ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

The right channel is not working properly, so my right headphone bud sounds find but seems like some recording issue or mixing issue or something (the clips that aren't you talking are fine) - if possible, perhaps make the sound mono? It's listenable for me but not ideal like this 🙃

Marissa, my mom had a stroke and could not swallow. She choose not to get a feeding tube. She passed away in 14 days. Because she died on a Sunday, I found your channel and became a minimalist. Because of your channel I was able to let go of her things and mine and get over the grief of her passing. So Thanks.

When I look at old photos of myself as a child, I used to think about all the bad things others did to me and how little the younger me knew about what was going to happen. But this is the first time I think about how badly I've treated myself over the years and still do. Thank you.

#16 brought back some hard memories for me. After being married for only two years at the age of 30, I took a cerebellum stroke and lost my ability to swallow. I was on a feeding tube for two months and had to take several swallowing tests before I was finally allowed to eat certain food. It took many more months before I was allowed to eat lettuce. I remember feeling so excited when I was finally told I could eat a salad with lots of dressing on it. I love how you showed compassion for the patients you worked with. Having kind people like you, helped me to handle hearing the fact that I had failed another swallowing test. My life changed after that and I saw the world differently. I saw more joy in the simple things. I’m so thankful to be here. My husband and I got through a terrible time. I’m 43 now and enjoying my life with my husband and 6 year old son. I want a simpler life so I can have more fun with my family. This video touched my heart. Thank you!

One thing I recently discovered that has been hindering me on my journey toward a minimalist lifestyle is that my frugality gets in the way. I have been frugal most of my life and that makes it difficult in parting with things that aren't broken or parts I could use to make future repairs. This has saved me money over the years, but it has come with the mental cost from holding onto things. Decluttering has made me aware of my fault and now opening to idea of repurchasing items in the future if needed with an expectation that "freedom from possessions" should be worth the exercise.

  • @trudehill8508

I’m the same. I’ve already decluttered a lot with no problems, but now that we’re trying to be more frugal and watch our spending I’m finding it hard to part with things I know I’ll have to replace down the track. Even if it might be years before we need to replace it.

I watched this video soon after we got dark flooring installed all over our house except the hallway & kitchen 😮! But then, I decided to follow the other mistakes you mention like “focus on the now,” “don’t worry about what you can’t control,” 😅. I also decided to appreciate what I have and see goodness in what I have- dark floors tells me that there’s dust & dirt on the surface so, it’s a good thing knowing that I need to clean my environment 🙏

I am 46 years old and I have a 10-year-old daughter. My every day is a struggle, more mentally than physically. So I think that this should be No1 on your list, "Don't take anything for granted". I can really relate to this video. I went back for my Early Childhood and Special education degree at 40 (in 2021). It was hard work, but so worth it. It also helped me to slow down and figure out who and what was important in my life. Now that I am done (and waiting on an interview for a job), I am working on getting rid of stuff and organizing so I can focus on what I want/need to do. I still have additional work to do to complete my Special Ed. certification, but that will come with time. My main focus will be my health, simplifying my house (and hopefully job when I get it), and working on relationships that matter to me!

Marissa, I signed up for Mint Mobile just over a month ago when you suggested it. I can’t believe the savings and the coverage I get in my little rural town. Yesterday I signed up my stepdad and will be saving him money too. I probably wouldn’t have done it, had I not heard you mention it. So thanks!

Thank you for your previous work in helping people with swallowing problems. Before my late husband passed in 2019, he had suffered one or more strokes during multiple cardiac events in the hospital and was unable to swallow liquids for a while. Until then, I never knew that a SLP was responsible for something as critical as that. It was a big eye opener! ❤

For me the sound was much better after your microphone died. I listen via Bluetooth hearing device and your videos come mostly through my left ear. The right seems to be background music (?) Anyway I enjoyed the video. 😊

I completely agree with this dark floor thing. We had dark floors in our old place, and I vacuumed every single day, just to see all the crumbs and cat litter lying around again seconds later. Last year we moved to a new place which has light floors, and I don't feeel the urge to vacuum every day now and only clean up the spaces where cat litter and cat hair tends to accumulate.

This is one of your best! I'm forwarding it to daughters and best friend!! and going to watch again myself. HAHA I have dark floors (deep red glazed quarry tile) in condo we bought 20 yrs ago. thought so cool at first but yuck! so hard to clean and constantly sweeping up in the kitchen! It would take a jackhammer to get them out so just dealing, but would never recommend. thanks for all you do!

Thank you so much for that video. Tbh, I need to be reminded from time to time to think of all those things as things that aren't helpful for me, but instead choose to stop my real life just out of fear for the change, for what I need to do and for failing. So, to hear you say all the things I do know, but always ignore... helps me so much, 'cause it reminds me of the reasons why I should beginn to act instead of staying still. So, thank you so much! You don't even know how much this helps me. Have a wonderful 2024 and stay as wonderful as you are!

Nice video, thanks for the advice! By the way, do you have any videos about the Diderot effect? It happens to me when I'm entering a new hobby, for example, I quickly get dragged by the Diderot effect. Some advice on how to avoid it would be great (if there is some way). Thanks and happy new year!!

4:08 atomic habits by james clear touches on this. he literally shows a chart in the book about how 1% of effort daily can improve what you’re doing by an increase of 37% annually on average, but no effort at all literally does NOTHING for you

Coming from a family of very large people. My biggest regret is that I did not do extreme weight loss when I was younger because now if I do a weight loss which I have feared out my skin looks like that of a shriveled prune. The doctor has said that at 70 .my skin will always look terrible. No elasticity.
