    Ragging around Redrock Ridge to Snorkelling Cactus Weasels in a 550 - the dream. I played NFS 3 every day for so long with my dad on our first computer, sharing the keyboard with me on the arrows and him on WASD, up in the attic with the bare gypsum insulation that never got covered before we sold the place and moved out of London. He'd download fan-made cars after I went to bed, and we had a blue Chevy pickup that topped out at 300 - and always spun out on the back straight between the bridges on Hometown. For a while it really did feel like home. Now I'm 28 and drive a Focus Zetec with activated seatbelt pretensioners and a fucked bonnet lock.

    What I like about its design is that it's very pretty but its also subtle, most people won't even realize its a Ferrari at first sight, especially if it has a color like silver or black, the only way you really notice something's up about the car in front of you is when you see the wide rear flares at the back

    Every time when I see a 575M or 550M, especially in silver, I can't help but think of Bad Boys 2. This was Mike's hero car in that film. What's ironic is that they used both a 575 and 550 during filming. Most of the closeup beauty shots were a 550M (smiley grille) whereas the some of the shots during the Macarthur Causway chase were a 575M (round grille). They interchanged between the two.

    The 575 was a pretty poor car compared to the 550 it replaced. The issue of the 575 was that is was designed by committee, it was softer to cruise around Monaco but also wallowed in the corners, it had the F1 style gearbox to rich men could show off but it wasn't ready, a bigger boot for golf clubs but it upset the weight distribution. The 575 is a symbol of what happens when you give the customer what they want rather than believing in your own engineering.

    Got a chance to drive a gated manual 550 about 12-14 years ago. Unbelievable car. I can see why they're going insane, pricewise, as the last "analog" driving Ferrari V12. I couldn't believe how easy the gated manual was to use, either, after hearing for 20 years stories of recalcitrant Ferrari manuals and clutches that required 100 lbs of pressure. Thing was a dream to drive. Much better looking in person, too.

    I have a BMW Z4 with the Sequential Manual Gearbox, and it has the paddle shifters too. The lag in changes is like the time it takes to kick a clutch pedal in and throw the gear shifter into the next gear. Put it in sport mode and it’s even faster dumping you in the next gear. Pretty much made to emulate what Ferrari did here. I’ve got some videos on it

    A beautiful car, although you have to wonder about air conditioning being an option on a grand touring car like this one. It is not just the initial cost of the car that is impressive: at 30,000 miles (the point at which a Corvette's LS is just getting broken in) they need a $6,000+ servicing. And the Maranello has an issue with the leading edge of the hood rusting and if you don't trust your body shop to fix that a new hood is around $10,000. But they are beautiful cars, sticky switches and all, and it was nice that Classic Promenade let you drive it, even if you could not spell their name right at 5:55!

  • @pdcichosz

    @pdcichosz

    What's also worth mentioning is that the hood is made from aluminum. Apparently it's not a good enough reason to stop an italian car from rusting ;)

    This is the best Ferrari in my opinion, short stroke naturally aspirated v12, sequential tranny, grand tourer, front engined rwd, and best part? Flys under the radar. Nobody will go "OMG HOLY CRAP DUDE NICE RARRI HOWMUCHDIDYOUPAYFORITBROWHATSTHEZEROTOSIXTYISITTURBOCHARGED". Those in the know will gently come up to your car and say "that's a beautiful 575" and you reply with a soft but confident "thanks" and smile as you pull off pushing the right pedal all the way to 6.5k as you rip into the street.

    I want ppl who watch this appreciate phoenix's aesthetic which I think makes it unique among american cities. Arizona actually has some limits on water usage in landscaping so a lot of places just use rocks and native shrubs as their landscaping of choice. Ugly? sure you could call it ugly. But its unique as hell. Most american landscaping on the sides of roads is just like lawn with shitty ornamental trees but arizona it's DESERT. It's more interesting when cities lean into their natural environment than just copy of the same dull environment.
