2006-2009 Honda Ridgeline radiator replacement
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
How to remove, and replace the radiator. This truck had a transmission cooler leak that pumped trans fluid into the coolant. I also had to get as much old "coolant" out as I could, and change the transmission fluid. 2007 2008 06 07 08 09.

Saved this video for when I got home. Rusty, your skill and video's are nothing short of brilliant, I love the comments and content. Always something to learn. One of the best Mechanics/Techs on KZread.
I have a 1st gen ridgeline. As a preventative measure, I will be replacing the radiator. This video is helpful and gives me the extra " can do" needed to tackle these jobs.
Watching everything get put to back together in fast motion was super satisfying. Thanks for the video man.
If you take the transmission hose leave it disconnected after you put the radiator in then have a transmission funnel in the fill whole with 10 quarts of fluid ready to dump start it up and keep dumping it in until it comes out clean. Then check and fill the pan as needed.
i didnt get the smod yet but building up the confidence to do this myself this video is what i needed. honestly laughed pretty good with that cut scene to the ridgeline vomit explosion on itself.
Glad to see you again, thanks for sharing with us
This guy is awesome. Tells it the way it is. Very informative, and funny
I laughed out loud when you talked about the crazy jizz. You earned my sub. I'm picking up an 06 ridgeline in a few weeks and am going to have the radiator done as a preventative measure.
Rusty!! You have the best content!! Never stop making great video!!

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing.
Excellent my brother thank you I have a 2011 model and I'm going to take a look at that radiator also to before I have any problems I'd like to know if you're going to put an external transmission cooler on it instead of using the radiator it might work out better this way you have no problems with the transmission ever
Thx for your thorough Break Down and NOT using the Mechanics second Language every other foul word in the book, thx for just the Facts.

Welcome. I sometimes do, but this job must not have gotten my goat.
The exact same thing happened to my 06 Ridgeline. Including the fitting popping off when I went to remove the hose.
Thanks for the effort you put into your videos!! Got an original Honda radiator in my 07 RTL that started leaking at the top seams. I'm about to finish install of a new oe radiator from Napa/APDI. How important is the upper foam seal, which is missing from new radiator?

I would say not very. I believe it is to help keep hot engine compartment air from going back through the front of the radiator.
What an amazing lava lamp story, you made it look easy. I would have messed up this diagnosis! With it overheating, and with oil in coolant, I would have jumped to the wrong conclusion it was a failed head gasket. Presumably the overheating was because air made its way from the trans into the cooling system, then the trapped air caused ineffective cooling. I guess I could have proved the diagnosis by removing the trans cooler lines, then add water to fill the rad, then pressure test and watch the water/oil emulsion leak out the trans cooler connection fittings. Would you consider adding soap and water to try and clear the emulsified oil from the coolant?

The oil in the engine was fine. If I put a detergent in the coolant, There would have been a bigger mess then what I dealt with. Most people would just hook a garden hose up to a heater hose, and push it out all over the place.
This video is amazing....what was the yellow funnel that you had on where the radiator cap would be....how did you make it or what is it.....also thank you for no foul language because I can share with friends and younger folks without that bad language knowledge. Thank you so much, Grant C Anderson
GREAT JOB BROTHER.
Cool glad I moved from Benson MN years ago.
Good job, I have an 07 with zero rust anywhere, It only has 104K on it but I suppose I should get a new radiator for safety concerns. If I order and OEM from rock auto will that work ?? thanks

This comment is only adding to my confusion. You're welcome.
Thanks for posting this video .I have a 2007 Ridgeline and I think that I have the same problem. Only other thing could be is a blown head gasket or a cracked head letting oil into the radiator . How can I tell the difference ? Was there any problems with the transmission after that ?
@EricPhaneuf

If the trans oil is at level when cold mean you have more oil than normal. The good level is when the oil is hot. Usually oil is lighter than wather so it stay up. Also, if you have this problem you will also have mixture with oil in your radiator.
nice job, good thinking on how to purge the muck out😆
Did the repair work? That stuff coming out of the radiator was grosser than gross. I have a 2006 Ridgeline and if this ever happens I think I will just junk it. The effort you put into this was amazing.

Yes. I saw the thing driving around about a month ago.
Very informative video. I cannot believe how rusty the parts are for a relatively new vehicle, it must be from the rust belt. A friend of mine told me this was a common problem on Honda's and that you can disconnect the transmission fluid line to the in the radiator transmission cooler to prevent this problem since it already has and outside radiator cooler. Is this true? Also, do you know if Honda updated this system to prevent the problem and if yes, what year did they start doing it since I am considering buying a Ridgeline but don't want the problem with tranny fluid mixing with coolant. Thanks.

The cooler lines in the radiator keep the transmission fluid at the optimal temperature of the engine. A replacement radiator should not have this problem.
Lava Lamps and Sake!! Trippy :P

How much transmission fluid was lost and did it need topping off ?

Can one bypass the antifreeze-coolant going into the radiator? Isn't there an external tranny fluid cooler?

And in today's culinary class: how to make aunt's cream pie.
When my transmission intercooler broke I cought it almost immediately so hopefully I haven't damaged my transmission. I'm about to walk out to my shop and rip her apartment. After replacing my head lights I really didn't ever want to pull the front fascia off again. It is pretty much a pain in the ass
