Mitchell, thank you for this video. It gave me the confidence to conquer my fear of the engine compartment today. Saved $230, and when it cranked up I felt ten feet tall. You added value to my life and I am grateful. Best!

Great video Mitchell. Thanks much for posting. I don't know if I would have taken this job on without watching your video first. Not counting times running to Home Depot to get the tools I didn't have, all in the job took me about 2 hours. For the next person taking on this job, a few other tips to consider... 1) sockets/wrenches - 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 17mm. The 8mm & 10mm will be used on the peripheral bolts holding the cables and battery plate supports. The 12mm is used for the four primary bolts on the battery plate and the single bolt connecting the battery cable to the starter. The 17mm will be used to remove the two primary bolts for the starter. 2) I strongly recommend using 1/2" sockets and torque wrench. The bolts are on very tight and often rusted. Using anything smaller is likely to break. I had the wrenches but didn't have all the metric sockets. It was definitely worth it. 3) A can of WD4 or other lubricant. As noted in #2, the large bolts are difficult to get off and doing anything to make it easier to remove the bolts will save you a lot of time, possible broken tools, and most importantly prevent too many bloodied knuckles. 4) After replacing the starter and before you put everything back together, drop the battery back in and connect it to the starter just to make sure everything is going to work. There is no base plate yet, so you need to make sure to the battery is stable so it doesn't fall when you try to start the car. If the car starts, you are good to go. Turn the car back off and proceed to put everything back together. If the car still doesn't start, unfortunately you have more work to do, but at least didn't waist your time putting it all back together just to find that out. Good luck to the next person taking this job on!!!

Your video saved me a lot of money. Mine currently has about 134k too, crazy! Your camera is high rez which helped a lot. Lots of gratitude. I knew it was the starter because I tapped it with a hammer and the Pilot started up. Wanna hear a funny story? I went to Home Depot THREE times because my shitty tools kept breaking when trying to undo those two big bolts - two ratchets and two extenders LOL. THREE times! Now I'm going to go return an extender I didn't use and a $10 pipe I used for leverage. Tell your wife that you are awesome and my wife thinks I'm awesome for doing this myself I think tonight is going to be a good night hehe ;-)

I'm glad it helped. It is a simple job if you have the proper tools. I would invest in a 3/8 and or 1/2 inch breaker bar from harbor freight. I bought one for about 15 bucks, and they make light work of those stuck bolts. Remember to use a penetrating oil before you go thrashing on an old bolt.

Thanks for sharing. I was able to replace the starter in my wife’s car. Everything was easy until I got to the two 17mm primary bolts on the starter. I used my weight to crank down on the top bolt. So it was easy. But the bottom bolt was tricky and hard. I couldn’t access it from the bottom and it was hard to keep the extension steady. Because it would move whenever I applied pressure. I solved this by using a rope and making a loop to prevent the extension from loving. I was able to unscrew the bottom bolt and replace the starter.

Nice job on the vid. I had the thing go yesterday, stuttered, but it started. Today, same thing, but nothing! I looked it up, tried the “tap with a big bar” trick and it lit right up. Saw your video and knew I could do it. I used heavy duty impact 1/2” sockets for the tough bolts, and a big breaker bar. Not a lot of space to get any sort of a good pull, but I got them off. Biggest time-taker for me was when I dropped on of the darn battery pan bolts and had to find it. Whole thing soup to nuts about 2 hours. Anyway, got it in, and worked like a champ. I did have to use the old bracket off the starter for the one starter cable. Thanks for helping and allowing me to save at least $300 dollars. .

Evey G. Quines i did do it and it worked! It can seem overwhelming but it's very doable. Make sure you have the right size tools. I recommend a breaker bar and a torque wrench. Both are very cheap at harbor freight. This only took me 2 hours because it was my first time. Take pictures with your phone as you go so you remember how everything goes back together.

Irtiza Ashraf That is because it is a reman and not a new starter. Most remans are from Mexico, I have a noticed and have a decent failure rate. I have stopped using reman starters and alternators for this reason especially on Asian vehicles. Just happened to me on a 99 Nissan Maxima 2 weeks ago. Remy reman starter buzzed from the first start. Then engaged sometimes. I replaced it with a brand new Remy starter and it has been perfect every time. I would remove it and get a brand new starter.

Question ... were there any dash lights giving you hints ... or recall whether the D for Drive lit up in green when the engine didn't turn? Did it just suddenly go dead ... like you turned it off and went back to start it again later with it making no sounds? Could you still hear the fuel pump? I replaced the neutral safety switch which was suggested as an issue if the green D lights up when trying to start ... but after replacing it, it's still doing the same thing. Not up for switching out the starter only to have to change out an alternator as well. Hanging on to the hope that this might be it.
