I've had this issue with a University-owned 2008 Ford Explorer. But most days it would start after a few tries. So, we didn't worry about it. Yesterday I was stuck in the hot sun far away from my office for almost an hour. It wouldn't start! Then I found your video and tried jiggling and pushing in the key. It worked!!! Thank you so much!!

My mother-in-laws 2004 sport trac would act completely normal but would not crank or turn over. I was trouble shooting it most of the day. Saw this video and figured I would go back outside one more time and see if this would work and BINGO, It fired right up. Thank you for taking the time to make videos that help out others.

I have this issue on my 2008 Focus. As a temp fix I've been periodically using plumber's tape (the white Teflon tape that goes on pipe threads) to wrap around the end of the cylinder that makes contact with the steering column portion. This increases the "bite" and allows the cylinder to engage the starting mechanism in the steering column as it should. This fix lasts for maybe 1-2 months at a time at which point I repeat the process. You may have to play around with how many times you wrap the cylinder with the Teflon tape but you'll find the sweet spot. It's extra sweet too because it's much cheaper and less of a hassle than it is to swap keys and all that jazz. Hope this helps!

YES! FordTechMakuloco, Thank you for the great tip! This is the issue with my 2004 Expedition. I doesn't start when its below freezing. I'm guessing at those temps, the metal has contracted just enough to not touch. It's 27 degrees and I just started the Expo by doing exactly what you did in this video. This is the 3rd video of yours that has helped me greatly. Godspeed, to you.

They also help me to decide to fix it myself or get professional help when I see that it is above my capability.....not to mention that I don't sound so ignorant when I do get professional help. Excellent information. I do have one question: Which wears out first, the cylinder or the housing? Most videos show that replacing the housing fixes the problem.

Thank you so much for posting this helpful video. This just happened to my motherinlaws car and I just bought the key cylinder from the dealership for almost $160.00 got home and looked to see how to install it an saw your video, I returned the key cylinder and bought the lock housing instead, I installed it and the Escape started up again with no problem at all, it took me about three hours but I am so glad that I didn't waste $160.00 for no reason on the ignition lock cylinder when replacing the lock housing did the trick.

This also applies to the F150 2006 I literally tried everything . I change the starter, checked all the fuses . I could only turn the key forward and jumped the starter to get the truck started but still could not figure out what was not allowing it to start. After this video, I now know what’s wrong with it. Dude! You da man! 2010 F-350 Super Duty. Just quit working one day. Had it towed, one local mechanic spent hours trying to pinpoint, then the Ford house took a stab at it and couldn’t find the problem. It’s been starting since with the exception of today. Many thanks for this video. My '02 E350 Superduty motorhome wouldn't start at all. I thought I would have to replace the starter, etc or have to have it towed to diagnose. You saved me some dollars when jiggling the ignition switch worked. Now to address that issue, but at least it's narrowed down.

Have a 09 Mariner with this issue currently at the shop. The Ford Dealer across the street literally had no knowledge of this issue. In the end we ordered a 'lock cylinder housing'. The switch itself is okay can turn manually and car fires right up. Had a similiar issue on a Wrangler where the 'ignition switch actuator' broke and cause a no crank no start also. Can also send 12 volts down the blue/white wire and it should crank over. Via power probe. But super simple to pop cover off column and pull switch and manually turn. 5.5 mm socket/ratchet and flat head is all ya need!

So very helpful - thank you. I have a 2010 ford focus with the intermittent no crank/no start problem. So its a faulty/worn out ignition switch it seems from your channel. Very informative video! My question is about my friend's 1999 E-150 conversion van with the 5.4. Yesterday it died in traffic and wouldn't re-start. No crank, nothing but a clicking from the starter. He's worried that maybe something really bad happened like a broken timing chain. The van, by the way, has a remote controlled anti theft system installed. Recently he replaced the fuel pump, along with an injector. His check engine light was on and the codes given were for O-2 sensors. He cleaned and re-installed them which caused the check engine light to go out for a few days, then back on.Any ideas? Thanks!

Thank you! This is exactly the issue i have! I have a 2009 Mercury Milan which is basically the ford fusion/focus. And it has gotten so bad it takes almost an hour of wiggling and jiggling and pushing to finally get it to start. Works no problem in the cold, im guessing because the cold weather shrinks the metal which allows it to pop out easier. But after work when its hot it takes forever to find that sweet spot. Again guessing because with the warmer conditions, the metal parts have expanded more which makes it harder for that detent to pop out and engage. But now, where can i buy and replace that. Have to this weekend.

This video helped and educated me. Question: will this trick stop working soon? I find myself having to try new ways to turn my key.. Jiggle it... Slow motion turn, and they kind of work for a few days in a row. It worries me that the problem is going to get worse. Sometimes it takes minutes or seconds. Sometimes i get weird battery saver messages. It is inconsistent. If I go days without driving it, it REALLY looks like it won't start... But it eventually does. I'm not sure if I should keep on doing special key tricks, or replace it. My current plan is to replace the ignition when the key absolutely fails... But this could be anywhere at any time. So basically will this trick keep working or should I plan to replace the ignition? Thanks so much.

Have the same issue with a no crank no start on a 2014 transit connect with low miles. had a dealer installed remote start module that we thought was causing the issue... removed the module and removed the splices that had been made.. still has the same issue.. checked the start wire (blue/white) from the ignition switch all the way past the BCM and it has a good clear signal when turning to start position. the PCM is registering as 'crank' in the key position PID, fuse 13 has power (to starter relay) and the starter relay is good. I can jump pins 3&5 under the relay, and the starter will turn over fine.. but of course no start. I am unable to figure out exactly what is keeping this vehicle from starting. Everything i have checked proves to be fine.. but i just cant get it to turn over. Any suggestions?

I'm having a similar although not the same issue, with my 2009 Ford Focus... It was working fine for the last few weeks since I bought it, and the battery reads on the tester as being over 80% good, as well as everything else working when the car is running, and I have never had a problem starting it before, but yesterday and today when I went to start it, it did a couple of mini cranks I guess you might call them, and then just started clicking... It did that a couple of times, until I put a battery booster on it, after which it fired right up... Any ideas??? I'm from Minnesota by the way if that matters or helps any in the diagnosis

Alright first time ever asking , but here goes. Have a 2005 Navigator 6hp trans , has a 90 percent of the time no crank issue. No pcm grounding of starter relay. Ids shows park and neutral as ok in pcm and 4x4 pids list , also shows correct start run and acc positions. However shows open on all four contact plate switches. Since there is no dtr sensor, I wonder whether the transfer case contacts are being used as a secondary input to pcm for starting. Cannot find any decent info that pertains directly to the 6hp setup. Hoping with your experience you may have run into something like this before?

It shows key in fault but if wiggled it'll show key in like it should however nothing will work. It says it's in the start position when in the on position. The b10f1 is active. If I wait 30 minutes it'll work fine but goes this multiple times a day

So if the lock cylinder and the ignition switch go bad individually do they have the same symptoms? I had the ignition switch replaced on my 2009 Ford Focus SE back in January after that went up on my car and I noticed 3 times since last Thursday that I had to turn the key twice to start my car. I hope this time its the lock cylinder if there is a problem.

I am currently having the same issues with my 08 Ford Escape. My mechanic finally started it with so much power, but I do not have enough strength to do so. I am going to try this technique after work today. Did anything come out of this, did ford do a recall on i? This is a major problem, I was stuck for hours trying to get the car started, then had it towed to my mechanic. I have a feeling this is going to be a continuous issue.

Could this related to my 05 F150? I did change the anti-thief sensor and ignition switch sensor black plastic box connection harness wires on left side of column steering so no luck to fixed it at all so mostly time I turn to start my truck runs fine until depend any days it won’t turn on when I crank the ignition position to run, no start so it will start when I shaking the wheel steering or hitting the wheel steering that will start quick.

Have a 2000 F150 5.4 V8. Sometimes the starter won't click. Have full power.... Battery wires and terminals are clean. After turning the key 2 or 3 times the starter will engage. Is this the Starter Solenoid? Ignition Switch?

I have a question , I just recently got my steering shaft fixed due to the steering wheel being very tight ... Immediately after getting it fixed I took it for a test run , during the run I noticed my wipers stopped working , ( they worked before ) , now my truck has had the same problem in which it won't crank upon starting , it doesn't happen all the time only a few times but it is a new problem after fixing the steering shaft , I have to unplug the battery for 10 or so mins to even get it started , I called the mechanic and he said its my anti theft system thinking I'm trying to steal it , long story short I want to ask since these symptoms happened immediately after fixing the steering , could that have caused the security system to have issues?
