It is pretty common for the tensioner spring to break off when removing the tensioner? I took mine off and I started on the bolt at the bottom spring park. And it shot off and broke. Did I do it wrong?

I just installed a new tensioner and I'm not able to release the tension to get the new belt on. I'm not surprised by that part because I don't have a lot of leverage or weight to put behind it, but is there a way around that? Another method of getting the belt on without having to find someone to loosen the tension for me? Thanks!
