In this video I will change the fuel filter on the 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins 5.9l turbo diesel. I will be using a dedicated shallow socket that was designed for this project and makes it much easier. The job is not hard. I will also show you how to prime the filter canister and what happens when you don't prime it enough.

    I drain my housing first, then do everything you did. And when re-inatalling the cap, you should lube the O-Ring with a tiny amount of clean diesel fuel.

    I think I will just fill the canister with clean fuel before I put my filter on, it works perfectly on my filters on my diesels in my boat. I like your W123!

    If you fill up the canister with clean fuel, will the pump still push fuel into the canister and overfill?

    Hello, nice video. I would like to ask you if when you installed your FASS DDRP lift pump, did you also install the tiny in-line fuel filter that came with it that goes just before a lift pump?

    There's a little valve on a 2000 2001 on the pump itself that bleeds out any water be careful not to break it though I'm not sure about the 2001 but on a 2000 there is so I open up that little valve and drain out any water it's not much when I remove the old fuel filter I personally let the fuel drain and slowly remove the fuel filter I haven't used the sucked out method with the tube I just look inside and see if it's clean enough with no sediment or if you do clean it out with the suction tube I would advise putting fuel back in the canister and then submerged slowly insert the new fuel filter attached to the cap of course very slowly and do the no cross threading method moving the cat back and forth until it threads correctly tighten her down then I turn the key on kick it once but don't start it wait a minute or so then start her up you shouldn't have any issues

    I have a 2001 Cummins the two are hard to differentiate I can't get the fuel to come out of the tank the pump in the tank makes no sound and I can't find any wires

    Shouldnt you drain the diesel first on? Theres a valve at the bottom of the filter housing. I was told there can be too much pressure in the housing and can shoot out diesel everywhere.

    First, the filter housing needs to be drained, THEN take out your filter, THEN refill the filter housing about halfway with diesel and put back your new filter and cap on. Prime the truck first about 5 times. You do this by turning on the truck (BUT DONT CRANK), let the bells and alarm sound and count for 20 seconds. Turn it off and repeat it 5 more times, on the 6th time it should turn on. If it doesn't, it's okay, it just needs to get more primed. This is how mine was, and it's how I do things from now on.

I did not like how the guy put the new filter in a "dry" filter housing, & I was wondering if a feller can fill the housing with new, clean, diesel fuel & then drop in the new paper filter! And you have answered my question on this part of the subject, so thankyou!!! I need to do this to my 2001 dodge as well. Where does a guy find a "fuel extractor" like what he was using in the video??? Also, when installing the O-ring, should a guy lube it up with a petroleum jelly type product such as vasoline???

    @@truckerray7533 There should be a drain valve under the filter housing where you can fit a 5/8 hose to drain. As far as o ring installation, just take the old one out and install new one

    @RRMetalBuilds Well, changed out the old fuel filter with a new one. I was able to get the old fuel out of the filter housing with some shop rags until the bottom of the housing was dry & cleaned of debris. attached the new clean filter onto the filter lid al9ng with the new O-ring rubbed in oil, refilled the filter housing with new, clean fuel with an oil quart bottle, & installed the filter & lid down into the housing & tightened up the fuel filter lid nice & snug. started up the Dogde & let it run in idle for several moments, then took it for a drive around an 8 mile block, came back home to the shop & rechecked for fuel leaks & a nice snug fit of the lid to the filter housing. Didnt have to do no key cycle multiple times to get the pump going to re-fill the housing. All was fine & dandy as candy with still no issues!!!!
