Thank you a million times. I have the same year and model 2009 XLT rear door. Did exactly what you said and saw the ball out of place. Took less than 10 minutes total to fix. I've had the truck for a year and a half and never had a problem with it. We pull up to my in-laws for Thanksgiving weekend (already pumped for that, haha). It's dark and my wife says the back door won't open. I messed with it for 45 minutes in the dark, then gave up and was going to wait until Monday. Fortunately my wife works at an auto dealership so she was going to take it in Monday; but no telling how much money you saved me. I Gooled my problem Saturday night when we got home and there your video was. So sorry you had to go through the trouble of taking your panel completely apart and so thankful you took the time to video and post this. You never know what good you can do that you may think is pointless. Very grateful to you.

Got the same issue. I can’t get the ball to go into the hole. Have any tips?

David Degarmo it’s been so long ago, but try and reach down the metal rod and see if you feel a plastic “clip” slide it up the rod and into hole. I’m not sure if this is the case, but may help.

This was 7 years ago on a friends truck. It’s one of the only videos I’ve ever posted, but I’m really happy it’s helped so many people! Glad you can open your door again man!

Watch this first! Worked perfectly! Thank you! No panel removal needed. Ignore that the video is dark to start, about 30 seconds in you get everything you need for the first approach. It took me a few minutes to figure out but eventually saw where the loose wire needed to be reset to. Worked once I got it. No $$ needed. It’s so nice to have vehicle work go smooth, simple and fast for once. Thanks again! All I needed was 2 flatheads, 11mm socket, phone light and a pair of needle nose.

Yes! Thanks so much! This was the issue! I used a small zip tie to go around the handle spring and around the cable to gently hold the ball on the end of the cable up into the handle. It works.

Don't let the dark intro fool you. This worked for my 2010 suicide door also. Cable came loose. Two sets of needle nose pliers and a pry bar (just to move stuff an inch so you can see) were handy. 15 minutes. Pry off the trim at the handle (tiny screwdriver) and remove the two 10mm bolts. Pry the small plastic circles off the trim facing the front door and remove the two 6mm bolts. I had the door open in 3 minutes after I located the cable, which for the lower latch is horizontal. The ball for this cable remained stationary when I pulled the handle. Pull the cable to unlatch the door, (releasing the tension) and with the second set of needle-nose grab the ball and pull it toward you to align it in the slot. Didn't seem like it did anything, but when properly inserted into the slot, actuating the handle will make the ball at the end of the cable disappear. I shut the door cuz I wasn't sure, and yup, it worked.

Thank you for this video. My 2009 F150 rear door wouldn't open, and your video saved me from a trip to the dealer. In 10 minutes I was able to put the cable with the ball on it (the lower one) back into the handle. Thanks again. John

Mike, Thank you so much....my 2011 Ford f-150 XLT rear door would'nt open. Just like you said, I removed the panel on the handle, removed the two screws and the bottom cable was unhook. Total time was about 20 minutes....You Rock!!!!

I fixed mine thanks to you. I didnt remove the panel, just the panel the handle is on. I used a fishing leader to hook the metal ball and pull the cable along with the handle (which still had 1 ball in place) which opened the door and used the leader to lead it into the place where it fell out of in the handle. It worked. My door has finally opened after a year. Thanks.

That's great you can just pull the handle off to get the door open but that doesn't fix the problem after the cable comes off the door handle it's due to the lower latch which will need to be fixed or will just come out again

Try getting a bunch of dry lube alcohol based on the cable and work it in the cable so it pulls it in harder... And wiggle wiggle it til it pops in.. took me about 10 minutes to get it to draw back and hold tight
