「カプコンパートナーシッププロジェクト」のひとつとして登場した弾幕系横スクロールシューティング。プレイヤーは2種類の戦闘機と3種類の「ガンフライヤー」から選択することができる。ボタン操作により戦闘機がメインとなりガンフライヤーが援護攻撃を行う機動性重視の「ファイターモード」と、スピードは落ちるもののガンフライヤーが全方向の敵をロックオンし攻撃を行う「ガンナーモード」が登場。また敵の爆発に敵弾を巻き込むことで得点アイテム「ジュエルリング」に変化、さらに「ジュエリング・トラクター効果」により、出現した大量の宝石もモードを切り替えることで自動で全てを回収することができ、ボム性能が変化するほか、ハイスコア狙いにおいても大きな役目を負っている。美しい背景に映える敵弾や、自機が近づくと自動的にフレームアウトするスコア表示システムによりシューティングゲームに必要な快適さと、独自のテイストを持つ作品を作り出してきたケイブらしいものである。余談だがキャラクターの組み合わせと2人の関係度によって変化するマルチエンディング方式を採用している。

In a time when the industrialization of the world had just begun, various inventions appeared and changed the life of the peaceful kingdom. One of them was a propeller that evolved from pure wind generation by using the created electricity to re-rotate it. It was called 'The Professional Gear', or just 'Progear'. This invention was the key to conquer the great wide open sky. Another discovery made the ancient dream of the immortal body come true. But it was affordable only by some wealthy elderly. They formed a new council called 'the Motorouin' and declared the current government as a corruptive and greedy establishment and that they want to correct it by a new educational system, in order to create a new race of man. So they built a military force to realize the first step of their plan, which was the takeover of the kingdom. The government decided to stop the aggression by putting it's own army in motion. It was a dreadful battle with many victims. But it was won by the Motorouin. This battle is mentioned in the books of history as 'The Punishment of the Sages'.
A group of young pilots, actually children whose families were killed in that war, finally decided to fight back. They secretly developed a new powerful weapon which adults were not able to use. They called it 'Gun Flyer' and installed it in all of their planes. The Storm of Progear was about to begin!

    I've finally played thanks to Capcom Arcade Stadium and the pressure you feel when the screen is full of bullets is crazy lol. It's hard but it's addictive as you want to be able to master the game.

    +William Bunch Actually, there's plenty of room for error, if you're in the first loop, and are disinterested in the second. And in this game, all the first loop requires is a one credit run. Which doesn't even remotely prepare you for the second loop, where revival is shut off and so death becomes quite costly. Also, suicide bullets. Wouldn't be a Cave game without them.

    Well, CAVE started relatively early using pre-rendered 3D models as references for their sprite work. It only gets more obvious in their later titles where you can really tell that pre-rendered stuff was the base.

    Cave games are hard. I played them on emulators. But with a good arcade stick and no input lag it’s much easier

    What’s funny is, for as long as this game has been around, I just heard about it late last year and just played it for the first time early this year. Better late than never because this is an amazing game! One thing I can not understand is why the PlayStation and Xbox systems respectively never decided on porting some of these great arcade titles to home consoles. Games like this (progear), dolphin blue, sega’s beat em up game about the zombie apocalypse (can’t remember the name right now, however it plays similar to die hard arcade), sequels to Guardian Heroes, the capcom d&d games and others never received the home treatment either during their time or afterward. Many games like Guardian heroes and the d&d games would have had amazing sequels if the teams and console manufacturers had invested in those properties. I don’t know why they blow money on big budget flops but games that would sell amazingly and cost little money to produce, get overlooked. Before the ps4/Xbox streets of rage game was released, it took 20+ years to get it out of development hell and then they made it and it not only sold but was up for game of the year in its category! Why is this SO hard for companies to understand? The main consumer group and purchasing power comes from the late gen Xer’s and early millennials so why would you NOT tap into that nostalgia and make that money? The best sellers of original games on PlayStation Network are the 2d old school based properties from independent companies who have small operations budgets in comparison with a capcom or blizzard. This always baffles and stuns me whenever I think about it…

    ラスボス倒したスコアで1UPするから2周目に備えて残機潰してボム補充、ではないかと。

    A very great game! And the last Shmup game from Capcom. Before they turned into Crapcom, and focused entirely on street fighter and megaman. (I get megaman and Street fighter was their main heart that keeps the company alive. But their odd games of the 80s', and 90's were some of the more fun games as well.)

    For you, maybe. I don't really see a link on why they become crapcom simply by publishing a game from a different company that's using their arcade system board.

    @@zerotheero Maybe so, maybe not. But Capcom did went downhill from the 21st Century since. (2010's, on-wards especially.). Until the latest years. With their Resident evil Bio-hazard/7. Their good Monster hunter game, and their Decent new megaman. They still got a lot of picking up to do. Redemption are being made. As at least, Capcom is way better than Konami so far. I can only expect Capcom to become a bigger crapcom. But do hope and pray, they stay on the right direction to get close to their old-former days of great times. But only time will tell if they can listen to some of their fans. (A company can do what they want to do. But listening to their fans, will help most of the time.)

    Would have been a nomiss if the player didn't get cocky and greedy but then that is what separates the good from the great.
