2007 Honda Pilot Power Steering Noise

The Pilot developed a strange noise coming from the power steering pump. In this video I discuss the 2 most common causes of this issue, known to plague older Hondas and Accuras.

    This worked perfectly for my '06 Pilot. Thanks for making it. Tip for anyone doing it- I purchased a new reservoir and drained it with a "quart fluid pump" so there was barely any oil left under the reservoir screen...seemed to make much less of a mess. Then, I put the new reservoir on and flushed it three times with steering fluid- you should have seen all the dirt coming out each time. Using the fluid pump made it a breeze to drain the reservoir. Whole job took less than an hour

    Thanks this saved me money. Noise gone instantly in 08 Pilot with only the bottom ring replaced. Used a little 10mm wrench from a short Mastercraft set. With lots of finger work. Don't drop the bolt in the engine like I did. Stuff your rag way in there against the engine so u don't need a magnet stick to fish it out. Thanks again.

    When you purge the air out you have to leave the reservoir cap off so that the foaming fluid can release the air. Usually it takes 10 turns to the right and 10 turns the left lock to lock. And yes new fluid does help.

    the key is to embrace holding the stubby 10mm wrench with left hand while the right hand merely holds, mind you awkwardly, the box wrench head on the bolt itself- with full contact.

    Thanks for the vid. I wanted to just clean out my reservoir too instead of paying 50 bucks for a new one at the dealership. Was it easy to clean out? Will just spraying brake cleaner in there melt the shit off the screen without melting the screen? You think I would need a air compressor too to blow it out?

    If you can't get that little nut on/off, removing the pump isn't too bad. Also check the pressure hose o-ring on top (has 2x 10mm hex bolts on top of pump). If > 200k miles, take a look at the rubber hose portions of the pressure line on top, as the rubber will get checked/cracked over time and will develop a leak. If you're replacing the pressure line, you'll only need a 10mm socket and a 14mm crows foot flare socket. The flare nut is a to get to, but it's not too bad. It's not difficult, but tedious. You can replace the pump, pressure hose and reservoir for $130 on Amazon. That reservoir has a filter integrated into the bottom of it.

    Lot's of great info. In my case the orings were all I needed at the time. We ended up trading this car in towards a new CRV after we found out the rear suspension mounts on the body had rotted off, and would have been a lot to repair.

    @@stevewatr Our 2007 Pilot EX-L is still running strong at 230k except for this P/S line. I've only replaced the radiator and alternator previously. Otherwise it's been a great SUV. Hardly any rust on this thing either, and we're in NW Ohio with salty / brine-laden winters. Garage-kept. Rubber control arm and suspension bushings look like they've got another winter left but that's it.

    ATG said to beware dishonest dealers & shops will say Engine Valve Job or Power Steering Pump needed. Which is close in $1,000.00+ jobs. ATG suggests to buy Harbor Freight Tools and buy O-rings multi accessories (in plastic container). Then jack front wheels off the ground. Keyed on but no need to start the engine. Turn Steering Wheel left to right (end to end) and check for bubble. Make sure to check that Power Steering Fluid is not low. You may have to turn more than 51 times.

    i bought a 2003 accord 3.0 v6 and it had the loud noise on the power steering. the reservoir bubbles up, leaking fluid on the bottom. checked for recalls and they replaced free the high-pressure steering hose and an ignition key component. after replacing the new high pressure hose it still has the same noise and bubble in the reservoir. i figure i need to replace the new red o-ring . so i bought it for $3, a new reservoir with the two hose that connects it. gave it to my mechanic friend and after that, no more noise and leaking.

  • @stevewatr

    @stevewatr

    5 жыл бұрын

    It might be. My understanding is the bad o-rings allow air to be sucked into the system. This causes cavitation in the pump. When it's cold, the orings may be leaking more air, then as they warm up, they expand and seal better. Just a theory.

    Replacing the O-rings and/or reservoir doesn't make the noise instantly go away. As others in the comments have said, you need to turn the wheel multiple times and drive the vehicle to expel the air bubbles still in there from the prior PS fluid, once that is achieved the sound (usually) goes away.@@Afghan-Pride-Till-I-Die
