    What makes this so unique is that this technique uses something that we DON'T normally want to see in a picture: light streaks. If we take a picture in a low-light scene (say, a street at night), we need to keep the camera absolutely still to keep light from moving over the film/sensor. Here, though, what we do is purposely shape the light (the slit, and sometimes for other effects, outlined cutouts like the acetate printouts) and move the camera to create those streaks.

    The sets were so fabulous that they were a powerful and affecting part of the film. The pod bay, The command area on Discovery with all that crazy padding, Even the fabrics chosen for the Aries 1b seats, the pilot's display and clothing on the Pan Am ship, obviously the centrifuge, but even that door to Hal's brain had such a sense of authenticity to it that it just messes with your head. "Welcome to voiceprint identification." Another thing I think about, is short films. Animated, or not, short films compress a lot of ideas and power into them, and most are experimental in their style of presentation. Mysterious endings, quantum leaps at the end....In one way, Kubrick made a 2 hour and 29 minute short film.

    A guy who has a movie-themed channel on KZread built a slit-scan machine out of Lego to demonstrate how the whole mechanical monstrosity worked -it took forever to do a short sequence. His conclusion was that they didn't do it that way because it was a better method than CGI -they did it that way because CGI didn't exist back then and if it had existed they would have used that over using that machine that was just a pain get some usable footage out of it.

    There are bumps in the walls of the tunnel as the floor/rails they were pulling the camera along obviously wasn't level. For those interested, the technique was also used on the ABC Movie of the Week intro, BBC's Doctor Who opening (1973), Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979 - Trumbull), BBC's Top Of The Pops opening (c.1983), Brainstorm (1983 - Trumbull again).

    I thought this was going to be interesting, in depth technical dive. Berry is just another clueless knob. Wow, dressing up in a spacesuit costume and reacting like Bowman with the facial expressions, while ASZ plays on the soundtrack. Brilliant. Katharina deserved so much better. I feel embarrassed for her.

    I'm not sure what part of the world you're in Steve, but this piece was made by and for 'The One Show' which is an early evening entertainment/magazine show on BBC1 aimed at a general audience. Bearing that in mind, perhaps your criticism might be considered a bit harsh.

    To recreate the stargate you would have to do it analog......sorry CGI.

  • @HowardBerry

    @HowardBerry

    2 жыл бұрын

    It was analogue. A stills camera taking photographs (yes, digital photos, but aside from that it was an analogue process) captured the image which was on a long exposure with a rear light source. The only digital work done was to mirror the output on a computer to make the other side of the frame.
