@@voiceofreason2674 Really? Maybe you're not in North America as I never-to-rarely see X-Types or S-Types anymore (Even back in the day.) Certainly never the S-Type R. What's funny is that horrendous embarrassing Hyundai/kia that "looked like" the S-Type (from 40 feet away, at the front, as it was approaching.) still gets me from time to time. From "oOoOo" to "O YUCK" in 3.7 Seconds.

Had one for 22 days. Luckily it was totaled by a drunk in a F-150. He thought it was bad luck and was trying like hell to go places while his left wheel was sitting in the middle of the intersection. I thought of it as divine intervention. The lord saving me from my own bad choices.

We bought one new in 2002 and owned it for over 10 years and 270.000 km / 170.000 mls. It was a gorgeous car that served us well: The (German) Ford and Jaguar dealerships were horrendous, the car itself was bloody brilliant! Also, we switched to an S-Type (since sold) and an XK8 in the meantime. Brilliant cars, only those who never were interested enough to buy or maintain them say otherwise.

@@twongreen9968 Yes. Very. Just change the oil and maintain it just as you would any other car. Mazda and Ford used essentially this engine for decades, it's plenty strong enough. If you're buying one then make sure it doesn't rattle, it should be nice and smooth. They can have issues with the crank pulley but it isn't that common, nor is it difficult to fix if caught in time.

Ooh, nice! I've got an '04 S-Type I picked up about a year ago, and I love it. The only complaint I have is that I constantly have to correct people that think they're being original when they ask how I like my Taurus. "Nono, that's the X-Type. This is a Lincoln LS." As if, somehow, that's any better. LOL That's the reality, though. You really can't be too serious driving an '04 luxury anything. If I was rich, I'd buy a new something. If I wanted to be unique and pretentious about a used car, I'd buy a 30+ year old Rolls Royce. I simply saw a good car at a good price, and while my inner Boy Racer quietly lives on in the dark recesses of my mind, the aging, overworked, arthritic 30-something I am has a cozy, comfy place to relax for long commutes or short trips to the store.

I’ve grown up surrounded by British vehicles, in a community where Land Rover and Jaguar still command a certain traditional reverence. We own a MINI and MG, and we love our quirky British brands. Jaguar is an institution, and even in the best of them, they experience their highs and lows. As someone that is highly enthusiastic of legends like the E-Type, the 120, the XKSS, etc, I still recognize the place for this kind of vehicle. It was a stepping stone in the history of the brand, and I respect that. I think the looks are still distinct and modern, the interiors are still sumptuous and luxurious, and performance can still be decent, even with all the Ford underpinnings. I felt the same way about Volvo - Ford-era Volvo’s aren’t bad vehicles, but like the Jag, they differ from tradition, they reached to different buyers to boost their sales and influence in a difficult time for the industry, and that’s fine. Both marques are doing exceptionally well today, putting out phenomenal vehicles that are, arguably, class-leading in many regards.

For anyone considering purchasing one, I absolutely love my X Type.... but as a weekend car. The thing is, it MUST be properly maintained, it's not a Toyota first of all, and you need to check the pinch welds and door jambs for rot before you buy. I found a 2002 3.0 with a manual transmission, every bell and whistle, sport package, and only 110k miles for $2500 in mint condition with all maintenance and recalls done. I'm now at 142k and have only replaced a Bilstein shock, some cosmetic stuff, and a new key fob to bring it right back to showroom. Full synthetic oil changes every 3000 miles (no longer) and premium gas are the biggest drags, but I'm averaging 22mpg's in a 20 year old car so I absolutely can't complain. It does handle like its on rails and has plenty of power for its' size, and I mean I throw the thing around and let it eat. The automatic's are shite, and all of their transfer cases are too after 2003, when Jaguar started substituting in more Ford garbage. The frame and body panels are galvanized and the paint/lacquer are thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. Auto-leveling xenon headlights, auto windshield wipers, heated windshield, the hottest heated seats I've ever sat in, sunroof, full size spare, torque-vectoring AWD, Alpine 12 speaker sound system, and an exceptionally crafted wood and leather interior... Jaguar was way ahead of their time and it puts a fat smile on my face every time I hear the cat purr. Porsche actually designed the engine, and although Ford dumbed it down and mass produced it, Jaguar reintroduced variable valve timing and split-forged internals. If you can turn a wrench on a Ford, it honestly beats the shit out of any plasticky WRX I've owned, for less $$ (I got lucky though)

It turned out to be surprisingly reliable, at least compared to my friend's E46 BMW. When something in the rear suspension went bad, I bought Mazda 3 parts and the fit. Could've bought Volvo V40 parts as well. The touch screen was actually quite impressive for a '03.

The X-Type and S-Type are quite fetching. Specially because there are manual options available (albeit very rare). And that R version of the S is something to covet. Also great sound system, and the laquer or whatever the hell they cover the wood in is intoxicating to run your hand over. It's so damn smooth. WTF. I've heard the 2.5 is the one to avoid due to the transmission. And yeah, they're cheap as fuck now. Just don't go to Jaguar for parts, because you'll cry when the guy tells you what they want for them at the parts counter. "But it's just a screw!?" you'll whine... and he'll laugh at you.

It was low mileage and well maintained by previous two owners and has not needed anything since I got it beyond standard maintenance. I've put 15k miles on it since. Everything works on it and works well. But most important, it's a blast to drive. I bought it cheap and it owes me nothing. I've owned 15-20 cars over 30+ years and this might be my favorite.

So I actually currently own an 03 x type 3.0 sport. Some corrections to make are that all US marlet x types are awd. Additionally the reliability lies a lot in what the last guy was doing with it. Besides things like the transfer case, transmission, and rocker panel rust on the earlier models. The car really doesn't exhibit any sort of eletrical problems either, besides some small stuff. Also sport mode only raises the rev limiter to closer or at 7k rpm and holds shifts more, doesn't touch damper settings or steering.

X-Types as the 3.0 AWD are *pretty much* perfection when It comes to MidSize cars. The idea of a mini XJ (the greatest Luxury Sports Sedan ever created period) was brilliant - even if it didn't translate on a technical level. A fully aluminum monocoque chassis would've put this car way over it's desired market value & would've been quite the investment for Ford at that time.

It's weird. It's not that I ever thought Ford era Jags weren't real Jags, but growing up during the time these cars were being produced gave me the impression that Jags aren't real luxury cars in the first place. So I can forgive the FWD layout and the ford parts, it's definitely still a Jag, but the Jag name doesn't hold much weight to me compared to any BMW/Merc/Audi. It's a real Jag, and therefore it's not a real luxury car.

honestly up to 2004 these things had so many problems but they did fix almost all of them in 2005. I have the exact same car with damn near the same mileage as this and I had to replace the throttlebody and one single parking sensor. only thing that is annoying is some parts are expensive as there isn't a huge aftermarket for these things, some parts are dirt cheap and some stuff can only be bought at a jag dealer... but labour is cheap at a shop and so VERY easy to work on. much easier than my Audi A4 2004 and my bmw 528i or my Cadillac deville
