2006 Harley FXDCI Primary Noise

Been noticing some clackity clack noise coming from the primary on my 2006 Harley Super Glide Custom. Seems to be getting louder and I found little bits of metal when I drained the primary oil. Ordinarily, I would just chalk this up to the typical noises you you hear with a big twin engine, but I am concerned about the increase in noise and metal in the oil. I've owned this bike for about a year and it has been running great. About 17K miles on the odometer. Could this be coming from the compensator? Should I be concerned or just put it back together and roll with it? A friend at work just told me to put on some louder pipes and forget about it. Please comment below with suggestions (all suggestions appreciated).

Hello Sir, if you idle standing still with no gear in, and you hear a noice from the rear part of the primary, and this noice disappears when you pull the clutch and put 1st gear in, then it is the inner primary bearing and race which has failed. The remedy is to replace the race and the bearing. I did this on my 2006 FXDL. I also replaced the stock tensioner with the Hayden tensioner. Still it works fine. Good luck!

Had the same noise on my wifes 06 dyna . it was the bolts in the rotor housing ,over the stator. Bad design, Harley changed it in 07 and made it one peace.

It's the chain tensioner that chops teeth. the best thing is to weld it on, you still have the suspension.

Look up at the inside of the primary cover and see if your chain has been nicking it as that may account for your metal particles in the oil. On the sportsters and older Evo motors the push block is solid manually adjusted and not automatic so you do not have this problem. See if you can find a manual old style push block to replace your semi auto ratchet version.

Try a thicker Vis oil. Try some GO 90w. Install a new primary chain. Inspect sprocket teeth for wear when installing the new chain.

This is the actual only video I've seen where you show the noise from the primary itself. In my specific case I have a whistling sound when I slow down recently that sounds like a bomb being dropped out of an airplane. It's very faint but you can hear it when the clutch is pulled in and you're coasting up to a stop light

Not sure. I replaced the slider cam in the compensator (behind the front primary sprocket) and the primary oil (went from Bel Ray to HD Syn3) and it has quieted down. There is still a little noise, but nothing like it was. Comparing the new to old slider cams, the peaks on the old one had about .020 wear. I have the factory exhaust, so I can hear a lot of mechanical noise from the engine. I think this is normal since there are a lot of moving parts. The clacking noise I had was something that got louder over time and it did not sound normal. Probably wouldn't hear it if I had louder pipes though. Thanks, LB

Yes. I replaced the compensator forged ramp piece and it quiet down. It appeared to be worn. Harley doesn’t offer a replacement part, so I had to buy it after market. I traded this bike in on a Heritage Softail a few years ago. I now have another Super Glide (08 anniversary). I really like the Dynas from this vintage.

YOu really want to fix it ? I pulled the chain drive out ; and replaced it with a 3 inch belt drive. That was over 10K miles ago, on my 99 twin cam, still works just fine and dandy. Harley will never go with a primary belt drive. They are too robust, and dealers would take a huge hit in "shop income" not fixing primary chain drive problems......
