200cc Shifter Kart Top Speed Run (70+ mph!!)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We’re testing the top speed of the 200cc Lifan 5 speed shifter kart on a secluded stretch of road. We were expecting a top speed of 120+ miles an hour, but we were severely limited by gearing. The Lifan also needs performance modifications to achieve a speed of 100+ mph, as drag becomes a serious factor above 60 mph on these racing karts.

Those tires are not "rated" for anything. But they are the same racing tires they use on shifter karts that do actually run over 100mph. So you'll be fine.

Most racing kart tires are rated for around 110 MPH continuous. As 125cc karts run 105 regularly, that's sufficient unless you run a 250 or dual 125.

I wouldn't pull over... lol i mean really why? 1st off if you did you would more than likley lose your license and go to jail depending on the state riding this thing on the road at speeds over 50 is not only speeding but reckless driving endangering lives of pedestrians and other drivers no tags no insurance and maybe a few others i cant think of off the top my head but its not much different than getting caught doing wheelies in some states that alone you will lose bike license and freedom at risk

Just like the last one you should mitigate drag. At speeds over 55mph, aerodynamic drag exceeds rolling resistance and friction as the dominant source of wasted power.

I agree, I was wondering if even a simple plexi deflector to get air over the wheels and drivers helmet wouldn't give a few mph. Its sort of a lay down cart but still like you say the loses to wind get very real at speed.

  • @lennym1273

  • @tiporari

Lenny M The precise speed varies with frontal area, rolling resistance, the coeeficient of drag, etc. It could be lower, 55 is the figure that applies to most light cars and trucks. What matters is that well within the performance envelope of that vehicle, drag will overtake friction as the loss leader. This effect is visible when Ike drives as initial acceleration is unaffected but near top speed vehicle acceleration decreases visibly even without the aid of precise timing or instrumentation. It matters for sure. That's why even race karts have some aero mitigation on them. It is essentially free performance left on the table otherwise. A 25mph yard kart? Who cares. Something exceeding 50 or 60mph? Oh yeah, you betcha.

My suggestions: -Move the axle to the rear maybe 3" and add a center bearing (that will help the "dartiness" and add weight bias to the front) -If you are changing the motor mounts, move the motor faster outboard away from the driver. -Double discs for the brakes. -Add a simple "number plate" drivers faring coming up the steering wheel shaft. That will help direct air over the drivers head and around his body/shoulders. Even better step and front down force could be obtained with a circle track type nose but one of those would last long on a "yard kart". The nose and drivers faring can be sourced cheaply on Craigslist or eBay.

A turnbuckle between the rear bearing hanger and the upper motor mount bolt will fix the chain coming loose. Set the tire pressure at about 10 psi cold. The ride will be better and a little less "darty". Set the toe-in to zero and balance those tires. You can use the front wheel hubs to do all the tires. Just prop the kart up so the front axle is level, make sure the wheel bearings are free to spin and let the tire roll until it stops at it's heavy point. Then take some stick on wheel weights on the high side. Turn the wheel 90 degrees and see which way is spins to. Keep adding weight until just sets still when you let the wheel go. All of the other wheels can be done on the same hub. The gearing seems about right. Our racing 15 hp engines will do high 70's/low 80's mph with one speed. Your gears just make it a lot more fun to get there!

More castor in the front may make it more stable. Skip the clutch after first. Wear leathers and gloves. You may wish you had. I had a KLX 250 and it would do right at 90 fully tucked in and a Ninja250 twin cylinder did about 100. I dont see the cart doing 120 with air resistance. Maybe 90 with a ton of work and some aero. Good Luck.

Ok. Having raced karts in the past you definitely need a centre bearing on that rear axle for those speeds. It will tighten the handling and axle harmonics up dramatically. In all fairness that motor needs to go out over the right side of that from on solid mounts so you sit square in the seat. Thats also not helping your handling. I said it last video & I'll say it again - time to invest on two front brake kits. Someones gonna get hurt. No insurance, no rego & no title - you guys we ill go down so get smart and start at a track. Dont wanna see either of you dudes in cuffs. Work on safety before speed. Want ya around a goodlong time!

Agree with both, brakes especially. I'll be honest when I see them going 50 through the tree'd community it scares me even with a helmet whizzing past tree's. All it takes is for one of the janky cart spindles to say goodbye and you'll do a full body plant on a tree. Save the fast stuff for the back road (ok, technically illegal, a great many townie cops will say hey, be careful and don't hit anybodies property and go about their business.) as was said we want you guys around for a while. I think in a race though honestly, the lifan will leave the drag rail for dead till maybe the end of the track where it might freight train by and thats due to weight and overall gearing and the way the Torque converter works. Nice build though, really like this one.

Clutchless shifting doesn't put any extra wear on the transmission if done properly. Chopping the throttle to unload the transmission is similar to using the clutch. Nothing is under load so there is no damage to be done. You can do clutchless downshifts as well, although they are not as fun or as useful for going fast.

I had an old Margay cart with the original McCulloch 100cc 2 stroke.. Could never get it started even w/electric starter. Swapped for a 125cc dirt bike engine. Like you said huge sprocket ratio issue. Could only use 2 gears even putting a small sprocket on the axel which was hard to keep the chain on with such a short chain.. Was fun shifting, but in reality the gear ratios were way off for a 10" diameter rear tire vs a 28" dirt bike tire. Went back to the tried and true 5HP flat head modded with very thin copper head gasket and glass sanded/thinned head, shimmed exhaust spring both valves, big 15HP carb, Offset keyways advance timing. Port it big. Had some luck carefully grinding the cam shaft base circle and lengthening the lifters to achieve higher lift. Wide open screaming. They would always eventually grenade throwing the rod thru the side of the block. Used to be a near Endless supply of Briggs 5HPs at yard sales for replacement blocks. Those were the days!

John on the forks for the ct70 use a Scotch-Brite wheel on a bench or angle grinder. it'll polish those forks really well. Use course and fine for a shine

Hand clutch would be safer. Next if you are having brake issues overheating and can't go bigger rotor then set up multiple disk and calipers on the axle. The cart we made anything above 40 the brakes overheated and the rotor was the lowest thing to the ground so no bigger without bigger tires. So since we still had 3 gears we put 3 more on. Just put them as close as we could and put them in between the frame on the live axle. Later when we went to a taller tire we adapted the rotors off of our street bike donor we got the engine and sprockets off of and it was about the same braking power. The go kart brakes are not made for the the heat that 70 plus braking puts off. Motorcycle parts can take it. For speed shifting do a momentary button to cut the spark quick then shift. It keeps your rpm range up and less time on the clutch shift.

On one of the next videos yall ought to attempt to make a gearbox for a 212 just a simple 3 gear and reverse? I feel like it wouldnt be very complicated but I just dont have the mechanical know how, though I am still trying to design and piece one together

clutch for taking off and stopping, clutchless shift! preload the gear lever then as soon as you back off the throttle it will slip into gear, no harm done as backing off the throttle unloads the gear box, ive done it on every motorbike i own!

I love the kart. I just started watching you guys for a couple of weeks now, and I'm impressed about the go karts you guys build and get them to over 70 mph. I want to build my go kart with a 1000cc engine and go all out to 170 mph. Any thoughts on that? Any feed back would be fantastic for a beginner go kart owner.

Thanks man. 170 on a go kart is very very foolish. Half that is really freakin’ quick on one of those things. Just my two cents as someone who has ridden a 900cc kart

Looks like you have a lot of drag from your front end. Get that sorted and you should see over all better performance, front right camber in particular. Also tire pressure looks pretty high, run around 14 psi cold you should see better handling at high speed.

Runs pretty good! Hopefully I'm not getting old but that things wicked loud,it distorts the audio! Speaking of alignment, somewhere around 12:00 when you had stopped because of the chain slop Check that right front tire it's scrubbing more on the inside,it's got either too much toe out or excessive negative camber,or a little of both. Minor stuff, she's rippin!!!
