    I checked all the comments, I do not believe anyone else has mentioned this. I did the same swap in my 2000 xj, the 3rd brake light bulb is the same 194 bulb as the side marker lights, for those looking to swap that bulb as well. Another thing, in 2022 Sylvania still sells those bulbs, but now in a different style optimized for reflectors, with no forward facing diodes. This is fine for those who have also swapped to clear housings like the ones shown in this video, or when running at night, but daytime they are not bright enough and cannot be seen well from an angle that isn't head on. I personally wouldn't consider them safe for road use. I have switched to cheapo Yorkim LEDs that are working fine so far. Note this is not a problem for reverse lights, and the new style Sylvanias act like a second set of low beams at night.

    Quick note for the rear lights: You definitely should get the color bulb that matches the color of the lens. The reason for this is regular LED bulbs emit more blue light than anything, whereas a standard bulb obviously emits white light that can be filtered. The filtering effect of LED bulbs is usually less noticeable, so just play it safe and get the amber and red variants.

    ScratchFish cool, thanks for that. The other thing I was thinking was if you crack your lens or break it out on a tree or a rock etc. you'll still have the right color coming off of the reflector on your way home.

    The XJ has gotten to the point where people are using painters tape to keep from scratching the paint when replacing a blinker bulb. Both awesome and sad. As bad as the wiring in these things are it's a testament to how well built the motor and drive train are. Hands down favorite.

    Not adequate would be more of the correct answer as is with the headlight harness upgrade to get the correct or adequate power necessary with these older vehicles. Which is exactly what I’m waiting for today so I can replace/upgrade and get much higher light output than stock which is horrible. Half the time I wonder if my lights are even on at night 😂.

    Thank you, you can add in-line mini fuse holders with diodes to prevent back feeding. I assume this will solve the problem but I haven’t tried it myself. You may need to slightly trim the edge of the diode to make it fit in the holder. Also diodes are like a one way street for electricity so make sure they’re installed facing the right way. www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/littelfuse-4149/lighting---electrical-16777/fuses-16615/fuse-blocks--universal--18449/b381070c3b6b/littelfuse-1-amp-mini-diode/02400113xp/4414229 Littelfuse FHM2BP MINI In-Line Fuseholder with Protective Cap - Pack of 1 www.amazon.com/dp/B000COA31K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_rBHbEbAXT990N

    I tried to install LED bulbs in the rear. For whatever reason, with the brakes applied the turn signals will illuminate just barely - not enough to see in the daytime but clearly visible at night. I need to put a multimeter on it to check, but I am almost sure I have residual voltage on the turn signal circuit with the brakes applied (like 3v-5v). Did you have any issues with that? I used the Sylvania Zevo 3156 LED's in the rear and had stock incandescent bulbs up front. I might need to look into those one-way diodes to prevent backfeed or voltage bleed Novita electronic flasher

    I don't know if you decided to upgrade your headlight or not. (I'm assuming it's the headlight) but I upgraded every exterior lightning to leds and when I put the signal light during the daytime (without headlights on) the side marker turns on like normal. However when it's nighttime and I have the headlight on; the side marker will not light up?? Don't know if you have the problem

  • @kevefox

    @kevefox

    7 жыл бұрын

    AmazinglyAstonish I did upgrade to Hella H4 headlights. LED headlights are no good in the snow as they don't produce enough heat to melt off snow during a storm. Trucklite makes a round LED headlight that has a heater grid but nothing in the square variety yet. I would suspect your ground as the culprit. If the headlight uses the same ground then it is probably backfeeding and turning the neg lead on your signal to pos.

    Dallas Baer , I haven't had any issues with it, there is an adjustment to adjust the level of the swing and how tight the striker is. Definitely worth the price but if you are running a gas tank skid plate you need to do some modifications with a cut off wheel to the mount. Pretty easy though. I really like how easy it is to release the tire swing with one finger to open rear access with your hands full.

    Great video. I just did this even removed the trailer harness. With the engine off everything works great. Turn the engine on and everything works but the cluster arrow indicators are very dim and the relay makes a buzz noise when hazard and turn signals are going like I left the lights on a leaving the veh. Any thoughts. Verified it's the relay making the noise. Bad relay?

  • @kevefox

    @kevefox

    5 жыл бұрын

    I wonder if it has something to do with the hazard light switch. This would have power regardless of ignition position and would also activate the cluster indicators. Try messing with the hazard switch and see if there is any change. A relay powering on by a slight amount of power will energize long enough to click and then expend that power and turn back off rapidly making a buzzing noise. Similar to daytime running lights a resistor may be needed somewhere in your system to even out a pulse. This makes me wonder if there is a bad ground somewhere or if you have power bleeding into the system from a source when the engine is running? Possibly from the tachometer?

    @@kevefox I was wondering about the switch too. It works fine as well when the engine is off. Turn it on and hazard and turn signals give me buzz and dim indicators. Now all the lights work on the out side like the are supposed to and beside being dim and the noise they work as well. Going to hook up a meter and see if voltage input from the pdc changes with the engine on and also run temo ground to if that changes anything. Not sure if it matters but the left front side marker lamp on ly work when the turn signal is activated running light does not, but this was an issue before I swapped to LEDs. @@kevefox so just a small update, didn't get to far as my meter was dead. Used a test and checked the back of the relay connector. B+ and run power show bright as do the the hazard and turn signal pins . Engine on and switch and hazard dim . I also noticed the outside bulbs are also dim . I was mistaken. Think your right as I may have a bad ground, i did try to ground it the connector but no change but may need to be the main ground for that circuit. Btw swapped in a bulb to see if any change. Unfortunately nothing but did show me how weak it was with engine running. Thanks and I'll update once i find a fix

  • @kevefox

    @kevefox

    6 жыл бұрын

    Arkvoodle38 I would imagine it has something to do with the internal diode in the bulb. When you added the second bulb It somehow was backfeeding. I bet if you isolate the ground individually on each bulb socket they will work properly. Just a thought though.

    thnx, but cld say it more simply? im just getting started with electronics. not sure what "isolate the ground individually" means

  • @kevefox

    @kevefox

    6 жыл бұрын

    Arkvoodle38 absolutely, I’m on the road so it takes a while to get back to you. What I mean by isolate the ground is the sockets that you put the bulb into Will have three wires going into them when will be positive for the Running light One will be positive for the turn signal and the third will be a ground wire. The ground wire (negative-) eventually makes it back just to a metal surface on your vehicle. Call where the power goes through the bulbs varies on vehicles. Sometimes positive wire will go into a bulb and then come back out on the negative side but then feed back into the positive on the next bulb and the fourth wire coming out will go to ground. If you eliminate or isolate this daisychain effect by singling out that negative wire connecting it directly to ground or a bare metal surface you may eliminate The backfeeding or positive power coming in from the wrong direction causing your issue. I would also recommend that you contact the Bulb supplier And see if they have any tips for your particular application. There may be a different version of the product or a modification that they know about.

    Quick question for you.. I did a similar swap on my 2000 XJ and put all LED bulbs on my front and rear turn signals and swapped out my flasher relay with an LED one from superbrightleds.com that didn't have a brand name. When my headlights or parking lights are on my dash will indicate that the turn signals are on with the green arrows lit about 50% brightness and when the signals are on they will flash from 50% brightness to 100%. Just wondering if your flasher does the same or if mine is just cheap and I should replace it? It also makes my stereo dim down and brighten back up as it thinks the headlights are turning on and off same thing with the overhead console display and my odometer. Sorry for the long response it's just kind of hard to explain without pictures or video of what's happening.

  • @kevefox

    @kevefox

    6 жыл бұрын

    Nick Thompson it sounds like power is bleeding from the marker or running light side of the bulb to the turn signal side and vice versa back feeding into your signal indicators and also triggering your radio to dim. Try replacing the front LEDs with Sylvania and see if the back feeding goes away. The rear shouldn’t have an effect on the lights or indicators as they’re isolated from each other back there. And yes, definitely replace the flasher with an electronic one. Let me know what happens.

    Godless Heathen I got it at O'Reilly auto parts. I'm not sure that it will work on a 96 but it might since It has the new electronics on the motor. (Last year of the old body style) Either way, O'Reilly has lots of them different sizes etc.

    Nice video. Some low life scumbag stole my side marker lamps off my 99 cherokee. They also cut the bulb and whatever terminal connects the bulb to the wires. Do you have any idea what part I need to install new bulbs? Basically, I just have a bare wire sticking out, so I would need to solder whatever piece attaches the bulb to the wire.

    It looks there are threaded plastic pieces that sit behind the maker lens which actually hold the screws between the lens and the vehicle frame. They also took those - I'm not even sure that I'm going to be able to find those pieces.

    Joshua Smith Napa will probably have the plastic pieces on the rack and as far as the wiring sockets go those are also sold at most parts stores for a 194 bulb. Also hit up www.timbukthree4wd.com. They'll be able to hook you up with everything with one phone call.
