If you thought the 4.7 sucks you likley have never driven one. they are truly a small displacement beast. Particularly in a standard cab Dakota.

205k on mine, still runs good. Trying to hunt a vaccume leak right now. Just took the throttle body off and cleaned it out and need to get a pcv valve now. Probably got a failing head gasket too along with a heater core fml

@x99j I have just over 221,000 on the odometer. It's getting there, and 300,000 will be a great mile stone! Thanks for the info on the copper plugs, my next plug change will be with the champions. Thanks for the comment Mike, have a good weekend!

Sorry for the delay, yes I'm running a 4.7, and with just the K&N replacement filter I gained 3 MPG: now running 17.9 MPG. I'm also getting a Superchips tuner, hope it works as advertised. Thanks again for the great video

Thank you for the kind words, I try to give as much as I can when making these videos, on some videos I even holler at my professional technician friends and get their advice, just to make sure I am giving the right information. As far as the 12 MPG, you should not have any problems getting 14-16 in the city and 20-22 on the highway. Would you like me to make a video on some things to check/clean on the Dakota to help the MPG? Thanks again for watching and for the comment!

Nice video Tex! Clearing away the debris around the spark plug boot with an air hose nozzle is the real trick. However, the Spec sticker under the hood states the proper spark plug gap is .040 for the 4.7L. All of the replacement brands I have used thus far (Autolite, NGK, Champs, ect.) come pre-gapped at .040. I double check them with a flat feeler gauge instead of the disc type for better accuracy. By shopping around I find a parts store with a rebate or sale on the longer lasting platinums.

I got it at 140k and I know I havnt replaced them lol but im going with champion I think or maybe NGK depending on prices. I took the front driver plug out and that mofo was way out of spec my gap gauge coudnt even measure it, it was so far off

i have a liberty with a 3.7L (same design as 4.7L) and i only get 20,000 miles (mostly city) out of the copper plugs before they are toast and idle quality suffers. how many miles are now on the dakota now? i am waiting to see the big 300,000 miles! mike

  • @compactc9

If you use too high performance of plugs with too hot of a spark it could damage these engines too. I'd think any copper core plug would be OK, but the Champion brand I think is what Chrysler sells under the Mopar replacements name.

the best way to get better mpg out of the 4.7 is basic maintenance oil plugs etc and use 93 octane it cost a little more but i am seeing 3 to 4 mpg better than the 87 octane mine is a 2004 dakota with the 4.7 and you don't need expensive plugs ether i buy the $1.99 champions and it runs just as good if not better that the expensive ones

I think i found my dakota guy. I’m in desperate need of help with my 2001 dodge dakota 4x4 quad cab, I pulled a motor and trans out of a 1999 4x4 extended cab and put it in a a 2001 quad cab everything was great and just needed one light to go out in order to pass smog. It was the “just drive it and it will go away light on one of those 900.00 snap on scanners. Then it locked in 4x4 hi i removed the drive shaft and it drives free but but stalls out for no reason for some reason ( it randomly shut down) i tried bleeding the bleeder plug reved it a bit and lost a bit of coolant it, so i added a bunch of water . it never over heated but now when i put it in gear it stalls, it idles great in neutral and park but as soon as it touches a gear it stalls (auto trans) i need help, 4x4 is still an issue im sure but i need it running and smuggled before i deal with the 4x4. It there a way to test function on all the different brains on this thing, ie. ive got about 3500.00 invested in this thing both trucks had the same engine and trans, the ones that came out of the 99 are jasper rebuilds with less then 10000 miles on them

  • @robertboydston3787

    10 жыл бұрын

Well, first off, the 5.9 is a piece of crap. The difference in horsepower and cost of the 5.9 over the 4.7 is far from worth spending extra money, or in my case...I didn't buy this truck new it's 2003 and I bought it in 2006, so I took what it had, which has served me very well. The new trucks are a different story....the 4.7, which is a great engine is old technology now.
