    It's funny, I had a transmission bearing issue because of the primary chain adjuster. I replaced all the bearings in the transmission, and replaced the automatic chain adjuster with a Baker manual adjuster. My procedure was much the same as yours in replacing the adjuster. After all the oils warm up, you hear nothing but the shifting drum moving when I put it in gear after waiting for a traffic light. I enjoyed your video.

    I have a 2010 Heritage. I know it is not a CVO but it is a great bike. The only oil that I have ever run since Harley break in oil is Amsoil ONLY. Beats all other lubes hands down. Try it, you may like it. They make 20-50 for the engine plus filter. They now have fluid for primary and separate for transmission. About $100.00 for all.

    Jerry Hubbard thanks for your comments and thanks for watching. Oil opinions are very subjective in case you haven't noticed. Some think because they have run brand X and have not experienced any adverse issues it must be the absolute best oil on the market. I have been a mechanic for 3 decades now and have had good results with many various brands and some not so good results with particular lubricants in that time frame. Me personally I am just not as big of a fan of Amsoil as others. That's just my opinion and I am sure there are some that will disagree. Mike.

    After a lot of independent research, I find that Amsoil is best for me. Sure, there are many brands and many opinions but Amsoil only makes lubricants as most other companies, it is a side product. Not sure at this time but I know HD oil was made by Sonoco. I have never been a fan of HD oil. There again, many opinions and whatever you like, fine by me.

    Jerry Hubbard I can say I truly agree. I've used Mobil 1, and Mobil 1 is an excellent engine oil. What I noticed is that my oil pressure when at operating temperature is about 3 to 5 lbs. greater when waiting for a traffic light on a nice hot day. This is my first Harley Davidson. I've had this 2009 FLHX Street Glide almost 2 years now. I really like it, and became very familiar with it in the time I've had it. I use Amsoil in all 3 cases, I use the 75/90 in the transmission, and 20/50 in the primary and engine. Like I said in my earlier post, when waiting for a traffic light. When it's time to put it in gear, all you hear is the shifting drum turning. No clunks, AT ALL!

    This coming Wednesday, I was to have my 96 inch upgraded to a 103 big bore kit. After much research, I am not going to just have them put in the SE-255 cams. What I read is the upgrade of the pistons and jugs is such a small amount that the cams are the way to go to get more torque. I was talking about the upgrade about the 103 and with having to run another 500 miles for break in, they recommend dinasoar oil. I told them that I have had Amsoil in this engine for the past 4 plus years. He said we would rather run the HD oil as Amsoil was synthetic. I told him I really did not want to mix the oils. But to keep on the good side of the warrantee, I said ok. Now that I am not going to have new rings put in the engine, I will run my Amsoil. I really don't think he is right about this as they sell synthetic for HD's I don't see a problem with a break in of the cams as the rings would require. Another thing HD does is pull the cam rockers instead of adjustable push rods. I have had both in the past and I don't have any plans to make any other changes to the engine, I will take the HD push rods over adjustable.

  • @zmotorsports62

    @zmotorsports62

    7 жыл бұрын

    Jerry Hubbard I've run those cams in several engines and have been very pleased with the results as well. I agree the slightly larger bore is going to net marginal gains compared to the benefit of the cams. When I was building race engines I always ran petroleum oil for break in prior to switching to synthetics for ring seating purposes. If your not changing cylinders/pistons/rings you should be fine to continue with the synthetic. Personally I'm a fan of adjustable pushrods though, but that is just me. Mike.

    gsfinatic I have not opened it back up but there should really be no need to. This is no different than the OEM Harley style that has been in use for many years. I have seen where you can go through the Derby cover with a long screwdriver and check the free play.....after I read that and know it is possible.....I am going to install one...was going to go with the Haden....but have realized the Baker is the way to go....

  • @tomcata1467
    @tomcata14677 жыл бұрын

    In my opinion, you should ditch the SE compensator and replace it with a Baker Compensator along with the Baker manual chain tensioner. You should go Baker all the way.....the stock primary chain comes way to tight from the factory and wears out the SE or noisy, stock compensator pretty quickly. Also, keep an eye on the cam side Roller Chain Drives, with their PLASTIC cam chain tensioners, which are designed to wear out, and failure to change out the worn cam chain tensioners, will crater the engine, due to metal to metal contact between the hydraulic tensioner and the Roller Chain, and the metal shavings will kill the engine. Also, you should check the pinion shaft max run out while you pull the cam support plate to check or change out the cam chain tensioners. Run out should not exceed, 0.001" or less, if the run out shows, more than that, for example, 0.003", of run out, it shows that the pressed together crankshaft has already twisted out of true, and you are on the way to cratering the engine. Only solution is to tear the engine down, pull the crankshaft assembly and have it balanced, dynamically trued and TIG-weld the Welch Plugs and set the output shaft and pinion shaft to 0.001" or less of max run-out. All Twin Cams run very hot, as evidenced by your rear cylinder heat shield, so, keep the oil changed regularly.......

    You want to take the measurement on the side opposite the tensioner as that is where the stress is. The highest stress point is directly between the drive and driven sprockets in direction of travel when the drive sprocket is pulling directly against the driven sprockets. Hope that makes sense. I had that POS M6 in my 124" Roadking for a few months. I took the primary cover off to change the clutch & found the M6 nylon shoe had broken into about 4 pieces (one piece fell out when I removed the primary cover), this is a well documented problem. I found out later that a friend of mine had the same thing happen & with his the small pieces got behind the rotor & trashed his alternator stator. I have been a Harley wrench for over 40 years. Even though the M6 worked fine in a 2001 Heritage I had, the newer version is absolute junk. I threw it out & installed the attitude adjuster.

    Why in 2017 & 2018 does Harley-Davidson still use a high maintenance chain primary drive system? It’s clear by the redesign of a new motor that gears are better with Harley-Davidson except for the chain primary chain, why they put that system on a new motor who knows. A gear drive primary system is what Harley-Davidson needs to go to and will go to if they want to technology wise survive, and with a gear drive primary they can keep the same primary cover as is for traditional appearance.

    All wrong. The right way to adjust chain tension is to have the chain and shoe surface oily VERY OILY, then adjust shoe to about a half inch in the center of the chain on top and then turn your clutch hub until you get the highest slack in the upper center of the chain and THEN adjust to specifications. If you had done just one full turn with that chain with oil on it, more than liey your upper looseness would have increased by a full half inch or more. So you will be running with twice the specs clearance the way you did it. I assure you that you will be running double the slack. Also, you people are making fools of yourself for the thin oil youre using in these cases. 50 to 80 straight weight
