This car deserves to be saved. Manual transmissions that are put in cars that should not have them are always cool.

Odd, I have 2 of these both 2004 VUEs with Manuals, both about 200k miles each and they run like a top and shift like butter. That one looked like it was in rough shape.. Guess I got Lucky!

Hey Ian, I'm your loyal sub from the UK! I'm very curious about Saturns, can you do a video of your own Saturn?😊

I still see the ones with the 6 cylinder driving around sometimes. That Honda engine is great. Will always have a soft spot for Saturn products as I drove a 1994 SL1 from new to 190,000 miles as my first car. It was thoroughly decent. Always burned oil but never pooped out on me. Clutch failed at 190K and decided not to fix it.

You should have fixed it. Mine went 320000 and still sold it for 1800 2 years ago

Wow...the old Saturn sure got ridden hard and put up wet. There's always something odd about seeing a car bra on a cheap, old beater...if you peel it off, you'll see all manner and sort of mold stuck between the bra and the body...taking a fair amount of paint off as well. 96,000 miles divided by 19 years is only 5,052 miles per year, so its ailments are due more from time than distance. Anyhow, a tip of the beer bottle to this Saturn Vue...it was a soldier!

I think Saturn would do well today, especially to help Chevrolet consolidate its vast and confusing lineup of SUVs

Being a Saturn SL1 owner back in the day, I was invited to a preview of the VUE before it was released to the public. I actually thought it was a great product with a good manual transmission. I really do think your example has some maintenance issues.

These cars became hood rides quickly. Maintenance issues were common with Vues.

i actually liked Saturn, its like GM's quirky brother

I still have my 2005 Saturn VUE, 5 speed manual with 161k. Same clutch, does not eat oil. I've been driving it since I purchased it new in 12/04. Love my Saturn!!!!

Hello, can you tell me if there is 62 inches length after rear seat is down. I need to haul a 60 inch box for work purposes.

@henrywashington3732 It depends on where you have your driver's and passenger front seats positioned. I measured 68 inches of space behind my driver's seat and 63 inches behind the passenger seat. The passenger seat also has a hard back. It folds completely flat for additional cargo space. If you do that, it is 9.5 feet, but it would have to be a narrow package. I used to put a kayak in the car this way. Let me know if you need any other dimensions.

I learned how to drive on my mom's 2003 base model Vue. It had manual everything. It was fun.

Is this car owned by a KZreadr? Seems like I just recently saw a video on "why I drive a manual", which for him was a manual trans vue. Can't remember the name.

I still have my 2004 Saturn Vue with a 5 speed manual and 295k miles. The shifter starts to stick but I got it fixed and now shifts like butter.

I got mine for $650. Put another $400 into fixing/cleaning it up. I put 15000 miles on it last year. It got rear-ended and I got $1300 to fix it. I went to the junkyard and grabbed another bumper cover for $50. Best car ever.

My ex had (and may still have) a 2002 Vue.

And there was a clip somewhere if I recall that was the shift cable that messed it up. Replacing the cables helps and liquid wrench. I like the Vues!

AWE!!!! I hope it doesn’t go to the crusher!! It has less than 100k! I would pay more than scrap value for it or they could just donate it to a true Saturn enthusiast family. LOL!! My mom still has the 95 Saturn she bought brand new! There’s definitely something wrong with that Vue for it to be shifting that way.

I have a 4 cyl 2003 Vue with 150K miles and that manual transmission. I got it 2 years ago with 127K miles and have driven to Phoenix AZ from San Antonio, TX 5 times. I was iffy when I got it and now consider it one of the most underrated SUV's ever

I had a 2001 saturn SC2 3 door and it had a great manual transition. Was zippy and shifted great

I owned 2008 with the Honda 3.5 6cyl. It took me all over the northeast. Only problem I had was Rear passenger door window driver side stopped working.

The original buyer must have wanted to be different when they got the manual. Manual SUVs were starting to die out in 2005. These cars got cheap quickly and became common sights in the hood. I still see them occasionally, usually barely holding together.

I had an 03 Saturn vue 5 speed manual in my home country (Haiti) but as I just moved to the U.S last november I'm looking for one in the U.S but only the manual version, engine design is simple and easy to work on (DIY), it has hard shifting issues but I fix it my self, just buy new shifter cable and get it replaced my self, I also bought new OEM bushings , this thing is strong and kinda fast because if the gear ratio, never had engine oil issue, it's N/A and no VVT no variable compression, man I love that car

I got a Grey one with the manual... it was like you said "punching my best friend to get it in gear"... but then I just grease the shift cables and now I can slap gears

My buddies first car in 2021 was a Saturn view. It had very bad electrical issues where it would die on him otw to work or school and sometimes turn back on. Other times it would just die. But no one could figure out the issue. Needles to say they got rid of that and got him a Toyota Solara that he later blew up otw back from indy

We bought a shiny new Ion with the same drive train in 2004. We drove it for 270,000+ mostly trouble free miles. We even taught our kids how to drive and never replaced the clutch. I changed the oil every 3000 miles and never had any problems with oil consumption. This was one of the best cars we’ve ever owned. The only trouble we had was ignition switches going out every three years or so.

my grandpa had one about identical to this. didnt have it real long and the engine blew up😂

I wish gm kept Saturn as an opel import brand like Vauxhall in the UK. A video on a manual Saturn Astra would be awesome.

My parents almost bought one that was when they had Opel V6s. Went with a S10 Blazer instead

Does anybody know how long this 4 cylinder manual transmission last? With the gas prices I'd rather have the 4 cylinder than the 6 Thanks in advance.

I have a friend who's dad owns one also in Manual but I taught him how to drive stick shift in it so that he could drive it to work. One day he called me on the side of the he called me on the side of a road saying it was toast, R.I.P. Saturn Vue 🕊️

Saturn's a brand that should have NEVER been fully integrated into GM ops. They began extremely competitive, going toe-to-toe with the Japanese at a time when traditional American automakers couldn't. Such a frustrating death of Saturn, Saab, and most importantly, PONTIAC. 💔

I own a 2005 Saturn Vue with the 5 speed manual, runs great and shifts fine, have 136 thousand miles on it, you can't hear it run, 30 mpg on the highway, has the 2.2 eco tech engine, mine has the sun roof, power locks, windows and cd player, we have owned ours going on 13yrs, it still looks good, frame is good, service regularly, paid for, too good of car to let go, I think Saturn gets a bad rap, but check out some of the new cars with engine failures and frame rust in a few years, electrical issues and etc etc,

My car from college, an used 2003 Saturn Vue 4 cyl FWD 5 spd with a crunchy 3rd gear I never got fixed but through the 4 years It only required oil, tires and the shifter fork/bushing as my shifter went numb when I raced somebody that wanted to cut me in a stoplight (I know stupid 20yr old me). Unlike some heavier duty transmissions that piece was made of plastic, fortunately it was cheap and easy to replace (right below the shifter boot). Yes it was a poky ride but it got decent MPGs

And yes, my Vue also had its horn fail (I replaced the speaker with a cheap one from autozone and reused my steering wheel) and the missing button on the center stack is the hazard switch, it seems like it broke in all Vues I've seen, mine did for sure at age 8 but it lasted way more than this as I sold it running at 130K miles and still saw it on the streets 4 years later

The shifting linkage had to be lubricated regular to keep it working well. It was cheap and plasticity typical of many FWD GMs. If that was done regular it was pretty decent. The Saturn S-cars also same story. Pretty good manual trans despite a kinda cheap plastic shifting linkage. The CVT ones were all junk unfortunately

I always thought the VUE badge on the dash was a casette deck.

They were Auto only. The Honda V-6 was a sleeper in those VUEs, but they would occasionally eat the Honda auto trans

Saturn could have been cool had they stayed independent from other GM trash. Instead, GM trash took over, and that's why this VUE interior was so horribly bad.

The worst Gm interior in my opinion is the 97-03. Good lord it was terrible

The side view reminds me of a Land Rover Freelander 2

Shifter cables need lubed or replaced. Put a NOS shifter and cables in ours.

Best part about the Saturn Vue was the V6 3.5L engine and transmission made by Honda. They last forever. Mine has 427k

Owned an 06 Manual Vue, that shifter had no business being so heavy to shift into any gear. Literally kept you from doing any kind of sporty driving.

I’ve heard the Vues with the Honda engines are really reliable. I had the 2.2 for like 3 months and hated every second of it. I only like the height it sat at and the ride wasn’t too terrible. I could not stand that engine and transmission though

When I was young I like these because i like the looks and it’s not really what you gonna see on the road every day and it’s from a strange GM brand (IMO) but I like the second gen better

My dad still has a 2005 Vue, but his has the 3.5L Honda V6! Great, smooth acceleration, but everything else unfortunately is still mid 2000s GM.

These cars(though ugly) kind of have a nostalgia factor to them. My parents owned three Saturns in total. They loved their 98 and 03 L200, but the 2009 Aura left a lot to be desired. Good cars all in all until GM 100% took over the brand and started sharing chassis with Pontiac(which my dad HATED) and Chevrolet. They were definately no Honda or Toyota, but they served their purpose as a cheap and affordable option for those with smaller budgets and for the most part they served that purpose well. RIP Saturn.

@Jazc-mp889 the L series was their second Saturn. That was the 2003 L200. Their first Saturn which was a 1998 was an SL2 if I remember correctly. They didn't particularly care for the 2009 Aura like they did the L200(which was their favorite of the 3).

Why is it being crushed..? Why not just donate it to a family in need??

Sometimes getting a car like that to where it's safe to drive is a very expensive and time consuming endeavor, to where it's not even worth it. Plus ongoing maintenance costs are higher than something newer. I had a 2005 Yaris I wanted to give to my sister...to get it safe to drive, it would have needed a back axle, extensive welding along the seam where the frame and the chassis meet on the passenger side, front struts and sway bar, new parking brake line, rotors and pads, alternator, and something was wrong with the idle, I never got around to investigating that. Within a year or two, it would've needed work done on the driver's side frame, I'd done a patch job weld on a hole on that side years ago that was starting to look pretty rough. It also had an open recall on it, and getting it to pass inspection in my state would have been a nightmare. Long story short, woulda been thousands in parts, and months of my time to get all that done (or pay and arm and a leg to have it done at a shop.) I sold it for parts and gave my sister that money and the money I would've spent on parts for the Yaris, and she used it as a down payment for a 10 year old Civic which has needed nothing but oil changes so far. It's safer and more reliable than the Yaris ever would have been, and the Civic is an automatic and she doesn't know how to drive stick...so add a new clutch in a year or two to the above repair costs. The monthly payment on the Civic is reasonable, especially when you consider the tradeoff of continuing to spend time and money to repair failing parts on the Yaris.

If Zack only had two cars left on earth to pick from ..would he take the manual Vue or the Fiat 500x ?🤔

Yeah, the J35 V6 engine that Honda and Acura used in their various models. That was the Redline trim though.

I wonder if the manual being so miserable to use is due to this one being beaten to an inch of its life. Abused animals don't exactly love their owners.

GM mismanaged Saturn and after the 2009 bankruptcy shut down Saturn. Saturn cars were not supposed to similar to GM's other brands. Saturn's were unique from other brands. GM used cheap plastics back then

Geez...96,000 miles and you're just breaking in a Toyota, Honda, etc. Maybe it was severely abused, but that car looks and sounds like it drives terrible for something with that few miles on it. I can't believe they were selling a low/ mid-priced car with that cheap interior. Plasicky is fine, but throw in some more fabric, make sure the panel gaps are reasonably tight, and upgrade the plastic quality past 1990s standards. Is it any wonder that affordable car buyers gave up on GM and moved to Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, VW, or any number of nicer and more reliable offerings? This car is the epitome of GM and American car company mismanagement. I rented a 2007 Ford Escape hybrid on Getaround and found very similar experiences with the quality and how badly the vehicle was holding up. What's sad is that there were some truly useful, innovative, and fun cars produced by the big three around this time, they were just poorly executed and value-engineered to failure. It's nice to see a turnaround at the big three in the quality of their nicer cars, but I really hope they don't simply give up the market of affordable cars to the Japanese, Korean, and German manufacturers. I don't think that putting all your eggs in expensive high-end EVs and trucks are going to be a recipe for long-term success. The economic tides are such, that the average North American will be less and less able to afford these large, expensive vehicles in the long run. They also don't sell well internationally, except maybe in markets like the Middle-East.

I don’t get you Americans getting hyped for manuals in regular cars. In sports one I get it but normal commuter cars don’t. As European I’ve driven manuals a lot and I’m never gonna own one. I’ve had automatic cars only and that’s the way to go.

The reason is that we get VERY few of them. 99% of our cars are automatic, even sports cars. So finding out that a Saturn vue could have a manual, is like discovering for favorite footballer can also sing opera.

Such a bad SUV. 2nd gen Vue (aka Opel Antara) was better (still some GM nasty thing are hard to avoid; our 2011 Antara had rust issues, squeaky plastic and poor fuel economy).

Gotta love American cars - absolute crap! I’ll stick to my German cars which are well built - the people who say “oh well they’re not reliable” either don’t own a car, or treat their German cars like Toyotas, which you can’t do. Take care of your car and it’ll take care of you
