2008 Porsche 911 GT2 Review - Is This 997 Really a $170k Experience?

Based on the 997 Turbo, the GT2 was by the far the fastest and most powerful 911 at the time. Let's see how it tackles some gorgeous open roads in Southern California, and explore whether perhaps the ultimate version of the 997 chassis (this side of a GT2 RS or GT3 RS 4.0) is worth the current market price of $170k.

As the proud (and lucky) owner of a 997.2 GT3 RS and a 997.1 GT2 I want to take a minute to thank you for your great video. The GT2 is much more of a sweetheart than people expect to drive, and I consider it a very well kept secret as it still trades at a relative bargain compared to its original MSRP. Although my 3RS is my favorite car due to the sound and character of it compared to the muted GT2, when it comes to the serious business of speed the GT2 is faster and easier to drive fast. It just lacks the voice and immediacy of reactions of the GT3, but remains an extremely special car. My own 997.1 GT2 was born with the same adjustable sport seats as those featured in your example here, I quickly swapped them out for the carbon buckets, and those only help to accentuate the proper GT2 experience. Thanks for your great content, and keep up the awesome work!

Thanks Steve! Curious, what chassis/setup differences exist between the GT2 and 997.2 3RS?

@@Zygrene - They actually feel pretty similar from a handling POV, but there are some differences between my two that make it harder to do direct comparisons. I have PS4S tires that are very fresh and healthy on my GT2 whereas I have older Sport Cups on my GT3 RS that require replacement if I'm going to drive the car hard. That and I have worn out PCCB rotors on my GT3 RS (bought it that way) that keep me from braking repeatedly hard. My GT2 has GiroDisc iron rotors for the time being with Pagid pads, and I'm not afraid to lean on them. Of the two, I have only tracked my GT2 in Las Vegas on a trip last year and it was eye opening what it could do on a proper road course...safe to say it's way more capable than I am. I was pushing fairly hard to keep up with a 991.1 GT3 RS and a Ferrari F360, both of which are 2 pedal cars! One day when I have my coolant lines welded on my GT3 RS (with fresh tires and brakes) I do hope to also have some track fun with it too. They are both extremely sure footed cars and the GT3 RS cranks up the emotion and immediacy just a bit more.

The problem with the GT2 is there are not a lot of cars in the market, so they don't the recognition that they deserve simply because people don't have a lot of experience with them. I'm fortunate to have a 997.1 GT2, a 997.1 GT3 and a 997.2 GT3. The GT2's are truly special cars that are hard to appreciate unless you've spent a lot of time driving them. The standard rap on them is that the power delivery is not linear, sure it's not NA linear but the boost rolls on at a very linear rate, so you don't get hair trigger boost the single turbo air cooled cars are notorious for. You just have to be in the proper gear when accelerating so you're at the proper boost threshold. Also with some computer tweaking and a freer flowing exhaust boost lag is very minimal. My car has 200 cell cats with no mufflers and not only does it sound incredible but boost comes on with minimal lag. I can be in 6th gear on the highway doing 75ish and I just need to tickle the throttle (no downshift) and I squirt around traffic like it's standing still. When you look at the speedo after passing cars, it shocks you at the MPH you're doing in such a short period of time. As I mentioned earlier these cars are truly special, more so than a GT3 or RS. The amount of engineering that went into these cars for such low volume production is amazing. It's well worth the premium over the NA GT cars.

Dude, I need to say this, I just love your videos so much. I’ve been watching car stuff daily on KZread for 5-10 years and I can honestly say yours is my favourite channel. There’s just something special about your blend of fast and skillful driving and insightful comments that resonates with me. Your channel may be smaller than the others I follow, but I respect your opinion above all the other big names. Never stop doing what you do man, you’re made for it.

Great review! I would still take the 997 GT3 in part because the NA engine is becoming quite rare. It would be great to see your review of a 997 GT3.

Fenton my friend, your giddy laughter in this vid clenches it, you need a turbo-ed car. If you enjoy hearing aggressive engine noise I recomend classic Japanese with poly motor mounts. If you like to heal toe with a peddle rather than a metal stick though, you may want to go with the Porsche. Great to see you out there looking for the ultimate car experience. ☮️

Same interior (minus the carbon bits), same feeling of quality and weight to the controls. Better engine sound. Biggest differences: GT2's power, suspension and brakes are on a completely different level. Those are the things that count.

I think the 997 interior has held up well over the years, minus the standard triangle steering wheel and dated navigation. At least it's a massive improvement over the 996.

I disagree, what hasn't aged well is the radio/nav set up. I believe that's easily remedied.
