(2007) Marriland vs. Untouchable

Ойындар

One of the most watched Pokemon battles of all time (5m+ views), now back on KZread in even more glory than before. Keeping the original soundtrack that's been ingrained in everyone's minds, now you can rewatch the epic fight from 2007 featuring Marriland versus the challenger Untouchable.
This was actually the first competitive battle I did in Diamond and Pearl, only a month or two after its release (so sometime in May 2007, if I recall correctly). My Blissey, Skarmory, Gengar, and Salamence were migrated from my Emerald version, which I did a few local competitive battles with. The other two were bred and raised on my Japanese Diamond version, which was farther along than my Pearl version. The metagame had hardly been established back then (Garchomp wasn't even uber yet), and I was still relatively new to the whole things going on, so clearly I'm sure there were a few mistakes here and there.
FAQ===========
Q: I want to battle you, Marriland!!
A: Don't ask. Asking or doing anything annoying like make a topic isn't going to make me want to battle you. It's just going to make me sigh. If I want to battle, I'll ask you, not the other way around.
Q: How did that LV1 Rattata take out that Empoleon?!?
A: It used a Focus Sash to have 1 HP remaining after Brine hit it, then used Endeavor which essentially does damage to the foe so it has the same HP as Rattata (setting Empoleon's HP to 1), and then it used Quick Attack to strike first, since it's guaranteed to do 1 damage.
Q: How did you get those moves on a LV1 Rattata?!
A: I caught two high-level Raticates on that northeast island place, made sure they BOTH knew the moves I wanted "FEAR" to know, and then bred them so they passed the moves down, since if both parents know a move the offspring can learn, it'll pass it down.
Q: What does F.E.A.R. stand for?
A: "Flippin'" Evil Annoying Rodent. Flippin' is the family-friendly version, let's just say. But it can also mean [F]ocus Sash + [E]ndeavor + Quick [A]ttack + [R]attata.
Q: Where did you come up with that idea?
A: I saw someone talking about it on the GameFAQs Diamond/Pearl message board back in 2007. It sounded kinda neat, I figured some random opponent that was likely to have an Arceus would be able to figure out how to outsmart it, and that it could be a trump card. I take no credit for coming up with the idea; I just helped make it known.

The whole reason this battle was fought, if I remember right, was that Untouchable was an arrogant jerk (hence the name; he acted like he was an unbeatable battle genius, when he was really someone who would use Earthquake on a Salamence) and Marriland took the challenge because why not; he utterly steamrolled him. Yes, you can say that FEAR is cheap, yes, you can say that Garchomp and Salamence would eventually be banned, but the fact is that Marriland didn't win because of that. He won because he had even a BASIC understanding of competitive battling up against someone who EQ'd a Salamence and thought Rampardos and Empoleon were good choices to go with his 2/3 of an Ubers team. Marriland won not because of brilliance (he's good at a lot of stuff, and is a competent competitive battler, but it's far from his best skill) but because he had even the most basic understanding of Pokémon, something his opponent demonstrated a lack of from turn 1. (And, in an early Gen III or Gen V competitive battle, there's an excuse for using a no-effect EQ, namely not memorizing what has Levitate and not knowing about the Air Balloon respectively. Gen IV, on a Pokémon that is Flying-type? Not so much.)

I always felt that the elites on Smogon would just laugh at this video because of how "bad" the plays and sets were (it was one of my first battles, though, so I mean really), BUT I also strongly believe that what you said is true: it helped _inspire_ people to learn about competitive battling and learn stuff from Smogon, and sometimes it's the inspiration of seeing something cool that gets you into things, so I'm glad that I was hopefully able to inspire people to get into competitive from this fight!

@@marriland I also want to go on record to say that I also started competing because of this video, and the reason that my Pokemon battle videos are formatted the way they are is BECAUSE of this exact video. Prior to watching this, I never truly understood competitive matches; I thought it was as simple as "get your Pokemon to Level 100" and "teach your Pokemon the strongest moves" and "use the most powerful ones!" I never understood the more tactical strategies of using Stealth Rock or Substitute. And we definitely can't forget that amazing finishing strategy with that Rattata. You took down a guy that used Legendaries with sheer strategy and planning, and that deserves A LOT of respect. As such, I also took inspiration from this upload, and I tend to come back and watch it every now and again because other players will still bring it up from time to time. And while I may not be the most well-known or highest-ranking Pokemon players out there, it was thanks to this video that I even tried to compete and strategize at all. So, all in all, thank you very much, Marriland! This video's legacy will continue to live on, I'm sure! =)

@@Yoshiller To be completely honest, addressing your second paragraph - it's clear that Untouchable's EVs and IVs were all over the place. It wouldn't surprise me if he just spammed rare candies on all his pokes to get them to 100. So most competitive teams would be able to tear him a new one with that set up - hell, one solid sweeper or a baton pass strat which was legal at the time would lead to a 6-0 sweep. With that being said, however, I completely agree with the rest of what you said. I think we were all on Untoucheable's level of pokebattling at some point, and I'm sure that this video opened the eyes of many to the various dimensions and complexities of competitive battling. So cheers Marriland, and I'll never forget this legendary video!

I remember being in elementary school, watching this and the old Diamond Let's Play, and wanting to be just like you someday- a full grown adult who plays pokemon for a living. Sadly, that didn't pan out. I'm a boring adult with a real job now. But you made my childhood, Devin. Thanks so much.

This is one of the most important Pokémon videos ever made on KZread. It may not be the first of its kind as many people recorded battles and put them here, but this was the one that really showed that Offense and Defense are good, but a smart strategy can win you a tough battle.

HectorNintendoCraft What context? He used EQ on a Salamence turn 1, and does nothing throughout the rest of the battle to convince me that he actually was predicting a switch to Heatran or something. He used unreleased (and insta-Uber) Pokémon, abused one of the most consistently broken moves in Pokémon in Dark Void, and still lost. And he had a Sky Attack Ho-Oh. A. SKY. ATTACK. HO-OH. There is no "context" that can justify that.

The BGM just makes the video too epic and I remember back in the old days when I watched this I was just mindblowned by the strategy and I was so fucking hyped. I'm watching it again and it's not such a great battle because Untouchable is really noob. But even though, I got the chills in my spine for the vid. Even though it's really not that great of a battle for today's standards, when this was originally uploaded in 2007, there were hardly any videos of battles online. This was the first glimpse of competitive battling that a lot of people saw and got them interested in it, especially due to the Rattata strategy (this is one of the earliest uses of it - I didn't come up with it, though). That's why it's pretty iconic - the original video had several million views on it before the false DMCA attack saga on KZread in 2012 forced me to remove all of my videos.
