2008 - 2014 WRX JDM Swap, here's how to do it.

I searched all throughout the interweb looking for information on JDM swapping my 2011 WRX, I wasn't very successful, which is why I made this video,
I found one article stating the things needed for the swap, it was pretty straight forward with a few differences that I try to pinpoint with this video, I hope this helps someone out, and if you know someone in need, we're located in Hillsboro, OR, send them our way!

Parts needed to swap:
Intake manifold and PCV solenoid on block
Turbo, Pipe to Exhaust manifold, and exhaust manifold
AVCS Solenoids (Intake)
Clutch
Crank Balancer
A/C bracket with pulley (if want to switch out from stretch belt)

    This is an awesome video!! I had to have a swap done this was the cheapest alternative while I rebuild the ej255. BUT I’m doing so removing the secondary air pump I get a check engine light for air pump low pressure. Anyway to delete it?

    Hey I just swapped a Ej20x and it’s idling find but I’m getting maf and tgv codes, I’m using both from old car, is there anything you can think might be the issue? They are on different wiring harnesses so I’m hesitant to think it’s wiring but I’m not sure

    you should have left the coolant fitting in the head. T it in to the furthest heater core hose and it helps cylinder 4.

    You swap over your Usdm intake manifold and everything. TGV, fuel system and such

    I got rod knock on my 2013 Impreza wrx (ej25) and I got a ej205 from a legacy gt . My question is if the turbo from my ej25 would be ok to be swapped onto the ej20 considering my engine having rod knock .

    I just swapped a ej20xinto my 2013 because of rod knock at 120k miles. The ej255 must be the most unreliable engine of all time. Literally everyone blows a rod bearing between 80-120k miles. It’s why buying a used ej255 is expensive as hell, because they don’t exist. I was quoted $7000 for an ej255 with 75k miles lol. 1,300 for the 20x

    My mechanic put in a jdm 2.0 to my 2011 wrx, he deleted codes it ran good for about an hour and then all the lights came back on check engine, traction control, and the cruise control light keeps blinking! It reads code P0018 any ideas?

    the EJ20X doesn't have SAI, so thats probably the issue.

    Great video! I have been searching all over the internet for confirmation that the swap is possible with little effort. My only issue is the wrx I bought came with no engine. I was wondering if you could email me a list break down of parts I will need in order to do this swap. what usdm parts I need to buy and switch over. Also, how come you can't use a jdm turbo? I have pics of my engine bay to give you an idea of what I have and what I will need. I know I have seen jdm engines advertised as 06+ single avcs engines for sale how come you went with the dual avcs? Thanks again for the video! Subscribed as well.

    It might be tough to do without usdm parts because from usdm you’ll need the intake manifold and all the pcv routing including the wiring harness, it may still work with Jdm harness but I used the harness off my usdm engine and didn’t try the Jdm. You CAN use Jdm turbo but downpipe mounting bolts are in different bolt locations so it’s not a straight bolt on it will require a custom downpipe or Jdm downpipe. And I went with dual because all other electrical systems were manufactured during the same time so I wouldn’t run into any technology advancement issues, 00-07 years they might have different types of sensors and I know they went from a coil pack on the intake manifold to switching to a coil for each cylinder in 08, didn’t want to run into those types of problems

    what year EJ205 did you purchase? And where did you purchase it? Ive been considering the ej20x but it has dual AVCS and the USDM engine has single AVCS

    The jdm ecu for the exhaust AVCS. If you have a 2008+ STi , it’s all plug and play

    @@Anwar-do2fq i daily the car for right now so I havent done more than a clutch job so far. When the motor finally goes or when I get a different daily I think I might just end up getting a donor 08-14 wrx and swap motor/harnesses over from that. I feel like thatd be the easiest route to take from being an na impreza and then after that if something were to arise the jdm swap would be easier. Just starting from Impreza straight to JDM swap sounds like it would take longer gathering everything needed than I would want to spend. I really see the JDM swap as a cheap replacement unless its one of the higher revving sti motors

    So after swap will the hp be the se to original?.. so I have 2014 Subaru Impreza wrx. Trying to swap to jdm ej20. Will the hp tune it back to original?

    I'm not sure the exact numbers, you'd need to dyno test it to verify, but my engine felt like it had the same horsepower as original and no problems after the swap

    They usually cut all the wires in the harness before shipment

    2011 sedan, I went through JDM San Diego for mine, gave them my year and they sent me the right one, I asked for pictures and compared and everything looked correct

    @@totalupgradeautomotive7276 Thanks for the great video bro, there really isn't much info out there for this swap, but I was wondering did you ever find out which engine you got? I contacted JDM San Diego and they told me I need the EJ20X/Y but I notice you refer to it as the EJ205, I know there both part of the EJ20 class but I just want to make sure I'm getting the right engine, I have a 14 WRX.

    C P on car-part.com JDM San Diego lists it as a EJ205 it may be the X, but I’m not 100% sure, ask for pics and send them to me tuautocare@gmail.com and I’ll let you know what I think. You can also do cash on delivery and send it back if it doesn’t look like it’ll work. The engine I got does also have dual AVCS and it drives fine with the exhaust solenoids disconnected. Make sure you switch out your intake solenoids though because they’re different!

    I did a swap on my 08 and it's misfiring, it's at a shop now and they're doing a compression. Is there any tune you'd recommend? Also the shop that installed the engine put in a single avcs and my 08 doesn't have avcs. Thanks for your help.

    I kept the coils and spark plugs that came with the jdm motor, I'd check those to start since it has four coils and spark plugs, I also cranked it over for about 2 minutes before actually trying to start to allow oil flow, any codes?

    Update: compression test came back and all 4 cylinders were close to each other. Plugs smelled like fuel so I'm getting the coil packs and connectors replaced. They did recommend getting a tune since it's a 2.0 engine. Have you tuned yours yet and if so what tuner did you go with? Thanks for your help.

    Travis Davis I have not had mine tuned, my gas mileage has been the same as previous USDM engine and no codes or running issues so far, you can definitely do a tune just to get that extra peace of mind but I have a shop here in Oregon so I can work on it if any issues come up, so far I’ve put about 1500 miles on it with no issues

    Got the car started today… swapped mostly everything except for the Avcs solenoid, turbo and exhaust manifolds.. but after driving it.. CEL turned on and P0171 and misfire 301, 303 and 304.. cleared code and started it again. Starts right up… left the car and went home. I just remembered that I left gas cap loose when I took the engine out. I made sure that all hoses has no cracks. Inlet tube was replaced coz old one has cracks.. car is running lean and with misfires? Not sure where I made a mistake? I used the turbo and solinoid from the JDM motor..

    I had the same issue, it was a vacuum issue. I also swapped the usdm turbo though.

    Yes but it will sluggish till 4K since the exhaust AVCS is going to be retarded and won’t adjust so it’ll make spool up much slower

    Yes, jdm ej205 have a compression rate of 9.1:1 while the Usdm ej255 is 8.2:1 or 8.1:1

    No, its not pretty much it. This video misses all the important issues such as differences in cams, sensors especially crank Cam, etc. No mention of ECU requirement. etc. No mention as to why the dual AVCS are not used.
