2002 Volkswagen Beetle P0414 FIXED - Secondary Air Injection Pump Replacement - VW Beetle 1.8 Turbo
In todays video we are back at working on the 2002 Beetle with the 1.8 Turbo. So far we have done an alternator, pads and rotors all the way around, and now troubleshooting this code. I will walk you through how I did the job and what worked for me. There are likely several ways to replace the part. I strongly suggest you do whatever works best for you. We bought the part off amazon and didn't have any fitment issues.
Be sure to check the hoses like I did in the video first because if they are broken or not connected this code can be thrown as well.

2007 Beetle convert. I was told the pump only operates on cold start to aid in heating the cat. P2279 code indicated no air to the exhaust i.e air pump not operating and/or leak in the hose/pipe. Found and fixed a bad o-ring. Jumpered pump to 12 V source and it runs. Anybody know what activates the air pump on startup?

You are correct: it only is in use for the first 30-90sec of cold starts. Dead weight after that. If you live in a state that either has ditched emissions like me, or doesn’t use “readiness” in the emissions test like a handful… then I’d just delete the thing and save the space and weight. Makes it easier to work on other stuff when you need to. I’ve simplified my vacuum systems and beefed up the coolant systems with metal flanges on my mk4s to make then more reliable and easy to work on.

We recently four months back put $1100 into our Volkswagen beetle. We had the oil filter housing replaced the manifold gasket set and I’m wondering now that the code has come up for this particular secondary air injection system if that is in the same area is all that work that was just done a few months ago?

There are some things in that general area that if left unhooked or hoses are cracked could throw that code . May be worth inspecting the hoses as the plastic over time tends to crack. If it’s cracked hoses I wouldn’t fault the shop . Even an honest person like myself gets into jobs and sometimes things are just waiting to break :/

after 20 years these hoses crack by looking at them. The pump itself is very prone to leaking as well. I’ve deleted all of mine and haven’t looked back…

@@Heav4n honestly not difficult if you know your way around a wrench. It makes sense to delete the SAI, n249, vac reservoir, and replace all the coolant flanges/temp sensor/gasket all at once if you are gonna do it. Might as well flush the coolant system with clean water a couple times when you fill up too.

I think you did it the hard way. Take bumper cover and fenders off. Bring radiator into service position. Unscrew the three bolts holding the the pump bracket from above the intake manifold. Comes right out. No fluid loss. And the three rubber "boots" have 6m nuts. It is not supposed to be "FLOATING". Get a Bentley or Haynes repair manuals

The EASY way is to take off the bumper cover and both fenders?!
some or most of the clips are leveler actioned with a flat head screwdriver their horrible

They never work properly you spin and they don’t pop up. It’s 2022 and cars are still built with crap clips
