I had a 1998 Dodge Intrepid ES that I bought in '99 as a leftover car. I managed to have it for 13 years and had no problems with it. Put over 155,000 miles on it too. Think it was due to it being the last Chrysler product made before the Mercedes takeover.

The 2.7 engine is fine, but it had a critically sized sump oil capacity. This meant the engine was very intolerant of owners exceeding the oil change intervals by even a little. Best to pull them in some and change the oil early. In the 300 application later, the sump was enlarged a fair bit, and the problem went away. Hope this clears it up.

Looked this up cuz I saw a CLEAN example last week. These old cars look surprisingly good when in good condition. My Mom drove the Chrysler counterpart to this. Still gave me flashback vibes. Always slightly preferred it over the Ford SUVs we had tbh, I'm just more of a sedan guy. But they're all nostalgia. Rest in Peace to her.

Intrepid's design was a revolutionary one at that time. We used to own one and Everybody with those boxy cars used to look at it with awe. Unfortunately they did have some mechanical issues. I still hope one day the Intrepid will comeback with another awesome design and better built.

The nostalgia hit hard here. I had a silver 2000 with the dreaded 2.7 as my first car! I was fresh out of high school and just starting college. Put dual exhaust on her & gave me no problems in the 3 years I had her. One day she started overheating all the time and sprung some leaks. Compared to now, I had little auto experience so we sadly had to trade her for a Kia optima. She had 200k on the clock. Turned her in 6 yrs ago and still remember it like yesterday lol Don't see them anymore. Love the reviews man!

I have a dodge intrepid as well with 70k miles I have no complaints about it, a lot of people say is ugly and unreliable ,but for me is beautiful, very reliable and stable during high speed driving, so I really have to disagree with some of the points you are making about the intrepid , because you are reviewing a basic intrepid, find the RT model with the 3.5 HIGH OUTPUT engine and you will change of mind and the intrepid transmission problems from this era were simple to repair and the car in general is simple to work on if you know what are you doing and what are you talking about. Actually I am preparing videos how to work on them but are not ready yet . Further more you can actually upgrade features in the basic model because most of the upgrades were mostly plug and play, and the LH platform is the grandfather of the new LX platform which is used today in the new Chrysler 300. try to make upgrades on features in the new Chrysler 300 and then you tell me another story there is no way unless the car is ready for it and you have to mess with the computer to make feature works. AND I HAVE TO AGREE WITH THE FACT OF WHAT YOU DID SAID AT THE END THIS CAR IS NOSTALGIA ON WHEELS . I am a Chrysler certified mechanic shhh.... lol.

I love my "dirty sweatshirt" car, haha! Your nostalgia for this vehicle directly reflects mine for my 2003 3.5L SXT. It's my first car, and for its age, flaws, and the frequent "rust bucket" comments thrown its way, it's been good to me. Fuel inefficient? Absolutely. Tedious to park? You betcha. Currently in the shop for an intake manifold issue? *Sigh.* Yes... and I'm footing the bill for it. But it's because I really do love that car that I'm willing to help it out. It *is* a time capsule to very different times in American history - in many ways, gentler and simpler times - with its CD slot, long and conspicuous antenna, weak halogen headlights, distinctive "cab forward" body style, and total dearth of any modern instruments and technology. There's no entertainment console or built-in GPS in this thing! I admire its freedom and simplicity. I love that it's still going strong after 21 years on the road (hopefully, if my engine block gets cleaned up). And I love that it is - for the time being - actively defying the extinction that has befallen so many others of its kind. My big, clunky plastic dinosaur. 😊 Even if it dies tomorrow, I will always love my Dodge Intrepid.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to me this 2nd generation of Intrepid not only not ugly, but it is a daringly beautiful design. The weak point to this model is the infamous 2.7 l engine, which was prone to build up of oil sludge, which ultimately caused internal damage. The good thing is that this particular example has only 32 thousand mile, so it is good for another hundred thousand or so. So this car is definitely a time capsule, and a charming one at that.

Thanks for the nostalgia trip. My family rented a red Intrepid just like this on a weeklong trip to Orlando and Cocoa Beach as a kid in 1999, so I feel the same way about these cars as you do. In my head, I associate the song “3AM” by Matchbox Twenty with this car. And of course, the Chrysler “parts bin” interior. My mom had a 2005 Grand Caravan for years and it had the same radio, steering wheel, gauges, and buttons. Chrysler and Dodge had a whole theme of long oval-shaped elements throughout their interiors, and that radio was the centerpiece of the theme.

Intrepid was an aircraft carrier, not a battleship. Intrepid is a word with a definition what was used for the aircraft carrier. Brave, daring, and courageous are synonyms. The word was used to name the car. The name used for the aircraft carrier is merely a coincidence. My 2004 Intrepid has 132K miles. The only reason I keep it is that it's paid for and can be kept running with occasional use of various "Stop Leak" products. When the car was new, the engine sounded like a turbine jet whine. After a few years of that, I had the car in the dealer service station for another issue. The mechanic recognized and informed me that the belt tensioner pulley was making that noise. After correcting that issue, the engine sounded like the internal combustion v-6 that it is. I've always wished I could get that whine back. It wasn't causing any problem.

I am visiting the video again to say that my Intrepid is in my garage with the engine partially disassembled. A month ago it made a distressing noise and died. I have a full time job so the work on the engine is part time and weekend duty. Here is what I have proven so far. The water pump at 133,000 miles is in good condition. There is no unintended movement of the sprocket. The timing chain seems to be in tension. There is zero sludge anywhere. A decade of synthetic oil has done it well. The pistons have carbon buildup on top. I'll address that after I get it rebuilt. The crankshaft bearing caps do not move when I attempt to jiggle them. The car briefly had a low oil condition a year ago, but no evidence of bearing damage has appeared. What else? The coolant system leaked a few years ago and now I am going to replace the radiator, thermostat, radiator cap, and top and bottom radiator hoses. All of those are off the system. My next operation on it will be to flush out all the old coolant before I remove the water pump. Having satisfied myself that the crank bearings are good, I'll put a new gasket on that and button it back up after I remove the water pump. While I've got it disassembled, I'll also replace the oil pump and timing chain assembly, even the DOHC chains. It fairly sucks that I've found no evidence of the terrible noise or the engine stoppage. There is just nothing else to do but replace the likely suspects and see if I get it right. I'll come back in a few months to tell you how my project turns out.

Oh, by the way, if you ever want to remove the thermostat, the way to do it is to first remove the various things before you can remove the alternator, then remove the alternator and remove the alternator bracket. The thermostat becomes accessible.

I read too much. The Dodge Intrepid dates back to before the Chrysler/AMC merger. It is based on the Eagle Premiere that started development with Renault/AMC in 1982. That car was released in 1987 as the 1988 Eagle Premiere. That car was used as the bases for the LH architecture which begat the the Dodge Intrepid.

Well, you may feel that the looks of this Intrepid is ugly, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I currently own and Bought brand new a 2002 Dodge Intrepid SE similar to your test vehicle except for the color, and I couldn't be any happier with it! In the past I have owned a Buick Park Ave. a Lincoln Town Car, a Cadillac Sedan de Ville and in my opinion, my Intrepid has outshined them all!!! It has never given me an ounce of trouble, has never left me stranded on the side of the road and still looks very much like it did when I brought it home from the dealer!!! It has the optional decklid spoiler and also the wood veneer inlays on the dash, console, and door panels which in my opinion, set it off from the others like it! I have LOVED this car from the beginning and will continue to do so until I'm no longer on earth! I've looked at some of the new trash that they are currently selling on the auto market and I wouldn't give up my Intrepid for any of them! They're all JUNK!!! You're entitled to your opinion, that's true, but it isn't mine and never will be!!!!

The ship Intrepid is not a battleship it is an aircraft carrier and the Dodge intrepid shares that they are both are BIG, all-american, and the verb intrepid meaning "brave, being unafraid to go new places" is also fitting for this car . It implies a sense of solidity, safety, bravery and patriotism. And the name Dodge Intrepid comes from the previous design from the mid-90s, so 9/11 2001 had absolutely nothing to do with the name.

I had a 2001 Intrepid SE with the 2.7L engine. Never had a sludge problem. The main issue with the 2.7L engine is that the water pump was located inside the front engine cover so if it started leaking, coolant would start mixing with the engine oil. Mine stated leaking around 91k miles but i caught it right away and no damage was done. Only major issue I had the whole time I owned it. Traded it in with 107k and it ran like a champ. On the interstate keeping it under 70 mph I could get 31 mpg. Also one of the most comfortable cars I've owned. I disagree with the reviewer about the handling. It handled like a compact car. Handled better than many other cars in it's size and price range.

The biggest problem with the 2.7 liter engine in the Intrepids was the internal water pump that almost always ended up leaking some coolant and contaminating the engine oil. You had to always keep checking the oil dipstick for water bubbles that were an indicator of contamination. The other major issue was that the cars were not easy to work on. A lot of mechanics hated working on them. That was what ruined the Intrepid brand. Other than that the cars were great cars and I owned 2 of them both ES models with 3.2 liter engines.

All you had to do was hold it down and keep holding for 5 seconds after it stopped. Stupid Chrysler. And older Hondas (my Accord did basically the same thing).

On one right now. 2004 2.7. The only problem is that it's burning lots of oil and it's stinky. But I don't mind paying for an overhaul just to give this car a new birth.

Funny, to me the only good thing about Chrysler’s LH cars (especially the first gen) was, and still is, the looks😅 The cab never looked very “forward” to me, but the wedge shape somehow seems to accentuate how long, low, and wide the car looks… at least to my eyes.

Wasn't the 2.7 the bad engine to get in this car? If so, then that makes this example even more of a survivor. It's also nice to see another Hot Pursuit 2 enjoyer out there. You can't talk about nostalgia in relation to the Dodge Intrepid without mentioning the promotional General Mills cereal boxes from 2001. Not only did you get a free NASCAR diecast in each box, which simply doesn't happen anymore, but the boxes themselves had a lot of eye candy for a 4 1/2 year old kid who was already into cars and racing to consume. On the back of each box was one of those iconic old Dodge ads typical of the mid-90s through the turn of the millennium displaying their lineup of vehicles in red on a white background. Ironically, I think the Intrepid is my least favorite model out of the seven pictured in this particular ad that adorned the cereal boxes. I remember picking out the Stratus coupe as my favorite when I was young, as well as its predecessor the Avenger in the older ads I would see in old magazines.

You think this car is ugly?!?... well traditionally by definition an opinion cannot be right or wrong... though mine are of course ALWAYS correct.😜 All joking aside, I recommend you take a good look at the K cars, especially the Dodge Dynasty or the Chrysler K based limoseum to help you appreciate what a breath of fresh air these cars were. The styling was inspired by a Lamborghini concept car and it clearly carried some styling cues from the Viper. I will agree the 2.7l is a lazy dog of an engine in the LH cars and it is understandable that given its size and buzzy nature that getting it confused with a I4 is understandable. The 3.3l was a much better base engine for the LH cars from the 1st. Having witnessed these cars come out along with it's competitors, the idea of these cars coming with a I4 would have been a strange concept as both similar sized cars like the Bonneville and smaller cars like the Taurus all came with standard V6 engines from both Ford and GM. The 2.4l I4 would have been very slow in these given the acceleration time for the lighter Stratus was slower than the Intrepid with a 2.7l V6. The 3.5 on the other hand is a completely different experience and makes these cars fun. You should try testing one sometime. I also lament the loss of these wonderful seats. As good as these are, the ones on the LHS and 300M are even better. I appreciate it that you discuss this detail as traditional auto reviewers only care about tons of bolstering, gimmicky things and nothing about comfort.

I just acquired my mom's 2001 intrepid and noticed while driving it, I must be driving the only one in my area. Actually a pretty cool feeling. I do want to buy everything to do a water pump replacement soon. I check the oil a couple times a day so hopefully I will catch any water pump failure soon enough. I really like driving it. So comfortable.

Thing is, in the mid 90s when the first gen Intrepid, 300M, and Concorde were introduced, they were very revolutionary for the time, with cab-forward and all. They were just under-engineered and left no further development dollars for generation two once Mercedes pillaged Chrysler for of all their $$$ in the "merger of equals". To make this review complete, I think there needs to be a touch of history here, rather than just sat Dodge built a lousy product.
