You are a hero of the people, Oscar! My car was leaking coolant and my mechanic told me they couldn't look at it for 3 weeks. I started googling and found your video showing exactly what my car was doing. I have zero mechanical experience or aptitude but with the help of your video I fixed the problem and saved a few hundred dollars. I'm super grateful to you man! For other newbies thinking of attempting this my advice is: follow the steps in the video, and listen to Oscar when he says you need a wobble adaptor to get the housing off, it's impossible without it. Also buy a hose pick if you don't own any, there's no way to unstick the hoses otherwise. Your car may look slightly different (my 06 had a few differences) but the steps were the same and any differences could be resolved with common sense. The job took me about 5 hours with a couple of trips to the auto parts store. Part and tools I had to buy were around $100 total but I had to replace the whole housing since it was broken exactly like the one on the video.

You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. This video was great. I’m so happy that you posted this 4 months ago and not 4 months from now. Totally saved me a lot of money by being able to fix it myself. Few things for others watching. The other engine size has different locations for a few things. So, if you think the car in the video doesn’t look like your engine bay - don’t worry it all works out. After plugging your battery back in - you’ll need to let the cars computer re-learn your engines idle. Let it sit for 15 to get warm, then turn on the interior fan and let it sit for another 10-15. Then it should be good to go.

Did you have your codes pop up on your dash with your initial start after you finished? My dash has both coolant icons (red/blue) showing with a check engine light on, but prior to this I had nothing displayed. And I replaced my water outlet (had a busted gasket) very easily, so I let it relearn the idle (or tried) and then it stalled on me and displayed the power steering icon once it stalled, plus it has a rougher idle.

My friend came over to my house, noticed overheating, and got coolant en route. Got here, poured it in, and it pissed it out. Straight escaped. Nothing in it. I assumed an easy upper radiator hose leak and volunteered to fix it and took her home. Turns out it was the entire housing and gasket. Triple my initial cost repair estimate but still not bad since it's free of charge for labor lol. Thank you for helping me to be a good friend! You ended up helping a mother of 2 save probably a grand with this video!

@oscars-autorepair3236 just leaving this for other people If the security system is going off when you put it all back together, There is a small (rod/button) you can push in to turn it off. It is located close to the bottom left of the driver foot area. You could accidently press it with the left foot if that makes sense. Not knowing about this button added 3 days to this project until I found the right thread with the correct disabling protocol.

I've watched hundreds of car repair videos over the past few years, and this was the best I've seen. Thank you for making such an excellent and informative video!

last time i had to remove the battery carriage was to replace the toasted transmission module & now looks like have to do it again soon for the coolant leak with more parts to remove with a bit of challenge but after watching your video it seems like the job is already 50% done & another 50% is get the affected part replaced. you're awesome & thank you...

I took advantage of having this area cleared out to mount my tcm in a cooler spot. wish I’d done that when I replaced the transmission mount. but I’ve already got 175k on the car though so we’ll see if it keeps it from failing any earlier 😅

Oscar, thank you so much for this video. My daughter's 2011 Mazda 3 was leaking coolant I tracked it down to this same area. I first searched some Mazda forums. Some others had posted the same issue, but there was no answer. I searched Google and found your video. I am not a certified mechanic, but I like to work on my own cars. What I do is watch videos of repairs I need to do and take step by step notes. Then do it myself. I am planning on sharing my notes as a solution to this problem. I will certainly give you the credit and post a link to the videoif I can. I'll be tearing into it tomorrow and then ordering the parts when I find out if the housing is broken or not. Thanks for the video! Had the same part break on my 2010 Mazda 3 2.5L and this was exactly what I needed to fix it and saved me $300. What's weird is my water outlet chipped in the same spot and the gasket was torn up too.

I was able to replace this part without touching the intake. Must remove the battery box. The cable hose clamp pliers and a universal joint socket are essential. Thanks for this video! ps the MT has less parts in the way.

I have same car, same spot! Did you end up just changing gasket or did you eventually have to replace thermostat (specifically the thermostat part under the power steering pump, not the temp sensor in this vid)

Awesome video, awesome side notes, just what was needed for a 2006 mazda3... replaced a gasket, though I think other things will need to be done, but since it's a families members car, they can decide what they will or won't need to do... I think a couple of loose hose connections fixed and a swollen gasket replaced will work in the mean time. Thanks Oscar!

Just pulled this out of my 2010 Mazda 5 the Coolant Water Outlet Flange broke in the exact spots the one in this video. People don't skip the part where he shows the 3 bolts for the battery box like I did, and have to come back to watch that part to find them!

Your very welcome, you will need the following- a niddle nose plier, a good set or torx bits, a 1/4 3inc wabble extension to take out the actual part water gasket housing. And I good set of 3/8 socket set especially the 10mm . I put the size of each tool in the video for my viewers. I hope this helps.

Wow I had a pretty nice comment about your video and it was deleted by KZread , No clue why It actually would have helped other people.. It was a pretty extensive Comment I came back , to update the comment Saying that I actually checked the coolant level and it was low so I just added some distilled water and now it's very stable temperature at 205... But yeah I'll get back to the common in a few hours see if this doesn't get taken down for some weird reason then I'll repost or try to repost the original comment I just need to type everything out again

Hey, I am giving this a try today, first mechanic job ever on my car at age 52. Never even done an oil change! Question 1: My piece broke in exactly the same place. What happens to that piece of plastic floating around in the coolant system??? Question 2: there are two plugs you disconnected on top of a unit that was attached with 4 screws to the water coolant outlet assembly. My car doesn't have that... what is it? Thanks if anyone knows! I haven't been able to figure it out on google Thanks so much for this video, really made tackling the project less intimidating. Gotta get that 19mm deep socket to remove the sensor. Let's see if I can get it back together, or maybe I'll be calling a mobile mechanic. That would still be a win in my book!

You don't have to drain the coolant but just be prepared to clean up alot of coolant spill

I got off work tonight and headed home. it was after midnight and a little chilly so I turned the heater on. noticed immediately that I was getting some coolant fumes through the vent. stopped at the grocery store and popped the hood and saw a leak that looked a lot like coolant coming from who knows where. got home as quickly as I could and started investigating. sure enough, coolant is leaking from the thermostat housing gasket. and of course nothing is open right now for me to get the part I need 😑🤬😩

The water housing and gasket itself from the dealer ship cost just over 200 $

Whats the exact name of that part ad gasket. My buddy called it a water pump lol cuz that right side is where im getting my leak and my heater randomly not working cuz of it but that area it leaks just like that i spent hours searching and this video poped up!

Doing this job right now I got everything apart. I feel like putting everything back together is going to be a challenge

You will be ok, looks super complicated but trust me, everything will be put back in place, just try to organize your self each time you take things apart and set them aside the way you remember you took the off. Let us know how it goes

Just done mine, it was a pain in the ass. Every single hose and star screws.

Hey I changed my water outlet and there's no leaks and everything seems good and I have no leaks but I drove it and it over heated a little bit and I realized I over filled the coolant. Is it being over filled the reason it over heated a little bit

Do u have any tips on how to get coolant back normal? Will there be air in the system?

Great question, once you fill back the car with coolant, turn on the car and turn on the heater on high , this will allow the thermostat to open up and allow the coolant to run thru the engine block , keep the cap off the coolant reservoir to allow any air bubbles to be released, and refill as needed. Hope this helps

This looks exactly like the problem I am having... the service center says it will take 2.5 hours of labor to replace the whole assembly at $155/hour. Sounds like they got some slow mechanics! I know nothing about cars, maybe should give it a try myself...

What causes the gasket to rupture like that? My mechanic replaced the whole unit on my 2013 Mazda 5. It could have only been the gasket that needed to be replaced. Is it likely the whole unit would have failed?

Great question Keith, the rupture can happen for one main reason “wear and tear”. As you saw in this video the whole unit failed as it cracked due to the plastic housing and the hot temperature the engine gets. With time these parts wear out and cause cracks. In this specific case the whole unit crack where the seal is seated and that cause the seal or gasket to slide out from its seating place.

Ur mechanic could have change the unit to fix the issue once and for all. It could have just needed the 10.00 gasket to be replaced but for an extra 60.00 for the whole unit that can give him peace of mind that will help fix the issue would have made sense in this case. Going thur all that work you might as well change the part. I hope this helps

What would that thing with a ‘plug’ on the top immediately to the left of the water outlet be? Coolant is leaking out of that thing on my car. Can’t figure it out for the life of me

MOTHERF*CKER!!! I just had the SAME THING on my Mazda 2011 3i! THank you for this! My mechanic thought it was going to be something simple at first, then showed me EXACTLY what you show here and the same location for the failed plastic which then failed the gasket. These guys are LEGIT who I use and they felt bad as the total labor came to 2 hours work. They honestly thought it was going to be a quick job. If I may, what would you charge for parts and replacement on this? It looks like a bitch or I'd have done it myself.
