Scrapping cars that don’t have much wrong with them is a real pet peeve of mine. We live in a world obsessed with reduce and re-use but so many people seem happy to scrap a car for the want of a bit of elbow grease…it baffles me! As far as this Focus is concerned, rest assured, she will coming back better than ever once I’m finished!

@@JohnnyGetsCash "Scrapping cars that don’t have much wrong with them is a real pet peeve of mine." - I agree. People cite the cost of fixing it not worth it, so they (often) buy a new car on the never-never* and/or lose shed loads of cash in depreciation. *installments/loan/hire-purchase for the uninitiated !

@@johnsshed2453 Absolutely, someone down the road has a metallic red one and it looks so dated. Too much black plastic, especially that rear bumper step that looks like it belongs on a Sprinter. The facelift was better, especially as a rally car or in RS form.

Try fitting a sound insulator on the underside of the bonnet from a pre-facelift one, you'd be surprised how much quieter the engine suddenly sounds (not noisy by any means, but Ford cheaped out on small luxuries like this when releasing the facelift). I have a 2003 Focus MP3 which I have had from new. It gave up the ghost in 2015 with just 70k on the clock. I had lots of issues with it over the years but finally an ECU fault killed it. It would start first time from cold but once started, if I stalled it or turned it off, it would not restart until exactly one hour or more had passed. 59 minutes would not restart it and the countdown would start again. Had to be the ECU. Worst fault was an intermittent gauge reading which also reduced power and fluctuated the volume on the MP3 player. Turned out it was a recall on 2003 year Ford Focus / Audi TT / Volvo S70. Then the heater blower would only blow fast, a cheap fix with a new resistor pack. Electric windows would also intermittently fail. I never did find the problem. I waxoyled it every year but it still went rotten. Been offered £350 for scrap but I'll be ripping some bits off it first.

I had a 52 plate MK 1 Focus, bloody good reliable car. The engine management light came on at around 120k miles. (I don't know what was wrong, I traded it in). The bodywork, and mechanics apart from whatever wss causing engine management light to be on, was in great condition. I traded it in for a MK 2 1.6 tdci, another solid Focus! I kept that for about 18 months, and traded it in for 13 plate MK 3 1.6 tdci, which I've owned from new. I do all basic maintenance, and had a new timing kit fitted at around 100k miles. Apart from tyres another front brakes, regular servicing is all it's needed. Just replaced two abs sensors on the rear, I did that myself, so saved a few quid there.

Those were great and potentially long-lived cars, with one Achilles' heel, at least here in North America: rust in the sills (rocker panels). For more than 10 years, Ford accidentally (?) sealed up the drains when assembling the sills, guaranteeing they would rust out in as little as 4-5 years. I wonder if Euro cars were built properly?
