2007 - 2014 GM SUVs Fluid & Filter Service ~ 6L80 / 6L90 Transmission & MP 3023 / 3024 Transfer Case

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this regularly scheduled maintenance video we will go over what is required at _every_ 97,500 miles for the automatic transmission and transfer case per GM factory recommended service. Both how to drain and replace the MP 3023 / MP 3024 (both RPO NQH) transfer case fluid, as well as how to open the fluid pan of the 6L80 (RPO MYC) or 6L90 (RPO MYD) automatic transmission to drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and replace the transmission fluid filter (and optionally the transmission pan gasket and/or filter bushing) given the exhaust crossover pipe obstruction on these models. We go over all of the service manual details including fastener torque values, fluid checks, and genuine GM part numbers. However, in his video we will *NOT* be removing the catalytic converter exhaust assembly, *nor* will we pry/lever/jack/ratchet strap this exhaust assembly (which can introduce additional stress on the corroded exhaust manifold bolts and/or exhaust flex pipe). We will not remove the exhaust crossover from the exhaust manifold either, Instead we will work with the obstruction.
The truck illustrated is a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche LT Z71 Black Diamond Edition with 4WD and the 6L80, but the part numbers, procedure and tools shown in this video would be applicable for any GMT900 style 2007 thru 2014 4WD GM SUV including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, or GMC Yukon XL that have one of these same automatic transmission or transfer case models. This procedure will be _similar_ for pickup models of the same model year range with the same transmission and/or transfer case models.

Actually theres another video on you tube where the guy shows that pan coming out. I believe he twisted it to angle a certain way side ways.

Yeah I went over that technique where you might get lucky, but only on later model years / body styles. Not happening on the generation this Avalanche is within.

It’s beyond me why they don’t put an oil plug on the factory pan. I always change them out if that’s the case

Some folks presume it's just a cost decision. And while cost is always a factor with GM, the more likely driver is because the engineers who invented the system did not want techs just replacing the ATF alone. The design calls for the filter to *also* be replaced every time at the same interval. The filter seal, or bushing, should also be inspected and is a _candidate_ for replacement as well if needed. Checking and cleaning the magnet is also called for. So forcing the pan removal just to drain the ATF helps drive _full service_ behavior. The _problem_ with this particular truck application, is the exhaust system obstructs performing this full service anyway. Making a routine maintenance job become significantly more labor and parts expensive, especially after a decade or more of corrosion on the exhaust system fasteners.

Does the manual state, shut the vehicle off to then check the fluid level?

I believe I showed this pages from the manual about this, 18-476 and 18-477. The engine does _not_ need to be running to perform the ATF hot check. You can leave it running, but not so long as to exceed the temperature range. You can leave it off, but not so long as to fall below the temperature range. The temperature range is what matters, the engine running is just a means to reach it. So use the engine to reach, and maintain, the temperature range. That's it. Hope that helps.
