Man, I can't thank you enough for this. After two trips to the shop to get this fixed, I finally got fed up with the hundreds of dollars I had to drop every time this clearly common problem happened. I ended up replacing my ignition switch (very easy and only $53). My car started, but since I had everything apart, I figured I would try this. I used one skinny strip of duct tape, just one layer, and my car started up even better with no hesitation! Thank you!

thank you. i did it myself following your tutorial for my 08 focus and it worked. used a 7/32 socket with a 3 inch extension to take the column apart. 😊 appreciate you!

Dude!!! Yesssss!!!! Plumbers tape didn’t work for us but used electrical tape and it worked right away!!! Acts like the starter was bad but it was just the ignition. This video is my favorite video online

That worked! Thanks for the video. I’ve had ignition switch issues for years! Usually had to press in to get it to start and fight with it, but it didn’t want to start at all recently. This did the trick, no pushing in to get it to start!

This did work great. I used electrical tape and only one time around. NO more or it wont fit properly. I also followed another vid where you do a bit of grinding inside the barrel for a permanent fix and it worked great...Thank you

Literally let out an audible "Wowwwww" when it started right up with no effort after this fix. Thank you so much! A couple of points that I found difficult to understand or see in this video I'll just put here in case anyone else has the same issues. One, the poster says to remove the "screws" at the beginning (and he's right, they are screws) but not the kind you use a screwdriver to remove. You need a 7/32 socket wrench to remove these. They are about half an inch deep in there and easily accessible with a straight socket wrench of probably any length. They are all on the bottom of the steering column. Second, when you go to actually remove the ignition switch, it is important you have the key turned to the right position or you won't be able to remove the switch. That position is, with the key inserted, just turned enough to make the radio come on. Don't turn it further than that or it won't work. That's all I had trouble with so thanks again man! Really appreciate it!

Once you get it right, you shouldn't have to push hard. These ignitions work when you just turn and let go, fix will last longer with that in mind.

Bro. I'll buy you a cup of coffee if you have venmo. Thanks. I used 3/8" socket with 3" extension on bolts. Skinny screwdriver to push ignition tab in, then MUST WRIGGLE IGNITION OUT WITH KEY. Took me forever to figure out how to get ignition out, but it's easy. Just use leverage with the key to help take it out. Used a skinny piece of duct tape, ONCE AROUND, and now it turns so perfectly. Funny enough, when I got ignition out, it there was a loose piece of electrical tape in there - so. Evady had used this fix in the past. Hopefully duct tape sticks better. THANK YOU, BROTHER

Just did mine after watching this video this morning took a couple trys on getting the right amout of tape but seems to work fine now i drove for 2 weeks now with having to wiggle my key and shit. Nice vid man

Just be mindful of the heavy hand, we tend to turn the key hard and hold it, instead turning it quick and release.

If you read down on the comment, someone used ac/heating metal duct tape. You have to trim it tight around the tip though. Good lu k.

I replaced all associated parts for this problem except the entire housing and still doesn't start. What i found is while i'm turning the key push up hard at the same time with your thumb and it starts. Which probably means replace the housing.

What can of tape is better?

I believe they would have to replace the ignition collar, maybe $600.00 to $1000.00 dealer.

Hey, I went to auto zone had my starter tested and they said it was bad, ignition and starter are different? Would like to try this but if I already know starter is bad... should be starter then?

Could still pull out the ignition and look for wear points, then you have to choose labor over money. If is was me and the ignition had wear marks and did not want to spend extra money, would reinstall starter and go with the temporary ignition repair

Black tape would be more durable, special in the hot summer months. i tried it and could not get the ignition back on, guess it depends on how wore it is, masking tape works good as well. Going to try black tape again next time.

My 2008 sometimes wont start, radio comes on and power. I don't think it's the ignition cause the remote starter doesn't start it either. Today I tried a few times won't start then kicked ice off the wheel wells and tried and it fired right up. Do you think it's the starter?

We sometime have the tenancy to push the ignition in when trying to start, should just turn slightly and let go. Should not have a large key ring with a lot of weight as well, causes damage.

Timothy I had that issue..if this tape method doesn't work....I used a dremmel tool and ground the slot inside the key casing, this allowed the key to turn a bit more forward..and thus make the connection to start it.. Worked like a charm..there are several vids on this high technology on you tube...

So I'm confused as to how you got it out?? Do you stick the screw driver I to that little hole? Is there a pin? All I see on mine is a little hole, I've stuck a screw driver down in there and it dosent come out.

Turn the ignition forward until the radio comes on, place a small enough object in the hole and press down and at the same time pulling the ignition out.

Ended up using metal tape that you see on ductwork and seems like a permanent repair after thread tape and marine tape only worked for a week or less

Sorry I was away for a while. Someone else used duct tape. This is only to get you out of a jam. If you are turning the ignition too hard, or have too may keys on you chain may cause this issue in the first place.

Trying this method would be the easiest way to go first. You could invest in a code reader, I paid $250.00 for one, but there is a cheaper one for under $150.00 @ Harbor Freight. Or if your vehicle is running you could go to Auto Zone and they would run the test for free in the anticipation of you buying parts.

Sorry, do not understand your question? You have to remove the ignition to make the temp repair.

Pop the starter relay off the other side of the steering column and just turn that over with a screwdriver
