I have the exact model. I bought it brand new in the fall of 99. It still runs like a top.

My dad bought the same exact four wheeler brand new in 99 and it was by far the best machine I’ve ever seen, so reliable and it never met a hill it couldn’t climb

I have a 2002. I installed a high performanace cdi, coil and a new Mikuni carb and i was shocked that it will outrun my buddy's 2020 Sportsman 850 Highlifter. Acceleration and top speed. Unreal power to be a 500.

@Layman Gallagher I would put in like 2002 Polaris magnum cdi. Or 2002 Polaris Magnum mikuni carburetor.

How fast did it go?

It's a good 4-wheeler but I had to drill a hole in the plastic paneling to get at the oil stick/oil filler hole. It's in the most absurd, inaccessible location.

Sportsman usually has a 570 cc HO or 450 cc engine despite the name

The sportsman 500 has independent rear suspension.

polaris quit making the sportsman 500 around 2010 and switched to the 570. the sportsman models are different from the magnums because the magnums have rear suspension like a honda and the sportsman has IRS (independent rear suspension)

@@Adventure_Ash the older sportsmans before 2014 did have the same motor in them as the magnum 500 and the trailboss and xplorer 500 but the magnum has a solid rear axle like a honda and the trailboos and xplorer 500 are chain driven. in 2014 polaris took the 570cc motor out of the rzr and put it in the sportsman and called it the sportsman 570 so theres never been a mix up on the name/size motor.

no theyre better then a honda rancher or foreman or rubicon ive owned all of the said models and love the sportsmans and scrambler 850 ive owned much more
