Plissetskaya and Jude in this - is amazing pairing of two extraordinary dancers uniquely sensual and elegant , whose art defies age and conventions. Maya is a personal idol - she was that incredible amalgam of refinement, musicality, eroticism and elevated sense of style from the get go. She have had posessed that magic - whatever she touched was transformed and became personal. There are precious few with similar abilities - Sylvie Guillem comes to mind. Maya is at home in this piece - her territory of expressive performance, requiring dancer's taste, tact and intelligence. Jude is a worty partner for her here. This is art.

Yes, yes, it's amazing that Plisetskaya should be able to dance like this at 78 years of age, but what about Charles Jude? Let's hear a round of applause for the main performer of this wonderful piece. He was 50 when he performed this - no spring chicken any more, but this was almost as good as in his earlier performance, also on KZread.

+DieFlabbergast He was fifty in this? WOW. He's spectacular in it. Besides Nijinsky, the best Faun in history for sure.

I think I would put Nureyev ahead of Jude, though.

Charles Jude remains my favorite Faune, hands down. Jude maintains a withheld self-enclosure which seems close in alignment to what remains documented concerning Nijinsky's original performance and choreographic intent. There is a beautiful feral "otherness" about his presentation.

Charles Jude's performance is much more than sensual and erotic, purveying an hypnotic opium trancelike quality. The movements are smoother and more catlike than Nureyev. The music of Debussy entombs the encounter in a translucent bubble.

Jude's performance here is superior to Nureyev's. Some people will disagree but if you compare the two its easy to see. Maya is sensational here for her age.

@@barbj9785 While I've thoroughly enjoyed Nureyev in many things, everything about his Faune performance is exteriorized. To my eye and sensibility, he cheapened the original intent of this ballet. His performance has none of the interiorization that Nijinsky (based on the photographs and descriptions) and Jude (here and in his Paris Opera Ballet performance) bring to the proceedings. The whole-body physicality is completely missing in Nureyev; he does not understand Nijinsky's very specific physicality which is intrinsically married to the choreography Charles Jude most certainly does. It's an immaculately detailed performance. It also manages to be historically responsible without ever becoming moribund. Patrick Dupond who was a supreme Nijinsky-style exponent was probably also an excellent Faune if he ever chanced to perform it

There is a clip on KZread of Nijinsky's original performance in 1910. Parts of the performance are reconstructed from stills, but it is essentially exactly the same. Astonishing. And the music must be the most sensual and erotic ever written.

The whole clip is created from stills. Not just parts. There IS no film of Nijinsky, Daliev made sure of that.

There is NO original footage of Nijinsky dancing. However, there is a sliver of a clip of his standing on a street long after he left the Ballet Russes. What you probably saw are the cleverly morphed and "melded" stills from the ballet which give a near-convincing APPEARANCE of snippets the original choeographed movement. They've been circulating on KZread and the internet for years presenting themselves as actual snippets from the actual historical performance. Fraudulent as they are, they are food for thought concerning how things might originally have appeared.
