2010 2.2 Ford Transit Glow Plugs Replacement Gone Wrong, glow plugs snapped off in cylinders 1 and 2

2010 2.2 Ford transit glow plugs snapped off in cylinders 1 and 2. Tried multiple things before having to take the dead off.
let them soak in brake fluid to break up the carbon that caused them to snap and turn the engine over to hopefully push them out the head - failed.
drill and tap a thread into the glow plug and pull out with a puller - failed.
take out the injector and fish it out with a magnet - failed.
In the end, had to remove the cylinder head and replace the gasket and all gasket associated with removing the head, the timing chain on this one had recently been done so was no need to replace the chain.
Special tools require was just the timing tool kit you can buy off amazon for £20-£30.

I’ve been in this trade nearly 40 years now, you did a good job in the open air workshop in winter. The only advice I’ll give you is don’t work for free, warn the customer that these things can happen and if it does, it does. You can always offer to sub out the blokes who specialise in removing glow plugs, injectors etc if the customer wants to pay the price. Most won’t from experience. Work at a reduced rate if you wish, but not for free, it’s not your vehicle and you didn’t break it, it’s a risk with these modern pencil glow plugs. Remember it will always be your fault even when it isn’t that’s just people and the modern world for you. Good luck to you

Fair play to you! I am also a mobile mechanic, and every time I am asked to do a set of glow plugs I warn the customer of the risks. I also have an email/text conversation with them so both the customer and myself can refer back to what we have agreed. I have been lucky - I snapped a few on a Range Rover with a bmw engine in it, and I got a local glow plug removal firm to remove them for me. The guy was talented at his job for sure! I couldn’t do what you just did at the side of the road, I would stress myself out too much! I would have to cancel the rest of the weeks work, and have it taken somewhere I could work inside and leave it in bits if required. Well done and keep up the good work!

Quick tip - Try to tighten the glow plug slightly first. This usually breaks the bond that forms between the steel threads of the glow plug and the aluminum threads in the head. Tightening first works better as the twist exerted on the plug deforms it slightly and actually makes it contract ever so slightly, whereas undoing it may not. You are also less likely to get a situation where parts of the thread inside the head being to break off as they become welded to the plug. Another tip is to take your time! It doesn't mater if it takes you half an hour of gently working the plug back and forth to get it out, it's still faster and cheaper than removing the head! Just remember not to put too much pull on it at any point.

Done a couple of heads off due to broken glowplugs on the infamous nissan navara D22 and D40 YD25ddti in the last winter season. Owners breaking them trying to do them at home. Always use anti seize on threads when putting new in. When customers want their plugs done by us we give them a can of good spray penetrating lube and give the plugs a spray each day for a week then get the engine nice warm and remove while hot. 99% success rate getting them out without too much trouble.

I found a trick for removing glowplugs on my VW 1.9TDI-rather than apply loads of force and they just snap, use a box key and socket with a bit of play on the end driving the box spanner with a heavy wrench-and bounce the wrench back and forth on the box spanner-with the slightly oversize socket, gives it a small impact and all four came out using this method and they had been in 15 years!

Hello from Hungary 😁 A good way to avoid glow plugs from snapping is to loosen them with a torque wrench, as it clicks before they would break. I mean it'll start even if 1 plug didn't come out, but at least that one is still intact, and you can continue spraying at it or ignoring it 😅 NGK has a great tutorial video here on youtube with the correct maximum loosening torque by thread diameter

Ouch!! - So I am right in thinking the body came out and the electrode stayed in? if you get that again - you can get an electrode kit - but you can utilise the body so do not throw it away and you will need some old metal brake pipe to make a sleeve to put inside the GP body - which should allow you to use the 3.3mm drill bit which comes with the kit - then drill and tap it - thread it with the nut and pull bar which comes with that and you should be able to get the next one out…..👍

Not free labour, not my fault that glow plugs and injectors sieze to the head. I always offer to sub in a specialist to remove suspect ones, customers choice👍

There are 18 head bolts in total. We only seen you torque up 10. There is a jump cut and no mention of torquing up the other 8. If anyone is using this as an instructional video please dont. The torque sequence shown is not correct. The correct settings and sequence is as follows. From the service manual. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in eight stages. Stage 1: Tighten bolts 1 through 10 to 10 Nm. Stage 2: Tighten bolts 11 through 18 to 5 Nm. Stage 3: Tighten bolts 1 through 10 to 20 Nm Stage 4: Tighten bolts 11 through 18 to 10 Nm. Stage 5: Tighten bolts 1 through 10 to 35 Nm. Stage 6: Tighten bolts 11 through 18 to 20 Nm. Stage 7: Tighten bolts 1 through 10 to 45 Nm. Stage 8: Tighten bolts 11 through 18 to 26 Nm. Stage 9: Tighten bolts 1 through 10 to 90 degrees. Stage 10: Tighten bolts 11 through 18 to 90 degrees. And always replace the head gasket with the same notch number you took off. Or check piston pertrusion with a dial indicator and look in the service manual for the correct thickness gasket required.
