Thank you for excellent video.I rebuilt my starter today in just two hours.It cost me only $23 (brush assembly and accessories. A new genuine Honda starter would cost me $800. Thank you again.

Update: I received the brush set (the plunger set was fine and I didn't have to replace it) and reassembled my 2004 Accord starter a couple of days ago. I had the starter tested at O'Reilly and Auto Zone. The OCD in me compelled me to test it more than once. The starter passed all the tests and works like a dream, so thank you again for your thorough and easy-to-follow instructions.

By the way I fixed my Honda starter with this video and a 14$ brush set. There are no 3 spring business with the 2012 starter. So I skipped all that part of course. The 2012 Honda Civic brush set was hard to find so I ended up typing 1.8 L 2013 Acura ILX and it worked and the part matched on my Amazon vehicle list. Arrived in 2 days. Put it all back together after cleaning the inside of the starter and using the red sticky Lucas Grease in certain spots from this video.. I took my starter that I rebuilt to O'Reilly's and my friend hooked it up to the machine to test it and he said it works just fine it's just not showing 100% power it was 91% power. He said that's because it's the original motor inside there and they do wear out. This was on my 2012 Honda Civic LX 1.8 L with 160 thousand miles on the original starter motor. Ended up fixing it for $14. If I knew a little bit more before I bought the $14 part, in addition I would have also bought the spring, I forgot what it's called but there's a large spring in the starter that is only 5 dollars. I would have replaced that since I had it all apart at the same time. The hardest part of the build was putting the little tooth washer on top of the plastic spindle so it fits in the groove.. I think I ended up using a 5/16 inch deep well socket and pushed it on evenly. Taking off the passenger wheel and using four 6 inch extensions with a taped bendu socket adapter helped tremendously for starter bolt removal. Took 1 hour to remove 8 bolts and squeeze clips. Most of the time is spent with the plastic pieces on the underside of the vehicle. Well to those who read all that you'll be able to fix your original starter also, a genuine honda starter cost 350$ plus. Thats why i kept mine. Just take your time and don't get frustrated when the mosquitoes and no-see-ums are biting. LED work light and cell phone light helped. Use jack stands and rear tire blocks, set parking brake. Use your harbor fright multimeter to test your starter motor resistance on each copper tab. Two of my starter motor tabs we're really bad and broken . I just sanded and cleaned them with 300 grit paper lightly until started Shining. Fun project , You.ll get it her done.

Son and I just rebuilt his 2007 TSX starter using these instructions, OEM parts, and saved a ton. Used an old Mokycote Type G-N grease with graphite that I had laying around. Thanks!!

Ok. You did a good presentation. Brushes and stator and commutators are all car words but you did very. Well in describing the steps and difficulty. You get five stars.

Following up: The Plunger Set for '03 Element (shows a "fit" on hondapartsnow.com) turned out to be a greater OD than the one in the starter. I couldn't use it. I cleaned and reused the original one. Two of the brushes on the brush set were completely worn down to the wires. No wonder it was only starting intermittently. I used brake and caliper lubricant (on hand) to grease all the parts you identified. One thing was the rubber boot below the positive cable was hard to get reinstalled. It's old, dry and not flexible. I don't even know if a replacement part is available. But it was a pain to get it reinstalled at the end of the rebuild. My starter was a little different internally, but essentially the same. Although only done yesterday, the vehicle is starting with no issues. Thanks so much!!! I would not have attempted this without your video.

Just FYI, for my '03 Element, AT, the Brush Holder Set is a different part number: 31210-PSA-J54. Plunger Set is the same: 31230-RNA-A61. I also am removing the starter from the top, so I'm purchasing an intake manifold gasket: 17115-RAA-A01 and throttle body gasket: 16176-RAA-A01. I am getting them from hondapartsnow.com. Cheaper, even with shipping to CA than local dealer. (I'm too old and don't have the strength to try the starter removal from under the car without a lift). Thank you for this really helpful video. Even three years later, it remains super helpful!

This was actually an incredibly thorough, detailed, and accurate video to rebuild an Accord starter. Watching the video and following the step by step instructions gave me the confidence to take apart a 2004 Accord starter which looks slightly different than that of the 2006 Accord, but the components were almost exactly the same. Now, I have to order the brush and plunger kits to reassemble the starter. So, thank you very much. P.S. I had already installed another starter in the car which I bought online, but wanted to rebuild my old one as a challenge since I have never rebuilt anything before.

Thanks for the video! I was able to clean it up and got the bush set from Honda then reinstall. This is just about 95% the same as a 2013 EXL Honda Accord sedan (3 springs aren’t in this starter). FYI I managed to loose the disk but took the disk from the old one.

@@AgelessNomad I broke down, inspected and cleaned all hardware but wasn't sure about the proper installation or the sping that comes with the solenoid contact point as when trying to remove the tab the plastic rod broke I didn't see the spring, looks like it flew in the air... I got it right, starter is like new again!

Excellent video. The only thing I would have done different is if you use a dab of epoxy, I would lightly sand that plastic stud in a twisting motion so it almost has slight grooves almost like bolt threads so that when your epoxy sets, it has something to "bite" onto. I would worry the smooth surface of the plastic pin would not allow enough grip for the epoxy

If your using a new switch shaft and new lock ring, using JB Weld to lock it all together is completely not necessary IMHO. It is almost impossible to install the lock ring incorrectly. I'm a mechanic for a living so that is my opinion. I just did this repair to my 07 Accord starter and this video was very helpful. Skip the JB Weld step. Thank you

I used a new plunger and lock ring. It looked good, but it was not. I got ~10 starts out of it before the lock ring popped off at a gas station. So I had to get a tow and I got to re-do the job all over again. I strongly recommend using JB Weld. Also, the lock washer didn't fail in my case. The plunger eroded at the lip the lock washer grabs onto. That's what failed.

Becareful when you hook up the starter during install. I bought a new Genuine Honda starter. I installed it, and the contact tower broke when I tightened the cable lug. Now I am rebuilding my brand new starter...

Mines pulling about 3x the amperage a normal one should pull when starting after replacing just the brushes. Same as it was before and struggles to start. Tested the solenoid like you showed but it seemed fine. If it's engaging the flex plate plunger should be fine? Maybe solenoid issue or magnets in the outer case? Got a

Thanks for a really detailed video, would it be same for SM-71001(8th Gen Civic) Mitsuba starter too?

You didn't check the bushing in the end cap for wear? I just pulled apart two bad Mitsuba starters from 2 different 2009 Civics, seem to be the same as this one. Both bushings were sloppy and there was uneven wear on the armature and brushes. I was curious to see how you removed the bushing. The rebuild kit I got also came with 3 tiny brass bushings for the reduction gears but the originals were steel and not worn out at all. There are 2 more mystery bushings that I assume would go somewhere in the drive section. I don't even see how you would disassemble that if you wanted to.

Hello, I replaced the Brush Carbon set. Once I have installed the back plate the starter stopped working, and when I remove the back plate the starter works like a magic. what is the problem? what should I do?

I must have missed what grease you used. FSM says molybdenum disulfide but I’m not sure what product off the shelf to use. Another video used white lithium grease.

078254053592 is the UPC of the grease I used. The rebuilt starter in this video is still running perfectly today using that grease. 🫶

you can go to honda parts now .com they have OEM Parts cheaper than the dealer. but if the parts are within service limit you don't have to replace them just perform all the tests he mentioned if they pass you shouldn't have to replace anything. it will help you if you know someone who has all data or Mitchel on demand. you can go to a shop and they can let you have a printout of how to disassemble the starter and test it. Hope this helps.

On that tipe of starter you do. I do it on my shop. Some shops don't do it. they just paint over it.
