    I have just experienced this over the past few months and after looking into it, I have decided to buy some kerosene, drain the oil, and then fill the pan with kerosene using the dipstick tube (i.e. did not pour kerosene into the engine but directly into the oil pan through the said tube). I left the kerosene in the pan for a bit, drained it and repeated the operation. Left it there again for a bit, drained, changed the filter and refilled with oil and now the gauge is back to normal (i.e. 275 kPa/40 psi at idle and normal operating temperature.In my case, it appears that the bottom of the pan was really dirty, and the pickup screen was sucking in all the gunk in there, causing the loss of pressure and flooding the bottom of the pan and the screen on the pickup tube in kerosene cleaned up the gunk and restored flow.Hope this may work for someone else; it's a first easy step anyone can try with no risk, and it may just work before trying to diagnose further for other causes.

    I have an 07 Suburban 5.3. I was able to replace the oil pressure sensor and filter from up top. Just have to take the top guard off, move some hoses out of the way and reach back there with the right socket to get the sensor out. Used a pick to pull the little filter out and replace that. Took about an hour. Don't have to take the intake off. There are videos on line that were helpful. The issue was the oil pressure went up to about 80 lbs on my dash gauge. Problem fixed. However I split the little vacuum hose on the back and didn’t see it when took it off the valve cover. It set lean codes for left and right banks along with turning off my anti skid and setting a chassis code. Took me some time and research and a smoke test of the vacuum system to figure it out. Part was free at O’Reilly’s, it was the last six inches of 3/8th ID hose they had, so they gave it to me. I cut off two inches and that took care of all the codes. My advice on the anti skid chassis code is fix all the other codes first.

    Had 2007 Yukon, gauges showed low oil pressure, and then would go to zero oil pressure. Took to three mechanics and no one could figure, and recommended that I change oil pump. However, with engine running, zero oil pressure on gauges, I hooked test meter and computer showed that I had oil pressure. Long story short. Almost spent a lot of money to have oil pump changed, but something said - I got oil pressure. Pump produces pressure. That is not the problem. Carried to another shop, and they kept car about one hour and called and said problem has solved. The lube shop on last oil change put on the wrong oil filter. Replaced filter, and works like a new car.

    All that is needed is a 27mm socket, a swivel and a 3" extension to remove the oil pressure switch itself. A small angled pick works perfect to pull it out. Just be careful to not tear up the screen upon removal, unless you are changing it out anyway. Most new oil pressure switches will come with a new screen as well.

    I have a 2007 suburban, soon after I got it I got the stopengine/reduced engine power. wouldent go more than 5 mph before stalling out, was hard to get started agin. used dealer came and got it, thank god it was before 30 day warranty was over. first thing they did was changed the oil sending unit, got it back, 2 or 3 days latter happens agin, they come and got it agin, speny forever playing with it trying to figure it out, sent to a gm dealer, after a week they replaced thottlebody, ran good for about a week or so, same happens agin. they came and got it agin and agin was stumped, I happen to find one of the few vids on here that talk about the screen filter that is in the intake under the sending unit, called them and mentioned it, was told oh they already checked that, (yea sure they did) he calls me next day when I'm getting off work and says its fixed, guess what it was, the filter in the intake, what happejns is when it gets clogged it makes it think the sending unit is bad, truth is that when that happens the pressure is not getting to it which can make it go bad as well, but if you have replaced sending unit and are still having the same issue, the stupid little retarded screen filter would be the next thing I would do. oh yea, one of the sympoms also was that even after replacing the sending unit, it was still reading very low pressure which as it ran slowly went down to nothing, and then the stop engine/reduced engine power would happen. hope this info helps somone:)

    Mine just came on, same year etc. I had just replaced this sensor last year. My oil actually got low (apparently have an oil cooler line leak) and I think it stirred up some carbon.... Hoping the fresh oil will help clear it out. I don;t want to listen to the ding ding ding ding the whole time driving and I REALLY don't want to go through that mess again trying to get behind the intake.

    THANK YOU for creating this video!!!! Changing the oil was all I had to do. I was driving my 2007 Tahoe with 230,000 miles yesterday and my oil pressure dropped to zero out of nowhere. I thought it was a blown gasket or some other really bad problem. I simply changed my oil at a Valvoline center and the pressure normalized immediately. WORD OF CAUTION TO ANYONE ELSE WITH THIS ISSUE WITH AN OLDER VEHICLE - I called my reliable mechanic about this issue and strongly recommended AGAINST trying to resolve this issue with a motor oil engine cleaning additive. He said in older engines, the cleaner can shake loose a bunch of carbon and grime within the engine that will not come out by simply draining the oil and that cause other problems in the engine. The guy at the Valvoline station said the same thing.

    @columbiariversalmonenhance4050

    Respectfully, I disagree. The root cause is the oil filter causing reduced oil flow, low oil pressure and this leads to sludge buildup in very tiny oil ports feeding your camshafts, rocker arms and more. You saw your PSI return not because you changed the oil... but because you changed the filter!!! Problem is, you haven't yet treated the newly formed sludge build up that can clog your oil pressure sensor and oil pick up screens. I like a combo of SeaFoam and Motor Flush. (distinctly different than an Oil additive like Lucas) This uses organic solvents to dissolve any and all sludge and varnish build up throughout the lubrication system and restore your oil pumps efficiency. These solvents don't "shake" anything loose. Crunchy solid carbon deposits only exist inside the combustion chamber where there is no oil. Oil is a liquid, remember. Using motor flush is like putting alkaseltzer in water... it dissolves.. eventually completely. Carbon isn't an issue here because carbon would be on the combustion side of your piston, out of the oil lubrication ports... the only reason you have oil there is if your piston rings are shot and you have oil blow by, which means your engine needs to be replaced anyway and this whole discussion becomes a mute point. So yes... do use a Motor Flush type of solution to fix the sludge issues or they will compound over time and lead to critical failures like timing chains failing = guaranteed motor replacement. Just follow the OEM directions... its not hard. Its $5 to keep your motor clean, reduce heat, reduce wear, and prevent oil passages from clogging = critical engine failure in all cases.

    @@columbiariversalmonenhance4050 Respectfully, I disagree. Based on the research I did about that filter screen on the sensor, all the symptoms matched up to that filter being clogged, causing the sensor to not read properly and giving warnings to shut the engine off, etc, but nothing was actually wrong. If the filter was causing low oil flow and virtually no pressure as it was reading, I wouldn't have been able to drive it without issues. There was actually nothing wrong, just a sensor that couldn't read the pressure correctly. Tons of people have experienced this issue with the filter on the sensor.

  • @columbiariversalmonenhance4050

    @@troyy0206 I don't doubt there may be more than one root cause here, as you are pointing out another. But I don't see how simply doing an oil change would fix the pressure sensor issue you are describing. And there a lot of folks who are reporting, here and on other videos, a simple oil change is resolving the issue for them. I'm not saying don't replace your pressure sending unit, or it's screen... but I see no reason why it should be the first step. It's a pain in the azz to get to on the back of the engine. Just my 2 cents.

  • @troyy0206

    @troyy0206

    Жыл бұрын

    @@columbiariversalmonenhance4050 There usually are multiple causes for any symptom, but in this case I had searched and searched, then studied the issue once I learned many people were having the same issue. The reason I feel so strongly about it being my cause was that the symptom was oil pressure dropped to nothing but the vehicle ran fine, no leaks, etc, I drove it several miles while it was telling me no oil pressure and to shut off the engine. With high miles I had been running 10W-40 in it for several years to reduce the valve rattle. My theory was the thinner oil would push the grime out. If that hadn't done it, my next step was to do the old gear-head trick of mixing in ATF with the oil to flush it out. After starting it post-oil change it still said low oil pressure and after a few seconds it suddenly popped up and was fine after that. The other reason is that many people replace that filter to solve their issue without doing anything else and they had the same symptoms that my Tahoe had. It seems to be pretty prevalent with the 5.3L's of a certain time frame across the GM lineup. In the end, it had over 305k on it when I traded it in and the only major work I had done to it was replacing the timing chain at 248k.

    The oil sending unit sensor is very easy to change. No need in removing anything but the sensor with the right tools. It is hard however to clean the screen as it is part of the VLOM (valve lifter oil manifold), the part that controls when the engine goes into V4 or V8 mode.

    10w30 seems to work good with high mileage 5.3s. The clearances in the engine changes over time and you need to bump weights up after your vehicle is considered s high mileage vehicle. Also Lucas high mileage oil stabilizer helps with raising oil pressure

    When you change your oil use a quart of oil flush. Run for a few minutes until warm then change. It will clean any sludge or varnish build up. If you change your oil every 5k miles you shouldn't have any issues. I have a 2004 Yukon XL 5.3 with over 200k keep it clean as a whistle and use high mileage synthetic 5w 30 oil. It should run forever.

    Troy Huntley, there is a service bulletin posted in NHTSA involving these years/makes/models: 2007-2011 Cadillac Escalade Models 2007-2011 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe 2010-2011 Chevrolet Camaro 2007-2011 GMC Sierra 1500, Sierra Denali, Yukon Models 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 GT Built Prior to February 1, 2011 (Updated Valve Cover) and October 2010 (AFM Shield) Equipped with Any of the Following Engines: - Aluminum Block V8 Engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) (RPOs L94, LZ1, L99, LC9, LH6, L76, LFA, L92) - Iron Block V8 Engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) (RPOs LMG, LY5) - Hybrid Engine (RPO LFA - Only Applies to Hybrid Models Built July 7, 2009 - February 1, 2011 - Prior Builds Not Cast For AFM Valve) These models, with AFM systems, are notorious oil consumers due to bad engineering involving the AFM system. Replacing the valve cover with the updated cover, and installing a deflector shield on the AFM Valve inside the crank case will, in most cases, will eliminate the oil consumption problem. The cover is a simple fix, but you have to drop the oil pan to install the deflector shield. While the pan is dropped, the o-ring/oil pump gasket on the end of the pickup tube should be replaced. I’d also recommend giving the oil pan, and screen/tube of the pickup tube a good cleaning.

  • @troyy0206

    Ethan Latson Nope, the issue description is the oil pressure is low and after running for 10-15 minutes it drops to zero but there are no signs of trouble, otherwise. No knocking, sputtering or anything else. That filter gets stopped up and I got lucky with thinner oil unclogging it. If this had not done it, I was going to try the old gearhead trick of putting a quart of ATF in and let it clean it. I've put about 20k mlies since this happened, oil pump is fine. The reason I'm confident it was that filter on the sensor and not the oil filter is that it ran for about 30 seconds with the lower pressure reading then suddenly jumped to normal.

  • @TroyTube

    @TroyTube

    4 жыл бұрын

    If it stalls when the pressure goes down it might actually be a bad oil pump. Mine would drop on the gauge but no other issues, the filter on the sensor was just not allowing the sensor to read the pressure properly due to it being clogged.

  • @RealSteelStreet

    @RealSteelStreet

    4 жыл бұрын

    When these engines lose oil pressure the computer goes into what's called "limp mode" which drastically reduces power and can even cause stalls. Will actually shut the fuel pump off completely once it reads ZERO oil pressure. Definitely get your oil pressure issue resolved first (sensor, screen, pick-up tube, oil and filter, etc.) and then see if there are any other issues or if that clears it ALL up! 👍🏼

    I don't think this was it because it only showed there was no oil pressure but it was actually fine and was running fine. Based on the research I did about that filter screen on the sensor, all the symptoms matched up to that filter being clogged, causing the sensor to not read properly and giving warnings to shut the engine off, etc, but nothing was actually wrong.

    @troyy0206 We have a 13 and my wife called on interstate saying everything was going off to shut engine down. She said the oil pressure was almost 0. I drove out there and found no leaks. Oil level was fine. I told her to start it and it went up to 20. She continued to the next town and while at an idle while we switched vehicles it was around 15, 18. I drove it home at 20 and pulled it in the garage. I dropped the oil and changed the filter and it popped back up to 42 cold. After running and warmed up it idles at about 28 or so. I questioned if this is almost too low at idle, but it seems they are all over the board. Running down the road (which they claim is irrelevant) its says about 36 @ 55mph.
