    Late to this review but thanks. I bought a 2006 S for 12k and had 91k miles on it. I put 6k into it for new tyres, electrical issues and an updated stereo. This car has never given me one problem. It's basically like driving a 911 but with more finesse and fun. Best investment I ever made.

    Well done! I have a 2007 Cayman S with 278,000 miles on the clock... It is a very reliable and verrry fast machine especially having spent about $4K to go from 295HP to about 365HP with a GT3 Intake Plenum, Fabspeed Race Headers, Flashed chip as well as a beautiful machined aluminum short throw shifter... 0-60 in 4.0 seconds or less... Still gets about 23-25mpg hwy. Very reliable... 100% synthetic every 6 weeks or so with new oil filter. Common repairs Fuel oil separator at about 100,000 miles... Shift linkage replacement... Best car ever... Upgrades as noted... Faster than many 911's per my friends at Porsche of Tampa. If you get one Drive it as Professor Porsche exhorted us to do... John Russell, Dade City, Fl. "No Substitutes!"

    Sorry, but youre not making 365 hp from those mods, or have a 0-60 that fast. Max you're gonna gain from FULL bolt ons (pulley, intake, plenum, exhaust, headers, reflash, etc) will be 30-40hp, and thats after 6-8K USD in parts. Since you have a manual, your 0-60 is probably mid-high 4's and you're making MAYBE 325bhp. Look anywhere on Planet 9, Rennlist, etc. for dyno graphs of bolt on setups and you'll be surprisingly disappointing. If you want to make power on the 3.4L you gotta go forced induction...

    I am getting a Cayman S for my 50th in 4 years, and I have scoured the Internet for years researching and lusting after this car. This is by far the most comprehensive, most objective, and just fun review of this car yet. I love how you showed all the compartments and features. In all the videos I've watched, none of them mentioned the air pump and fix-a-flat "goo". I especially loved how you mention the best feature of this car...the rear fender "hips" that make the Cayman, especially the Gen 1, very unique and beautiful.

    How can you wait that long! Get one now while the getting is good 😊 I love my 987.1 2.7L.. I recommend getting the base to avoid the bore scoring issues of the 3.4. Unless you are able ti step up to the 987.2

    Hope you get one soon I have had my 2007 Cayman S for 20mths now and I love it, its done 114k now and it's an original engine with very little bore score so as my Porsche mechanic said "it's good for 200k, don't worry about it, just go and have fun" The S is well worth the extra money over a basic Cayman, though any Cayman is awesome but the extra 50bhp and torque makes a big difference 👍 By the way the handling is incredible

    I have a 2007 Cayman S and your film shows everything good about the cayman but what it does not show is just what an amazing car it is also when you Really use it, red line through the gears and really push it through the corners and it still is totally on your side and working with you, a truly exceptional sports car 👍

    Great review. Not so "race" oriented as some. However I must add as someone else mentioned. The rear spoiler can be operated manually to come up at any speed. It can even be left up. So its not always indicative to how fast you have been driving. :)I leave mine up often.

    Got my 07 Cayman S manual earlier this year. Porsche approved used car. 44,000k's on the clock. All books, history, and accessories in place. They had the headlining redone as it was drooping. On collection they were most apologetic that the head unit wasn't responding and said "Dont worry Sir. We've ordered a new one in for you and will install it on arrival", which they did. 11 year old car. Cheapest car they had in stock. And the car looks and feels brand new, and I was treated as if I were spending $150K+ on a brand new car. If you're in the market, I HIGHLY recommend getting a Porsche approved one, from a Porsche dealer.

    Awesome review. I'd love to pick one of these up some day soon. One great thing about Porsche's is the styling really doesn't change that much from year to year -- so you can drive a decade-old Porsche and people will still ask you if it's brand new. People constantly ask me if my 2007 BMW 335i is brand new. Now obviously a car enthusiast will know the difference, but most people won't. :D

    I bought a 2016 cayman gts, the car drivers amazingly and sounds awsome. My gts has more power that a cayman s and a smooth stick shift (no flappy paddles). The porsche people where great and gave me no problems, offered me a test drive, and gave me great customer service and they send me stuff (small gifts) all the time. Unlike the Chevrolet people, who wouldn't let me test drive a used corvette stingray, i was going to get a z06, but after the bad service i gave my money to porsche. I guess i didn't look the z06 part, the guy told me it was to expensive for me to test drive. So i bought a more expensive car and brought it to the dealership (Chevrolet) while i talked to the manager about the bad service. It's been awsome everyone loves the car and it takes curves like no other. I ran down a c6 zo6 vett in a high speed corner, he was stomped, i could have passed him but i just smiled at him while on his butt. once you drive it you will love it. I took it over a 911 carrera s, that's how well it performed. Terrific review, keep up the good work.

    Small correction (well in the Australian market anyway). The PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust) is what gives you the flaps button. That's what I have. The Sports Chrono package gives you the extras like PASM, and the stop watch. It may possibly "include" the PSE in the "package". Not sure. but PSE is most certainly a separate option. (a $10K AUD option at that).

    I'm watching this video because I'm about to purchase a 1 owner used 2006 Porsche Cayman S with a clean title for only 17.5k. The only thing it needs is a little replacement or repair headliner, and it has about 70k miles. Best of all, comes with all of the luxery's as well. Full leather tan interior with alcantara, aftermarket navigation, 19 inch Perilli tires witrh stock Porsche rims, red calipers and ceramic rotors. I don't feel like I could've gotten a better deal, especially being a well built mid engine sports vehicle. This video reinforces my decision of buying it.

    For all of us concerned about the Porsche IMS Bearing issue - I found a very informative article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. The article also lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. To read the article just type in “Autohaus Hamilton IMS” into google. The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: - All 986 Boxster models. - 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) - 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745

    Harambe I sold it in February this year due to job change. I had it for 14 months and it was great! Just a pleasure to drive, especially on early Sunday mornings in Wales with no traffic! However, when I sold it I'm pretty sure the IMS bearing was on its way out and it had developed an intermittent electrical problem which killed the engine power. It would have been expensive had I kept it.

    +limolee007 There is a special Porsche /Mobile Oil branded storage bag with velcro strips that fits a 1 L oil bottle, you can stick it anywhere against the carpets in the trunk and it comes with disposable funnels. You can find them on Ebay or get them from Porsche directly. It is a cool little accessory, together with a 5 L Porsche branded gas canister ...

    I wouldn't worry too much about the sound-system of the radio. The only sound-system that matters on this vehicle is the exhaust. OK, if you're driving your Cayman as a daily, it might be somewhat different. I'm pulling mine only out for fun on winding back-roads. And so I hardly ever turn on the radio at all...

    Completely avoidable: Originally around 10% of cars failed which is a high percentage. Around 8% were replaced under recall Of the remainder a high number will have been replaced by worried owners Buy smart, don’t buy one with very low mileage because its seals & gaskets will be way past their useful life and parts will fail. Don’t buy one without a receipt for IMS work, you should buy one with as many receipts as possible, all the work that has been done is less work for you to pay for, parts are reasonable but layout brings higher labour costs.

    +Chad Steinmetz It'a really no different than driving any other 6-speed. Reverse is left and up which may be a little different. It's a very smooth tranny. Don't worry about power shifting when you're adjusting to it. Once you get the hang of it, you can work on different launch strategies, smooth downshifting and o rev-matching, etc. The key is clean launches from a stop. Beyond that, I don't know any how-to movies for shifting an older Cayman (which is what I have). There may be for other vehicles though.

    I have my car serviced at a major Porsche dealer in S Ohio. Usually takes 2 weeks to get an appt so the volume of cars they see across all the models is large. My Cayman S is an '06 and has 29k miles on it as of 7/18. As we all do, asked about how many IMS issues they have seen. Their answer was in 15 years they have seen 3 which were all early Boxsters.

    That is nice to hear Larry. Aside from the very rare IMS issues on Cayman S models, there is also bore scoring on the cylinders on some rare occasions. I have 68K mls on my 06 Cayman here in Ireland, and never have had a problem. The problems, if they surface, happen mostly to garage queen, low use cars, and also cars that are driven too gently !!! These engines like to be worked !! . Oil changes at 5k mls is preferred, as clean oil is essential with this car. Mobil 1 0-40W Syn seems to be the preferred choice and Porsche`s recommendation, though i really like Castrols Evotech as an alternative. Both are great oils.

    All of the brake calipers are red on modern Porsche sports cars unless they have carbon ceramic brakes and then they're yellow. Also the H6 in the Cayman S is nowhere near the largest in the Porsche range, there are at least 4 larger, the one in the Carrera S, the GT3, GT3 RS, and 911 Turbo(S).

    Calipers on the non S Cayman and Boxster are black. Back when this review was done, 2014, the 3.4 engine was almost as big as the 3.6 Litre motor in the 911 variants like the Carrera S etc. Forget about the specialist versions costing mega money, and its not like he said it was the biggest engine.

    +John Davis screw that, less weigh less distance between the engine, your ears and shorter wheel base. When in the world do you use the rear seats of your 911. So whats not to like about a 2 seater ?

  • @Baerchenization

    @Baerchenization

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Zhemin Lin I totally agree with John; for starters, I could not tell that the engine is actually right behind the seats - you don't hear the engine because it rattles behind your seat, you hear it through the exhaust, and that is always in the same place. And I can't fully enjoy the 2 seat concept because it is kinda anti-social - I can't even drop off my best mate and his chick at the airport because there is only one extra seat; and of course you will be going pretty much anywhere alone. So I would actually be much happier with a 911 as well (and I think the 991 just looks fantastic). I own a 981 Boxster as my only car, so I actually feel the lack of extra space, even if it is not for people but only 'stuff' all the time... btw, the longer wheel base from the 997 to the 991 for the 911 is considered one of the greatest improvements if you believe any review at all.

  • @zhemin

    @zhemin

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Baerchenization Then maybe you shouldn't be looking at sports cars. Some sports car with back seats, they are just there for regulation reasons and are pretty much useless (911 for example). If you can afford one of these im pretty sure you can afford a another day to lug your friends around. Anyway for me personally most of the time i'm in the car myself (so sad i know) Once in a while one passenger 'lugging a girl around'. 2 seater works perfect. Only problem i have is when you parked somewhere waiting for some one you can't recline your seat back and rest for while. I really miss that ;'(

  • @Baerchenization

    @Baerchenization

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Zhemin Lin By now I am really, really curious who came up with the BS that the 911 has rear seats for regulatory reasons :) Look, even up to the 90s, Porsche historically sold up to 70% in to the German market alone (and then there is still the rest of the world minus the US), and it has never been a regulatory concern there. American regulations are a non-issue in that respect. Nobody ever needed America to sell 911s, okies? The 911 simply follows the 356, and there the prototype had a mid-engine layout, but it got moved to the rear exactly so the rear seats could be fitted. Everybody can know that by reading any comment on the subject. And then the 911 simply followed conceptually. Why would I not be looking at sports cars? I am driving one right now :) And the 911 happens to be the most successful of them all. Nobody complains about the presence of rear seats in a Toyota Supra or a Maserati, either; or other cars with "useless" rear seats, it is somehow only the 911 :) Btw, they are not useless. I am 6'1 and while of course I would not take a road trip in that thing, it is just so OK to get a lift in to town so I can get drunk and let somebody else drive on that night... plus, you can simply throw a lot of bags and crap there, while all you can do in a Cayman/Boxster is stuff an empty McDonald's bag behind the seat. Also, if you read Porsche owner forums, while they are OBVIOUSLY Porsche fans there (duh!), when they consider a car just for track days, NOBODY proposes that a Boxster would be a great idea, they tell you to get a Lotus with a track package - that's the Porsche forum, not the Lotus forum, see how fair and sensible they can be? ;) ... so much for looking at sports cars.
