Just got through this issue on my 2009 grand caravan. Exact problem described in the video. This is caused by an insufficient engine ground, and I'll tell you why. The ECM has an internal relay called Double Start Override, which only allows 1 start event per key cycle. This is to prevent engaging the starter while the engine is already running. In my case, I was able to get the van to consistently start by using a scan tool to command this DSO relay on. If the proper engine ground is not in place, The current from the starter runs through the smaller ground that is also utilized by the ECM and TIPM for relay control. In the instant that the starter is beginning to turn the engine, the spike of current is enough to overwhelm the ground wire and disengage the relay for a moment. Once the relay is disengaged, the computer is unable to send another start signal during that key cycle. When you jump the relay like in the video, you are fighting through this initial spike in current, and the relays for the fuel pump, etc are able to recover and the engine starts. To test the theory, I ran both leads of my jumper cables from the engine block to the negative post of the battery. Van went from this 1 click behavior to good, strong starts every time. Found a broken ground strap from the passenger side engine mount to the frame. My plan is to run redundant engine grounds, one from a bell housing bolt to the negative post of the battery, and one from the motor mount to the frame to replace the broken ground strap there.

Here's a tip I just learned that I have done and it works. Put the key in the on position. With foot on brake put van into reverse then back to park. Try to start the vehicle and it should. Just did this this morning and it started first try. Some say turn key back to off then start but I didn't. I just turned to start and it worked. May help you get out of jam. Just did this and it worked. I had already replaced battery. Then starter. Then ordered new relays… I’m going to be replacing the neutral safety switch. Could have been the issue from the beginning.

The relay should have one hot ALL of the Time, AND The second leg is hot when The ignition switch is on then a signal is sent to the PCM AND when the key is turned to the start position a signal is sent to the PCM AND when it receives the signal the PCM grounds The relay.

2008 Limited 4.0- the same problem! - when not starting - I change gears then start no problem --- Look like something related with neutral position - I have brand new starter from mopar orginal and on recall replaced ignition switch and received two NEW keys - The problem still show up from time to time

Check the main ground cable from the battery to the transmission housing. Just fixed one that looked good but was corroded. The mount bolt holding the cable in the aluminum housing broke finally.

Had this a few years ago on my 01 T&C. I did a bunch of testing and finally ordered a new starter. When I went to take off the starter bolt that also has the ground wire going to it , I found it was loose. After tightening it the engine started right up. I swapped the ground to the other starter mounting bolt though as it was easier to get at to be able to check if I ever need to in the future. Good point.

I think this is the same problem I have. I went to eat breakfast with my mom and when I went to turn my van on it wouldn’t do anything. The lights would turn on but it wouldn’t turn on. I see that the video is a couple years old and hoping you see my comment. If so could you please respond and tell me if you were able to fix it. And what it came out to be. I would really appreciate it. 🙂

Will it run and drive like that . Have a friend bought a van but won’t turn over . So again will it go down the road like that when it stated , did you turn it of at the key or did it die after the initial start ???

Thanks for the video. I had this problem too. Anyone having this issue should try the following. Anytime you get just a click when you turn the key, move the shifter to N (neutral) and try starting it again. If it starts properly everytime in neutral after several instances, you can be sure it is the Transmission Range Sensor (aka Neutral Safety Switch) that would need to be swapped. I had mine fixed and it has started fine since. Unfortunately, the repair involves opening the transmission and is relatively expensive.

@@eulisesesquivel9925 I might suspect the ignition switch if you don't even get a click or it also doesn't start in neutral. But I also think there could have been a recall on the ignition win module.

I had same issue, tried everything..started when I jumped solenoid..I tried the neutral trick..started right up and continued to start in park...NSS ordered.

The recall is for the ignition switch - they will replace with two new key - but this is not fix this issue

I’m a mechanic, it is mind boggling situation. I had same issues with my 2003 dodge caravan, runs great across town then park, done the errands, it won’t start. Always had power at the fuse box, ( knew starter still good) hours later, it will start up just fine. Runs for while. Something is hot under the fuse box. Guys… pull the fuse box up, look at wire, plug connectors….. look for …. Corrosion connectors… clean them!! Also, replace the relay as caution. My van has 120k miles on it. Hopefully that help some of you guys out there. I replaced the ignition switch as precaution too… being 120k miles , but not necessarily.

I was going to replace all the relays since I don’t know how to check them and O’Reilly’s said they couldn’t check them but one of them can’t be ordered-it’s been discontinued !?!

SMH alternator will not cause a no start situation. It just maintains the battery.

About a month ago we had our front blower motor for the AC stop working in the Town and Country. The motor itself tested good but found out through a mechanic that the relay is built in to the TIPM and has failed. We installed an external relay to operate the blower motor in the meantime. Hopefully soon I will be ordering a rebuilt TIPM from The makers of a KZread video at: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYOXzpSjoLmyZ9I.html Please note that the only reason I am buying this rebuild TIPM is to fix the problem of the Diagnosed non-functioning internal TIPM AC blower relay and not the starting problem. This might end up fixing both problems fingers crossed 🤞. I had same issue with my 2008 t&c. My power cables all seem to have heat damage. I used a 4 Guage cable that I cut from a jumper cable and ran it directly from battery to starter. It fixed the issue. Only problem is every 6 months or so I need to make a new wire due to heat. Now all the cables seem too damaged from heat this time and my battery light is coming on with new alternator and battery. I'm replacing all the red cables from battery to fuse box and from the battery to alternate and starter. I fixed this about a year ago and is pretty reliable now. I hope this works 4 u

Solenoid disconnects as soon as the car starts.

The alternator is totally illogical as the cause. If it clicks, the starter main lead or connection is the first possibility. That's assuming the click is the starter solenoid. If the click is an interposing relay in the fuse box, it's in the solenoid circuit somewhere.. Possibly that relay failing. Or bad fuse box connections.

3 months old means nothing. and near nothing will stop the starting circuit other than a bad starter or ignition switch

This sounds like the relay or switch for the starter is not working correctly i would get that replaced

My 2001 jeep cherokee will start but dies 2 sec. Later any tips where to start looking for the problem

Kenny Lautzenheiser I’m not a mechanic but I’m wondering if your having a fuel delivery issue. For the engines to run two seconds and then die sounds like it’s runs out of fuel or get choked by too much fuel. This is only a guess because with these new vehicles you never know. There’s so many sensors on them.

What 2 holes out of the 4 from the relay did you use?

What did they do to fix it.?

AutoZone has a diagram of Starter, to battery, and three things.. key, an ignition switch, and neutral switch. As you have automatic trans, you need a neutral switch. this safe is so the car starts in neutral or park. you have a key lock at the column. you have two kinds - one chipped, one not chipped. install is different for both at the steering column. Under the column is an ignition switch that works 'off' the key... if in neutral okay to start/ if chipped, okay to start, etc. Recently had old battery need replacing. I thought that was why my 2002 T&C started the same kind of thing. (Click.. nothing... five tries later.. starts.) $315 mechanic or I diagnose it myself.. So, I'm starting at the relays, cleaning contacts. or replacing. then the key, then the ignition, possibly neutral switch. for around $150. Then, if that does no good, the Starter is $115, and a good mechanic for $100. Still cheaper than original quote for just a starter. The mechanic, reputable local at an auto center said he would diagnose and fix so it might be less than the quote.. But, I see that I can change the key easy. I can maybe replace the starter, but will likely take it to a mechanic at $100. Still, that's new key $64 and starter $220 .. more for less money than the first quote.

What a cool experimental video for a unknown nuisance issue. When you did the turn key test it was unfortunate that it didn't show what happens during the no start click. I do love your bypass switch set up. I'm going to watch it again and hopefully catch how I can repeat what you did so I can have one too. Do you think this suggests the ignition switch or possibly the relay? You bypassed both right? So the issue with mine has to be the ignition cuz we tested the relay. Ill try to recomment what my outcome is also. Thanks.

At other comments it's looking like it's the neutral safety switch and if you put your vehicle in neutral and start it it should work.

OK so after checking if it would start in neutral mine doesn't start every time in neutral but it did make me recognize that the gear shift doesn't register properly sometimes I'll put it in park and it'll still say that it's in reverse so I'm gonna have to investigate that direction for my problem. When I say my problem I mean my mom fan because I wouldn't buy another Chrysler electrical nightmare.

I have the same problem. I just watched another guy fix it, supposedly. Mr. Fix it, I believe. Sound legit!! I'm gonna try his repair on my van, tomorrow! He says it's the connector end of the positive battery cable, located under the fuse box module.

I have 2008 Limited the same problem - and recall WIN has ben done long time before this problem

Be careful about the way you speak of Certified Techs. A lot has go to do with your ability to relay your info through the service advisor, to the tech. He can only go by what is relayed to him. Mostly inadequate or incomplete info on a repair order.. Express your disgust, here if you must. But you will need guys like me, or him from time to time in the future. Good luck with your Family car. We all wish you well and hope you have success with this problem you have. Remember these guys can only move forward with second hand information , even then it is hard unless they experience it as you do , at the time it is giving problems. My decades of experience have always proved electrical problems are the worst. Again good luck.

Dc Tv I’m sorry to hear about the situation you’re in with your van. I will be replacing my TIPM ONLY because of a built-in relay that has failed to switch on my front AC blower motor. So this might also fix the other problem but it has not been diagnosed that replacing the TIPM would fix the starting problem. Once were able to purchase this part I’ll post the outcome.

By reading the comments and watching other videos I think it's the neutral safety switch and the way to check is if it starts in neutral then that's the problem I don't know about fixing it yet but at least you won't get stranded with that.

i was using a duplicated key and the van would shut off after turning it on, and after like 2 or 3 times it wouldn’t even crank anymore. so i decided to look for the original key, tried it, and worked perfectly, so i believe that’s the reason why

Vencent Bauer The problem for the A/C Blower is the TIPM. Not sure if the starting problem is because of the TIPM also. I have not been able to purchase another TIPM yet.

Lucas Juan no. We’re still using the dead man switch I installed to turn on the starter and while turning the key. But I will be replacing the TIPM soon because of a failed internal relay. This might solve the problem. 🤞
