dust. This was before AC in cab. My uncle ran the second combine, a Case “A” with its own engine, pulled by a JD620. That rig also had an triangular folding hitch for pulling a wagon along side. My dad did the hauling for both combines. It kept him busy. Since the unloading auger dumped about 1/3 the way from the front of the barge box trailers, we learned to dump as we went up hills. The oats would side towards the back more. When the bin was empty we would momentarily stop while going uphill and then pop the clutch. This would make the oats jolt to the rear of the trailer. When the front of the wagon was full to nearly overflowing, we would go until the combine bin was full. We would stop, unhitch the wagon, back up the combine a few feet and dump in the rear of the trailer. The trailer was full to the max. We would continue combining until Dad would bring us an empty trailer. This was how dumping-on-the-go was done with pull type combines.
