Great video, many thanks! I was able to do this from above, standing up, I didn't need to take off the skid plate and get underneath. Obviously each vehicle is different though.

What are the symptoms of the tensioner pulley going bad? When temps are cold and I do a cold start I get 1 squeak as soon as it starts then it goes away. Only if temps are cold or a cold start. Other then that the noise is never there. Any idea what that might be? Thanks in advance.

I went to replace my serpentine belt the other day. When turning the tensioner pulley bolt counter clockwise it wouldn't budge. Messed with it for about 10 minutes and nothing. Finally I just cut the bad belt off and tried. After that the pulley would lower like it was supposed to. I put the new belt on, but it didn't fix the problem. So I got a new pulley to put on. Now I am having the same problem as before with the pulley not lowering. I don't want to cut the new belt and have to buy another. Can you think of any reason it wont lower with the belt on?

Hi Joseph, I can't think of a reason that having the belt on or off would affect the tensioner not moving. I would have suggested using a longer handle or cheater bar, but you said that you were able to move the tensioner pulley once the old belt was off... The only other thing I can think of is that you might have a bad/stuck tensioner and have to replace the whole thing instead of just the pulley. Sorry you're having trouble with this, I hope you get it figured out. Thanks, Dan the Fix it Man

In the process of dealing with a bad tensioner pulley on a '93 4 runner with a 4.0 engine. Bearing is shot. Was able to get the tensioner pulley off from above, but was tough. Did you pull the driver side tire off or the engine guard underneath to get access?

@@DantheFixitMan if the belt has the right amount of flex/play/tension seems you’ll be ok not changing the entire tensioner assembly. I replaced my pulley only and the grinding noise is gone.

+Danielmires I bought the bearing at O'reilly Auto Parts. The pulley that they had listed as the replacement part was wrong so they just looked at the numbers on the bearing and were able to match it. Sorry, I don't remember the numbers or the size of the bearing. Thanks for watching and good luck!-Dan the fix it man

The pulley I took off my '03 4.7l is 4". AutoZone & RockAuto sell 3.5" replacements. Also the full tensioner assemblies they sell have 3.5" pulleys. Guess I'll be changing out the bearing.

Sorry Patrick, I wish I would have thought to put the part number for the bearing in the video at the time I did this job. If you're not near a parts store that you can take the old one in to match it up, it might be a good alternative to buy the whole pulley with the bearing. I think it was pretty inexpensive last time I checked. You may also be able to find the replacement pulley online and see the part number on the bearing itself if the picture is clear enough. Again, I am sorry I didn't put the part number in the video. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man
