Yes thats exactly what he's doing i believe! Clean 230k mis chassis. F150s last a long, long time w/ good maintenance! I bought a new '18 F150 Lariat FX4 I will keep 250k+ mis.

This is my favorite body style of F150. Glad to see this truck getting another lease on life. When my Tacoma gets to this point, I will be doing the same. Can’t see spending 50-60k on a new truck in the future.

His cost per mile for the next 200K for the repairs is about 5 cents per mile. If it's driven 500 miles a week on average, that works out to about $100 a month, each month until it reaches 200K from now. That's just covering these repairs, not anything that may arise between now and then. So, yes...even with the shocking outlay, it is STILL cheaper by far to completely overhaul an older vehicle instead of buying a new one. Car dealers and people who just want a new truck don't like hearing that reality but the numbers don't lie....just the truck salesman ;-)

The way I look at it, if the body is in good shape inside and out, and you like the vehicle keep her going. Of course doing the job yourself if you can, is the best option and stay away from rip off shops. Labor alone can be so high, most won't do it this way, and the lazy sure won't. A job like this is not for everyone, but for those who can, it can indeed pay off in the long run if you got the skills.

Very true, I often assume everyone has the know how and tools to tackle a job like this, but that often isn’t the case. However, I think most people assume they aren’t capable of things that they are, which is unfortunate. The good part about older vehicles is that the problem you’re facing has more than likely been documented on the internet already.

Great work! Watched from start to finish. Really impressive job. Totally worth the $10k or so it cost. You can't even find a truck like that for $10k, let alone with basically new parts AND an engine/trans warranty.

That's definitely the right way to fix one if your planning on keeping it forever. Just replace everything.

Did the same repairs on a clean high mileage non running 3 valve F250 I purchased: Six years later and she still runs like a top. Gotta love that vacuum hose on the lower backside of the intake manifold. Was a PITA to connect with the manifold installed, was difficult to reach.

I’m in the process of doing the same to a 2003 King Ranch with 470k miles. My 2009 has a 4.6 with 403k miles. Still life in her! The 5.4 is so crazy to work on! That 5.4 looks clean!

Exactly how I felt after rebuilding my 4.6 on my 97 f150. She purred quite from first start and been running good ever since. Wish I could have afforded a new one, would have been less than half the work. Fords can be tough to work on, you guys worked your ass off for sure, that would have took me much longer to do.

Strongest motor i ever owned! Headers programer intake camms ", i was getting close to 340 hps

When my 04 3V Triton puked it timing guides like most guys I chose to rebuild timing in place....my truk although not as nice as this one was at least very solid. It was mostly a workhorse. By the time you are done dealing with a hundred other things you will discover its far better to just replace the engine ....mine drove me crazy for months afterward with small crap....it just wears you out working on these things because they are so badly designed and no thought given to EVER repairing them. Your point abouth the intake is spot on ! I did the timing set but left the intake on....as soon as it was running again I had lean codes big time......had to go back in and pull the intake....what a nightmare. Seems the gaskets were dead and perhaps got disturbed doing the timing set just enough to leak when it ran again. The list of stuff that I did fix with the timing is long too and added to cost....power steering pump and lines...oil pump you MUST always do that ! Pulled the pan to clean the shredded plastic from timing guides out of it. Had to go back in and replace the oil temp sensor ! It throws codes if it can't read it ! That said it has run great for the last year so Im happy. Did 100% of the work myself still cost almost 4K Canadian dollars by the time I did plugs and coils. Worst vehicle I have ever worked on....04 was a complete re-design and this is how it was done ! Smokin toooo much stuff at Ford.

Nice work! I replaced mine myself in a 2008. Got the motor from Powertrain Products in Maryland. I hit that trans seal while I had the motor out. I'm only in about 5k though.

Backfire is caused by bad spark plugs. 300k miles on my 04 5.4 3v no issues ever (original everything). 15w40 8qrts since new..original: coolant,fuel system,power steering,trans fluid, coils,water pump,exhaust. Replaced: belt,pulleys,battery,e3 plugs, its on its 3rd alternater.

I like the looks of that truck so another 200k of life. 👍

I have an 05 aswell at 170,000 miles and am planning on going this route when the money and time is good. Love my truck and can't imagine going for the newer "prettier" models. They're too high maintenance and haven't proven they're loyalty as mine has.

They last a long time.. 5.4L 3V withstanding. The 6spd trannies are rock solid just replace fluid every 60k mis or 40k mis if you tow heavy! Owned 2 - F150s w/5.4L no issues. Now run gen2 Ecoboost '18 F150 Lariat FX4.

@@MichaelFletcher-to7mm that later yrs towards end of cycle had 6spd trannies. They used the 6spd till '17 in F150. Drive the new 10spd sometime ..its amazing.

I just replaced the exhaust manifolds, timing chain and tensioners, oil pump, got a phaser lock out kit with a tuner. Truck runs better than new. Spent $2200 total. The 5.4 3V doesnt have to be thrown in the trash unless you have some kind of major failure. They are tougher than people think

@@jakejacob9814 Honestly it feels better than it did before the phasers went out. I also put a full duel exhaust with X pipe on at the same time, so that probably helped the low end too. Im glad I went with the lock outs

I was at the same point with my truck. I went ahead and got a crate motor from Ford. 2k more for a whole reman engine compared to timing job components.

@@kawalaco That's one way to do it. I knew I had a solid short block (good oil pressure, no knocks, no oil usage or smoking), and I wanted to eliminate the whole cam phaser setup, so I chose the lockouts

Man… that is such a long and difficult job. But sweat equity is awesome. I’ve not overhauled a vehicle since 1983. I overhauled a 1968 F-250 with a 390. I was 16. It wasn’t hard. But when I look under the hood of my 2007 F-150 King Ranch……. It actually scares me. I could see myself becoming confused when I put it back together.

@@ah4800 Power and efficiency are second to ease of repair for my purposes, I've driven a 5.0 F-150 before and liked the power, but in usual ford style after they get a bunch of miles on 'em the top end gets noisy, the old 4.6 is hanging in there, only that's been done is a timing set before I bought it, no cam phasers, VCT solenoids, or variable intake runner actuators to worry about like with their newer engines

I have a couple questions. I love how these trucks look but isn't $10,000 in repair excessive? Wont it be better to get a used 4.6 2v from the junkyard inside?? I am not very familiar with these trucks and I don't know if the engines are interchangeable. I could understand a re manufactured transmission. In the case of the engine, are the re manufactured engines prone to problems again?? If I do get this truck, How long can I drive with the bad cams before it explodes?? Thanks

what wouldve been nice is a melling 360hv oil pump but im sure upkeep on oil changes will do fine

I have 310k on mine. Same year and engine, just a super cab and 2 wheel drive. I have a lot of problems with the drive. Pulling, steering wheel crooked, suspensions noises. Plus some engine misfires. Do you recommend I put some money into it? If so what would you do?

Alot of people talk trash about the 3v who have never owned one. They'll go as long as the two valves if you keep the oil clean. Poor maintenence and the fact that ford sold millions of them have given the 3v a bad reputation. FACTS.

When I changed the motor in my 2005. I purchased a engine from a 2011 F150 since it has newer style spark plugs Everything you changed mins the trans Banks Headers Vct lock out and HP tuners tune 👍👍

You can’t put a 2011 engine in a 2010 let alone a 2005 unless you want to spend thousands more to make sure the electrics function properly.

190000 and still running strong my 3v 5.4 . take care of your shit.

I have an 06 that is super clean and 113k. It runs good, but my second driver side exhaust manifold is cracked. I may put stainless headers on it, I won't go back with factory.

With Regular Maintenance. This thing will run for another 200k. Biggest thing to kill 5.4 3v is lack of maintenance. I do wonder if it would have been faster and easier on your back to just lift the cab off instead. Since you replaced the engine and trans in one shot.

Obviously, this one was meticulously maintained, inside and out - but still - engine/drivetrain needs to be replaced at 200,000? This isn't the 1960's when that was considered "long-lasting"!!!

How’s the engine doing, are they build with oem parts?

And if you were to fix that engine how in depth would you rebuild it

With the prices that new trucks cost, and you have also figured in sales taxes and deprecation along with the cost for the note and insurance. Doing a rebuild is very cost-effective as long as the rest of the truck is in good shape. Where I live the road salt will kill the vehicle. No rust sure beats a truck payment for 72 months.

How much did the transmission cost?

Is the new 5.4 better than the old one? As I understand it the old 5.4 3 valve had smaller oil passages. Is the new 5.4 built better?

I'm not sure where people have gotten that from. The size of the oil passages were never the problem, the factory oil pump is. The backing plate on the oil pump begins to fail, causing the oil to pour back into the pan instead of being sent to the heads and timing components.

I bought a 1998 ford f150 5.4 but was heavily neglected and my naive ass said that I can fix her up for cheap... parts are cheap but the amount of things it needed and still needs is pushing me to sell the truck. Moral of the story dont be a dumbass like me

There's a reason the GM trucks of that era are worth twice that of the Fords. GM just plain made a better truck. It's really a shame that they dropped the 300 I6 and the 351 V8, those were the last good Ford trucks.

If this was mine I don’t think I would of put another 5.4 back in, I would of gone with the 4.6. In my opinion there more reliable but that’s probably because I’ve had so much good luck with mine 315,000 and still running well

Dude 2006 f150 4.6 190k why is my brake light on. I’m not an idiot there is fluid in it the float sensor is working and the parking brake is not engaged and sensor is also working and there is no codes.

The only problem he made is not running the right oil from new you have to run 10w-30 conventional mine is all original engine and transmission never touched and my 5.4 three valve has 325,000 miles and still daily driven and still tows trailers weekly

Ford dealers take $10,000 to $15,000 off new sticker price at the drop of a hat. They know they'll make their money back in Engine (and drivetrain) sales

Don’t you sometimes just want to drop and old school 302 with throttle body EFI in these trucks to make things simpler. Good job guys lots of little details to do on a job like this.

If the headlights ever fade, restore them instead of replacing them.

The options are: get a newer truck where in 5 years ownership and like 60k miles, the repairs will probably be over that 9k, parts only but you know. It's less reliable in most cases, minimal good features. 9k plus labor so idk lets just say its 12k 15k, that's what....a 2010 truck? So get another truck with lots of potential problems and probably in rough shape...yeah no. Not all that sure that i'd pick a 5.4 3v as the truck to put all this money into, BUT if it can give him another 150k plus miles, that's surely worth it.

they are great but very expensive and hard to find. There was one for 25K, I tried to bargain and it was sold the next day. They have a small issue with breaking valve springs but usually 100% repairable.

Great job guys. The 5.4 is a work horse, but the dumbest things hinder that truck. ( laughs in 2004 fx4 5.4 ) cheaper to keep her if you can afford it. Haters gonna hate, taters gonna potate!

@@killabandit 9k in parts but what did that labor cost on top of that... this is gonna be 1-2k in labor easy so you have spent $12k+ in a 16+ year old truck with 230k+ miles. This is the dumbest financial move I’ve seen. You buy a newer truck and that’s right there is 50% of the cost. Newer, less use, more reliable, more capable.

@@DanielJaegerFilms Quality work done. Hats off to you! I did a timing job on my 5.4 2V and it took me 3 hours to just to remove the intake as the water crossover gaskets as well as the intake gaskets were shot. People underestimate the time it takes to do these jobs.

I’m dropping 10 grand as well in my truck as soon as the engine it has rn gives out

9k plus labor it's better then 30k or 40k new truck or more

I have an 07 almost identical to this truck mine is all red xlt with 147k the rear wheel lips are rusting as is the cab corners in 2016 at 105k the 5.4 3v died all the timing components went due to low oil pressure a new 5.4 3v from ford was installed for 7k its just a shame how the rust is eating away but im in Illinois

@@Bushy556 You are entitled to your opinion. Maybe I shouldn’t have phrased my question to you like that. Facts with these engines is stick with factory recommendation because the oil ports are unfortunately super small and the oil needs to be thin to get out quickly to the phasers. I’ve spoken to old school mechs I know plus vids all over. I have an 08 F150 106000 miles I use the Ford recommendation no problem clean block oil change every 4-5 thou. Had truck since 2010 ain’t risking thicker oil. That’s enough backup facts for me plus owning one.

If it was my truck, 4bt swap for sure.
