I have 200k on my 2010 and sounds exactly the same and has for a long time. Impeccable maintenance all done at MB. It must just be normal. Never any codes, engine strong and smooth as ever. It is annoying in the drive thru, just echoes.

It’s Mercedes’ signature sound don’t worry about it. Had it on every Benz I owned. Some of them were Diesel engines made to run on gas

There is no such thing as a diesel engine that is made to run on gas. Diesel engines are built way stronger to handle the compression ignition.

@Itwargssf R Hey, amazing mileage! Did you have to do any major repairs on the engine? Like intake manifold, timing chain, etc? I'd appreciate your advice on what to pay attention to as I can see, that you have a lot of time spent with this engine. I knly recently got one with the same engine, except it's an E-class, also 2008. I'd appreciate it if you'd share your experience with me, I want to keep my car running strong for years to come.

@@martonmisik886 I got lucky iwht my intake manifold and it lasted a long time. I strongly urge anyone with a mercedes to get the product called 303 Aerospace Protectant and spray it once or twice a year on all the plastics in the engine bay. My 2008 had all original plastic parts like radiator. intake/vacuum lines because I did it. The intake manifold can fail on these cars, if it does, don't play around in fixing it but invest the 700$ for the new entire manifold and be done with it.

@@Motorsportsgeek Thanks for the reply! I already replaced the manifold with a factory new one, so that should last a long while. I will order some of this protectant as well. And should I worry about the timing chain or the balance shaft? Mine is the reinforced one already but I still heeard the timing chain can stretch on these. Did you have any issues related to that?

Best thing u can do is have a trusted mechanic open both valve cover, be there when its taken off. Take a look at the cams, hydraulic lifters and tensioners. One of these guys will be your culprit. But based on the wear or money involved in fixing the problem, u can decided to go ahead with it or ignore and use 5w40 high mileage oil.

Don't listen anyone here who is blaming mercedes engine being bad or wrongly designed. They don't know what are they talking about. This is one of the best engine in the market. Just take your to a mechanic and go from there. Don't listen anyone here. It is not easy to find where the source is for the noise on cars. Experienced ears could understand. just take it to mechanic. In turn share here what was the culprit.

Stumbled across this. I have a 2011 e350 4matic 3.5l gas with 102k. Has had regular oil changes with Mobil-1 or Amsoil 5w40. Runs strong, no CEL light. Has had this exact same noise since 28k miles when I got it. Been to the dealer ten times back in 2014. It is not cylinder scoring, they sent a camera down the cylinders to check. Back then they replaced my entire exhaust under warranty. Still had this noise. Ive been told its the timing chain tensioners that need replaced. Ive been told its the lifters. Not sure anybody really knows.

May I add my car now burns oil at an excessive rate (1qt- 600 miles) and smokes on startup. The smoke dissipates to nothing after it is all warmed up. Sounds like a piston slap or the wrist pins have too much slop. At this point, you could try some snake oil to keep your car going as long as possible. Some people swear by doing Liquid Molly Engine Flush and getting an OEM filter with a heavy oil after the flush. That should quiet the engine a little bit. The oil burning could be from the PCV system which is known to crap out and allow more oil into the intake under load.

Still have the car I don’t have anymore noise and it’s running fine thank you. Turns out it’s one my favorite cars I’ve been a long BMW owner and this is the first Benz I’ve owned and can say I’ve had no problem at all with the car. I can’t say that about my BMW’s when the snow melts and it warms up I will post another video

On my car I changed the oil and used a product called Lucas synthetic oil treatment in place of 1 quart of oil and the sound is almost gone except on cold days when I first start the car. I also found the reason this happened is the prong on the dipstick tube where you check the oil had worn out and at higher rpms it would push oil out of the dipstick tube causing an oil leak that was not visible or dripping when I shut the car off. The fabric along the fire wall was absorbing the oil. Since this video I have put about 10k miles on the car and have had no issues at all. I hope this helps you.

I hate to give you bad news, but I owned the same exact car. Same year, same engine. Mine did the same thing. And I mean literally I was listening to your engine and heard the identical noises coming from your engine. The problem is cylinder scoring in your cylinder walls. That means poor maintenance by the previous owner not keeping up on oil changes. These cars are the worst to get underneath and change the oil because there is so much shit under there to remove first. So people have no choice but to bring their Mercedes to a dealer and get charged a shit load of money for an oil change. This is why oil changes get ignored on these cars and these pathetic engines go to shit and start knocking. There is nothing you can do about it sadly. It is caused my poor engineering on behalf of Mercedes Benz. Shame! That is why you see so many of these cars for sale. There is no fixing it. If your car is a high mileage car, just drive it and learn to deal with the noise or just do what I did and get rid of it before it thins your wallet. I sold my E350 and took a huge loss. The car is gone now and I am still paying for it! Your engine will not blow up, it will just continue to knock. Sorry to tell you all of this but I just got out of that exact situation. Customers should have sued Mercedes Benz for making an engine that fails like that. Sorry for all of the profanity but when I found your video, it brought me right back to my nightmare. If you have any more questions do not hesitate. I am here for you brother.

I never tried Lucas, but then again I didn't have the car long enough. If you put thick oil in that engine, you might make it worse. Mercedes engines usually require super thin oil. Is this the person in the video I am chatting with?
