Socket Wrench with extension
5/16" or 8mm socket
Dorman Resistor - Part # 973-026 amzn.to/2M0qRJ7

2001 Dakota here. five minutes. most of the time was spent contorting to get a view from the foot well. There are three screws (hex heads). Two cannot be seen unless you peer straight up at the location, but that might not be physically possible for a dood over 5'6". To gain access to one of the screws requires the removal of the screw that holds a black, hard plastic hose. Once that screw is removed, you can move the hard plastic hose just enough to access the screw attaching the resistor to the truck. this is a $10 fix. I completely thought I was in for a new blower. Thank you @Scouser Tech for posting. I guess, I'll never walk alone.

I went through 3 of these resistors on my 2001 Dakota. The problem is the 5-pin connector is not rated for the amp load on the highest and 2nd highest fan speed settings. Heat and oxidation would build up to the point the connector would melt and fuse to the resistor. So even with a new resistor block and connector it will just happen again. I finally solved it by soldering the wires directly to the pins on the resistor block. You have to carefully cut away part of the shroud to get good access to solder. Once done, fill the whole cavity with silicone sealer or epoxy as a potting compound. Mine has been working fine for four years now. Also, you can get new resistor block, connector with wires, and even new fan/motor assembly for very little $ on Amazon. Don't pay dealership prices.

Hey everyone, I had issues with my 2004 Dakota blowing the resistors and the issue ended up being the wiring harness/connector. I went through a couple resistors so looking into it more the connector and almost 1 1/2 of of wire was corroded. I checked with my local parts supplier and they wanted almost 100 just for the connector! Reading this was a design flaw and people actually started using 2008 improved connector, I bought one more resistor, cut off the connector, stripped the wires, and soldered the clean wires to the resistor itself. I have not had an issues since. Carefully read your trucks schematic for wiring, or simply plug the resistor in and mark the colours of the wires on the resistor to ensure proper polarity. So before you replace switches, blower motors, check these resistors which is the cheapest part (4.99 CAD) BEFORE going to your mechanic and paying 85 -90 for them to misdiagnose like many others, causing a headache for many dakota owners. Hope this helps someone

My question is, I have Dodge Durango 2002 and my resistor keeps going out. Do you know where I can get the entire kit from with wires? I had to replace the resistor last month and this month it has gone out again. I looked on line it only has the kits for the green wires and the original ones had multi color wires. Thank you.

Question, I switched out the blower motor and still nothing I know it’s not the relay, can the resistor not turn any air on at all?

I'm about to change this for the second time on my Dakota. I think running it full blast all the time is too much or something. On mine one of the pins is burned black, melted plastic and everything. On the resister and the harness that it clicks into. Really frustrating.

It isn't the resister but the harness, you can look into eBay to get a good deal on the harness. There will be cutting and fixing... I have the exact same problem and the connector on the harness is the issue.

Will the resistor also fix the direction selector I'm only getting air at the dash!

SAXON7147 could be your blower motor or the blower door is malfunctioning. Also as I’ve mentioned just recently in another post there is a vent tube that is known for Causing these issues. Have you recently had your dash off for any work?

No dash removal for any work. Power and speed of the blower work but the direction air control selector doesn't care what you select air only comes out of the windshield vent. And the resistor you replaced! I've not found it's location must be somewhere totally different on my truck! Update found the answer online! I sure hope I can get it done withoutthe dash off way! www.justanswer.com/dodge/2i589-replace-blower-resistor-1997-dodge-dakota.html

I installed a new resister three or four years ago and it just went bad again (blower only working on high). Someone mentioned it could be the wiring harness. Is that an easy install for a non-mechanical person?

I have a similar problem with my 02' Durango except my heater does not turn on at all. My rear blower works no problem but my front heater does not work and its getting cold in NJ. Would the resistor still be the issue or something else. I can feel heat coming from the vents while i drive which helps a little but the blower does not seem to re be running at all. Thanks for your time friend

Sounds like your blower motor has gone on the front. Can be fixed pretty easy. I don't have vehicle anymore so cant make a video but some good ones out there. As for the resistor do your speeds work on the working rear blower?

your risister to the blower motor is coroded and not enough power goes thru the rust so your wires get hot n melt the plastic cause less power n. the smell of something burning causing damage to the plug in part from the harness, only to replace that part n clip in a new one or get one from the junk yard i hope this will help my name is woo aka julio, brother hoo, jack of all trades.

curtis darby does the heat setting do same thing? Have you checked your cabin air filter as you could have blockage? Could also be the blower motor possibly?

Jonathan Petrosky Do any of your speeds work or are they all out? As for some items to check. Fuses? Resistor could have blown or could be loose. Take down those bolts and check it out. Cheap part to replace or at least have as spare. Your blower motor could be out and needing to be replaced. Let me know how it goes.

Yours is a 3rd Generation but repair should be similar. Not much changed so definitely give it a go. I have not repaired a 3rd gen but all should be similar. Check online for correct part number.
