20 Things You Must Stop Doing to Your Cat

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video, we will look at 20 things you should stop doing to your cat.
Don’t yell at them when they misbehave
You should never yell at your cat when disciplining them. It doesn’t work. You're just freaking out your pet. Especially when you are upset about something that has happened a while ago. Cats live in the moment and are incapable of associating any punishment with an action that occurred in the past. Your cat not only will get scared, but they will be very confused as well.
Don’t force them to interact with you
Cats are very independent creatures. They don’t like to be smothered with affection and they need some personal space every now and then. Make sure you provide them all the personal space they want. Likewise, provide your cat with a place where they can hide, be alone, and feel comfortable and secure.
Don’t make them hate their crate
Do you have trouble getting your cat into their carrier? It’s probably because any time your cat goes into a carrier, it’s to go to the vet. You can break this association by leaving your carrier open in your home. Your pet will sniff it, lie inside it, and all around get used to it.
Don’t bathe them
Cats are excellent at grooming themselves and they rarely need to be washed. If you decide to wash them, once or twice a year is enough. By washing your cat frequently, you’re doing them no favors.
Don’t hug them like a baby
When you pick up a cat and cradle them like a baby, they may feel vulnerable and want to find a place to get back to where they feel they are in control of their surroundings.
Don’t surprise them
You probably have watched videos of cats getting scared of cucumbers, but what actually happens is that your cat isn’t afraid of the cucumber itself, but it is the fact that the cucumber appeared next to them without them noticing it. Cats tend to be scared of the unknown, as it could represent a danger or predator, and in the case of a cucumber, a snake.
Although some may find it funny, surprises cause anxiety and fear in your cat. It’s best to look for other ways to have fun with your pet.
Don’t skip the vet
Regular check-ups are so important for your furbaby’s health. The vet can identify issues you might not even be aware of.
Don’t give bones to them
Contrary to what cartoons often show, house cats have no business gnawing on fish skeletons or any cooked bones. Cooked bones are a serious danger to felines because they can splinter and get stuck in a cat's throat or stomach
Don’t declaw them
This one is a must to avoid. Declawing is torturous to cats. It would be akin to cutting off our fingers at the last knuckle, leading to pain and mobility issues. It can even breed a sense of feeling vulnerable or defenseless.
Don’t stick with dry food
Many cats don't like water so they don't drink enough of it. Because of this, they are more prone to developing urinary crystals and even kidney problems. More often than not, this can be prevented simply by adding wet food to your cat's diet. You can even add a little water to your cat’s food.
Don’t dress up your cat
Don’t buy clothes for your pet just because they may look cute in them.
Halloween costumes and Christmas hats can be fun for people, but cats will be totally annoyed if you try to dress them up.
Don’t feed them milk
Although feeding cow’s milk to cats is thoughtful as a pet lover, it hurts them more than it helps. This is because most cats are lactose intolerant.
Don’t use essential oils
Essential oils can be toxic to cats whether ingested orally, applied to the skin, or simply inhaled. It’s because cats lack the enzymes that are needed to metabolize essential oils properly.
Don’t feed them more than the recommended daily intake
Improper feeding can lead to obesity, malnutrition and many health issues. Always monitor the calories in your chosen pet food and adhere to the suggested serving sizes.
It’s important to remember that food is not love, and feline obesity is on the rise.
Don’t use harsh cleaning products
Many cleaning products used in our homes are toxic to cats.
Even if your cat isn’t directly exposed to these products, they may run over a floor that has been mopped and then lick their paws and ingest those toxins. Always check the label. Any product that contains bleach or ammonia is hazardous to animals.
#3. Don’t ignore them
Your feline isn't actually as solitary an animal as you might think-even though it seems like they often want to be left alone most of the time.
Cats do enjoy interacting with their special humans and need routine socialization.
Don’t let them sleep all day
Just like dogs, felines need regular exercise to work off extra energy and stay healthy!
The best way to exercise a cat is by making them chase their favorite toys around the house. Interactive toys, like a wand toy with feathers, strings, or other prey-like attachments that evoke a cat’s predatory behavior are an excellent way to keep them fit.

My cats love to be held like a baby. The just sit in my arms without any force needed and love the attention. Plus my boy loves being held and walked around the house, seeing things from our level. However, I do agree with not doing it to your cat if they aren't used to it or don't want to do it. It depends on the cat's personality and forcing them can injure them. My cats also don't mind belly scratches despite most cats not liking them. They'll go on their backs, stretch and roll around, and get belly scritches. I'll also play with them by ruffling their bellies but never do this if you're not confident your cat won't hurt you or they don't like it. Again, my cats are big teddy bears and love playing like this and know not to bite too hard or dig their nails in too much. They also enjoy this rough housing and are the ones who controll how long it goes on for.

Cats love having their bellies rubbed but only from people they trust. I think how they're raised from has a lot to do with if they'll enjoy or tolerate being held. Need to start them as young as you can. My current cat and I are well bonded but she could also be a little stand offish. I get lots of cuddles, kneaded, groomed, shes an awesome lap cat. Just drapes herself on me, she insists on tummy rubs...but she hates head bunts. Shies away from them. As she matures things have changed. She seems to enjoy being held. She'll purr and recline in my arms...but her tail is also whipping so in conclusion cats are silly.

When they said not to cradle your cat like a baby, I think they mean on it's back with the feet up. Cats like to be able to feel like they are free to move when they want, and if they're on their back they can't. Some cats are comfortable enough with you that they don't mind being held on their back, but that's less common.

It’s a stupid and ridiculous example, simply not true. House cats don’t need them for climbing or protection, unless you’re a terrible owner, and they don’t miss them. In over 60 years of owning multiple cats, I can say this as a matter of fact and personal lifelong experience. I’ve loved all my cats deeply and they’ve loved me back. I held each one from birth until the vet had to put them down in their old age from debilitating sickness.

Once upon a time, back in the 90s, a family member owned a cat. One day this person saw their children playing with the cat, putting the face up close to the cat. The person freaked out and understood that in order to let their kids safely play with the cat, the cat had to be declawed. So without telling anyone, this person took the cat to the local vet, and declawed the poor creature. This cat was never the same, and I was the first one to notice the strange change in behavior. It broke my heart. The cat became hostile towards the family members, specially to the one that kidnapped and drive to the vet, I also became hostile to this family member, but who cares about what a kid got to say right? Smh. One day, the cat couldn’t take the suffering and betrayal anymore and fled the house. With no claws to fight or hunt, the cat embarked in a journey, it understood that the cruel outside world was paradise compared to the atrocities endured back at “home”. Weeks went by, but the cat never came back. One day we found an animal, flattened out on the pavement in one of the streets of the neighborhood, as if it was some sort of street art. There it was, the cat that never came back. It broke my heart, I never wanted to own a cat until now. 20 years later I have my own, and anyone who dares hurt my cat, will get declawed, I’ll be doing the declawing.

The only reason I'd wash a cat was if their fur was covered in a harmful substance. (Hasn't happened to our cats though.) P.S. If you even THINK about "declawing" (=mutilating) a cat, you are NOT a cat person. Don't get a cat. Cats do have claws. I never imagined declawing a cat but i do cut his claws when they get too long or when he scratches something or someone and gives a bleeding wound, which could be dangerous. He is totally fine with it as long i am gentle with him and dont cut too far. My cat doesn't like to be held like a baby but he does enjoy being held the right way and usually he knows it can lead to treats or food. When i smell that he has poo in his claws is the time i usually wash them, in not so cold or too hot water and gently with soap. After a long dirt bath outside he gets a shower but that is really rare since he cleans himself well usually. He is soon 16 but in good health and i wish to have him as long as he would have me in his life.

I NEVER see any cat or dog love the noises, instead they really scare when fireworks or thunderstorms probably your cat ears damage, since your house always had a loud noise from TV movies, loud musics and watch games.. so he had NO choice to avoid it and his ears damaged. Cat and dog ears are very sensitive that is reason why they could hear the sound of another cat walk but we can not hear it.

Her hearing was fine, she was just a very bizarre cat; to name a few, played fetch, sat for her dinner & barked like a sea lion instead of meowing (but she could meow when someone else was watching!). As soon as she heard the thunder or fireworks she’d run to sit in the window to watch it. My other cat isn’t bothered by it either. Growing up most of our dogs didn’t mind thunderstorms either. So not all cats & dogs are scared by thunderstorms.

I only shout at my dog when facing a dangerous situation and I need him to freeze, for example. There is nothing worse than people who constantly yell at their dog, it just shows that they have no idea how to train a dog. #19: "Don't yell at them when they misbehave." This admonition is instantly undermined when you say they don't remember the behavior you're yelling at them about. Duh! Of course. No negative reinforcement is going to work if the pet doesn't connect the behavior with the punishment. So, you totally miss the issue on whether yelling would be effective if done in the moment when the cat is misbehaving.

If he does something wrong I can scold him and he certainly knows the word "no" or "stop" - and I scruffed him twice as a kitten to litter train him and that worked a treat, now he is big I would never, but when they are little its parental assertiveness. now one year later - if I call him he comes and we spend every moment just chilling with each other, we eat together, we sleep together, and he loves to eat bones on occasion, just make sure they're uncooked bones so they don't shatter.

Re: Essential oils I panicked when I heard that, because I use the plug-ins and wax melts that contain essential oils and I have used them for years. (Note: I have 2 cats who are just fine despite my using these). Anyway, I had to research this. For all who panicked like I did, don't worry if you use plug-ins like Febreze, Glade and Air Wick. Those are safe for use around cats. You just can't apply the oil directly onto their fur. Air spray is okay too as long as your cat is not in the room when it's in use. But the diffusers or automatic aerosol sprays or the spray plug-in that sends a constant stream of essential oils into the air at all times are not safe for your pet. They aren't even really that safe for you to be breathing in all the time. So if you are using an electric diffuser or one of those automatic aerosol sprays, that's probably what they're talking about stopping use on this video.

I find it necessary to cut my cat's claws. When I neglected to for a while when my baby was born, the cat's claws started to grow around and curled back into her paw pad, causing pain and would have gotten infected badly if I had waited any longer to cut them.

Here's a tip about scruffing. I watched a video about how to clip a cat's claws and every time this guy tried to hold the cat he would get all cut up and the cat would jump up and run away. THEN he scruffed the cat with his TEETH and the cat just sat very still and he was able to clip the claws in two minutes. I haven't tried it yet but I will because my vet just raised his price for clipping.

Just know the message that scruffing gives adult cats, as opposed to kittens being scuffed by their mothers. It could harm the relationship you have with your cat. Rather, showing your cat that nail clippings can be positive with treats and love is just as effective. I have had cats my entire life and I’ve never had issues clipping my cats nails. They don’t like it, but they sit and know when it’s done, they earn their reward.

#20 You don't yell at them when they misbehave, but you do talk to them sternly. They will usually get the message, since your friendly interactions with them give your voice a certain pitch, and being stern with them changes that pitch dramatically. And if that doesn't work, a spray can certainly will. It sprays air and gives off a sort of hissing sound. All 3 of my cats are scared when I hold up the can, so after using it one time, I rarely ever have to use it again. #17 I cradle mine like a baby, but only because I started doing it when he was a kitten and he's used to it. He makes it known that he loves it by stretching out and purring real loud. Of course, whenever he moves like he wants down, I let him down. #14 If you do it right, scruffing is not painful for the cat. And sometimes it is necessary. Just to keep them still when you need them to. Like, for the vet. #13 If you want your cat to have something to keep its teeth busy on, get a chewing stick for them. You can find them in most pet stores. #12 Just trim them maybe once a month. That'll keep their claws from hurting you or anyone else. #10 The only time it's okay to "dress up" your cat is when putting a harness on them to go walk outside.

I've owned multipe cats throughout my life and I had them all declawed. They didn't seem to mind at all and were back to normal within a week of their declawing. All lived to ripe old ages too (the oldest was 15). Just be gentle with them after the surgery, make sure not to have rough litter in their litter box, and within a week or so they'll be fine. Honestly, they don't even seem to notice their claws are gone. Declawing is necessary as cat claws carry a lot of bacteria harmful to humans. Also, when a cat scratches, they LOVE to go for the face and eyes of whatever it is they are angry at, including you. I tried leaving my last cat with his claws. One day, I was just sitting on the couch when he decided to run up and attack my face and went right for my eyes and nicked my cornia. I was lucky I closed my eye when I did or I would have suffered permanent damage to my eye. If you don't want to declaw your cat, that's your problem, but I will get mine declawed.

I know pregnant ladies should avoid cats' excrement but that is not helped by declawing. I take my cat walking so I know where he has been. It is not in cat's nature to automatically attack the owner. There is always a trigger and it is very often easy to find. I live in a country where vets never declaw cats and there are no serious injuries to humans. At the moment I live with a cat who knows he may pet my face if he keeps the claws in.

  • @bettyhappschatt3467

It will be your cats' problem. I do not believe the claws have anything to do with the bacteria. The paws can carry things in too. I always go out with my cat so I know whare he has been. As long as you wash your hands before starting to cook you will be fine. It is not in cat's nature to attack humans. There is always a trigger that can be fixed. My cat knows he must keep the claws in when he touches my face to get attention. Sometimes he kneads and I need to trim the claws to protect myself from hurting. I live in a country where vets refuse to declaw cats because it causes both psychological and physical problems (the paw needs claws for support and declawing can cause arthritis) I suggest you look for a very docile breed (British shorthair, Ragdoll etc) and you can forget about declawing.

@Lone Wanderer If you‘re paranoid about your cat „scratching your face and your eyes“, just don’t keep a cat. No animal has to suffer because some sociopath thinks „Well, I want to have this animal, but I don’t like their claws, let‘s remove them“. And to be very clear: Someone like you shouldn’t keep any animal. I have two tomcats and I had cats before them, never once has one of them tried to attack my face. So either you’re just lying or your cat hates you, and who would blame her? But I guess I‘ll take „Things that never happened“ for 500, you just torture your cats because you don’t want them to harm your furniture. You’re an animal abuser, and that’s the whole truth about you, and I really hope you don’t have kids. To be honest, I‘m pretty sure you don’t have kids ..

Declawing removes part of their bone. It's totally inhumane. Imagine getting the top of your finger cut off for no reason. Plus, when a cat stretches and puts it's claws out to scratch they are stretching the muscles in their backs. There's a reason why it's illegal in some places. It's 100% unnecessary and disgusting no matter your excuse. If you don't want a cat to scratch then teach them. It might take a lot of patience but it can be done. If you can't have a cat without declawing them first then you shouldn't have a cat in the first place. You need to get a calm breed (my boy is half ragdoll and he is a cuddle bug) and teach them at a young age what is and isn't acceptable. Cats shouldn't be attacking you randomly and for no reason. There's always a reason.

@@EchoGhost10100 Oh grow up. Imagine my finger getting cut off? I dont have razor sharp claws on the ends of my fingers and rip into stuff for no good reason. Teach a cat? Oh, so teach them not to get a bug up their ass for no reason and start attacking things and "teach" to break several million years of instinct. Listen, cats arent these sweet, domesticated little angels you think the are. Why do you think cats go feral so easily? Humans have only been keeping them as pets for roughly 10,000 years, unlike dogs whom we have been breeding and modifying through eugenics for over 50,000. Your cat is still that same predator in the wild it was before humans came along. Their wild instincts are very much still intact. When your cat ambushes you, that is them legitimately hunting you. Cats arent these fragile little babies either. They are tough and adaptable. They lose their front claws, they learn to rely on their back ones more. They also still have their sharp, needle like fangs as well which are designed to puncture deep into tissue and inject their saliva with, if you didn't know, contains infectious bacteria. So even a cat with no front claws is still able to defend itself. The problem is you people who see cats as the equivalent of humans. You substitute them for actual children which is pathetic. You fail to see the cat for what it actually is, an animal. It is a beast which you have deigned to bring into your home therefore it must bend to your will to fit your life. Instead you bend your life to fit the beasts and you make excuses for it because "its your baby". That is your mistake, and a foolish one at that. The problem, especially for people like you, is you don't actually understand cats or animals in general. You impose your delusions onto the animal instead of understanding the nature of the beast.
