Cats are cute, cuddly, and a lot of fun. But if you have never lived with a cat before, you may be in for a few surprises. Here are 14 things I wish I knew before getting a cat.
Cats are not low-maintenance
The first thing you should know before getting a cat is that cats are not as low maintenance as you may have heard. These animals require a lot of play, stimulation and enrichment, especially if you’re adopting a kitten. Kittens have a lot of energy. That is why many people suggest adopting two kittens rather than one.
They are crepuscular
Another thing you need to know about cats is that they get very active at night.
Cats are crepuscular animals meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. So don't be surprised if your cat gets crazy zoomies and starts running around the house and jumping on your face when you're getting ready to go to bed.
Clay litter is not the best choice
Many cat owners use clay litters. But there are better alternatives. But clay litters may produce silica dust.
There's also lots of toxins and chemicals in the clay litter. Pine litter or wood pellets are better alternatives. These litters smell good, they are compostable, healthier, less messy, and they effectively control the odors.
Cats are insanely obsessed with their humans
Cats have a reputation for being aloof and antisocial, but they are actually very affectionate with the people they like, and they need regular social interaction with their human.
Of course, this has to be on their schedule. Don’t be surprised if your cat drops a toy on your head at 3am or knock your phone over when they decide it is time to cuddle.
Many cats will follow their owners from room to room because they look to them for company and love.
You have to trim their nails, and they hate it
Your cat's claws will grow long and sharp, so you will need to trim them every two weeks.
Another thing you need to know is that many cats turn into a crazed animal at the sight of the nail trimmers. Introduce nail trimming to your kitten's routine from a very young age and make it a normal part of their month so they get use to the procedure.
Some people use cruel tactics like declawing, but declawing is torturous to cats.
They bite you often.
Unexpected biting, even while your cat is playing with you, is a very common occurrence.
Cats bite for a variety of reasons. They may bite out of fear, to assert dominance, or to demand attention. Cats may even bite you to show you affection, but often with gentle and more controlled nibbles.
But remember, never use your hands to tussle or wrestle with your kitten as that may teach them inappropriate interactions such as clawing and biting at human fingers!
You will need to start in a small room
Keep in mind that it is normal for cats to hide for the first few days because they are yet to get accustomed to all the new sounds, sights, and smells, and warm up to their new environment.
When you bring a new cat home, it's important to put them in a small enclosed room or area. A smaller area allows you and your pet to get to know each other without your cat running away and hiding.
They get into everything
The next thing you should know before getting a cat is that they get into everything, like your drawers, cabinets, the dishwasher, sinks, or even chimneys. It's really easy to lose a cat so you may want to get a collar with a bell on them so you can keep track of where your pet is in your house.
You will need to setup a schedule
Cats are creatures of habit, and they depend on us to keep their surroundings stable and predictable. Any change in their daily routine or environment can cause them to stress out. Feeding a cat at regular times provides the security and predictability of a routine.
Milk may upset your cat's stomach
Although feeding cow’s milk to cats is thoughtful as a pet lover, it hurts them more than it helps. This is because most cats are lactose intolerant.
You don’t need to buy them expensive toys
You can buy your cat some really cool toys, but most cats find more joy in playing with simple household items like toilet paper rolls, boxes, crumpled papers, hair ties, and socks. Give these objects to your cat and they will love you for it.
They chew up everything
The next thing you need to know before you adopt a cat is that cats can chew up your plants, cords, wires, you name it.
On that note, keep in mind that cats get into everything and on everything. They tend to knock over everything, including cups, plants, candles, and their water bowl.
You will need to keep your windows closed
Windows without screens pose a great threat to your cat when they're open. Every year, animal hospitals treat cats who have fallen from great heights, often out of windows of multi-story buildings.
You will need to say goodbye to your blinds.
For cats, a window perch can be an endless source of entertainment. TMake sure to leave your shades open for their benefit.

I am a first time cat dad. I was also under an impression that cats are low maintenance compared to dogs. But nah, my kitty was really sad and sleepy (coz he was bored) on the first few days. Apparently, I didn't play with him enough. I now play with him at least 30 minutes a day. He's now seemingly happy and content. One tip I can give is that don't get fooled by those Instagram videos where they show cats that cuddle with their humans. Because I learnt that not all cats do that! It's been a month since I adopted my 6 months old kitty. He still doesn't want to cuddle. He only allows one kiss a day, then sleeps next to me at night only when he feels like it. I once put him next to me to sleep, he ran away. I respect his personal space. But he makes sure that he loves me by purring, sleeping near me, etc. I wish him 30 years of healthy and happy life! ❤❤❤

Cats definitely have different personalities like dogs. I've owned a few cats over the years and many dogs cause my parents preferred dogs. Personally I'm not much a dog person unless it's certain breeds. I hate yappy dogs and one who are to stubborn to train. My fave dog are bichons, Maltese, and havanese. They are lap dogs and quiet and smart. Like cats of the dog world. Depending on the breed of cat also can help with a higher chance of personality your looking for. It's obvious ur not super cuddly cat loves you if they are sleeping by you and follows you around constantly. If u ever get a second cat, it would be great for them and for u. And I suggest getting a Persian. Yes you have to brush them daily to avoid tangles. But they are so lovey and love to be pet, kissed and snuggled. Maine coons are one of the breeds in the Persian family. I own currently a year old American short-hair dilute calico female named nala, and a 6 month old American gray short-hair female named Padme. Nala is a stinker at times but loves people and is not super cuddly. She is cuddly on her own terms. Mainly in the mornings and evenings at feeding time. Padme is cuddly whenever and purrs the second you pick her up, but she is not a people person and hides from strangers until she gets to know you. Both we rescued. Our first cat nala became more cuddly with us after we got padme. So getting a second cat may help change ur cats behavior a bit in a positive way.

Good luck with your first kitty… I’ve rescued so many now that I’ve probably seen every personality going lol all the ones I rescue love cuddles and that’s cos of my teen daughter. She grabs a kitten every ten mins and holds them out in front facing her, and talks to them then brings them in for cuddles and they love it when she sits at their level on the carpet/floor and plays with them! They totally and absolutely love her to but whereas I don’t get time for all that and get less from them. Ours sometimes jumps on our shoulders and kiss our noses lol awww. Not sure about the 30 years mind you, 18-20 years of you’re lucky I’m afraid. Some breeds are younger than some when we lose them x

He now wants kisses and cuddles whenever he wakes up from sleep lol. I will defiantly consider adopting a Persian cat once I move to a larger apartment so they both can be friends. I might go on a vacation at the end of this year. I can arrange a pet sitter or boarding… but I’m worried that my kitty will miss me. I must get a second cat so they’ll have each other when I’m away. ❤️

@@lisajhay4387 thank you so much for the wishes. I was pretty nervous adopting my first cat. Now I’m super confident that I can adopt a second one so they both can be friends. So far my kitty (domestic shorthair) started pouring so much love to me and to my parents! My mum is like your daughter… she picks him up whenever he allows and talks to him. When she does that he slowly blinks at my mum which is so adorable! I am planning to go on a vacation this year end for 4 weeks - is that too much? I can get a pet sitter or find a perfect cat boarding. But I’m nervous that my kitty would miss me and my parents. I hope adopting a second kitty will make things smooth. Yeah I just learnt that cats living until 30 is super rare. I just want my kitty to live his life to the fullest! 🥹

@@தமிழோன் No problem. Yes, cats do miss there owners. My cats always greet me happily when I get home and snuggle up to my sister when I'm gone patiently waiting for my return. When I get home they greet me at the door and nala is a talker while padme is quiet and just rubs against my legs. Nala always vocalizes with me. Its really cute how she purr meows. She is very intelligent. I have to keep a eye on her. She knows how to open sliding doors and drawers. She also plays fetch and can shake paws like a dog. Anyhow, I do suggest a friend or family member coming every day to give them attention and make sure they have fresh water and food.
As a multiple cat owner over several years, I can attest that this video is possibly one of the best cat videos in terms of the accuracy and relevance of the information it provides. Each and every point is totally true and also extremely important to know for the health and happiness of your pet

It's still important to get the cat an expensive toy...so you can leave the box that the toy came in for the cat to play with.

I had places for them to scratch in every room. They're lazy and won't go someplace else to scratch. I also put catnip on the post!! I ALSO used a different texture to everything else in the house; sisal rope wrapped around it. Their paws are very sensitive and they can tell where mommy wants them to scratch. they never scratched anywhere else. I trained them stay off the counters and tables too. You CAN train your cats just keep at it. Works best with kittens too. Don;t let them bite and play rough with you when they're small and it's cute or they'll do ti when they get big and you will be sorry. Your hand is not a toy!!!

As some who has owned 3 cats First-3 yrs Second -10 Third-15 I was usually helped by my parents (Like vet cost) but when I turned 15 I had to pay for them myself I'm planning On getting a cat after college.

Number two is exactly right - I paid $1300 for some shades on my picture window in January. I got a kitten in June. I can't use my shades as they are very tempting to my cat. Oh well.. I still love him.

#15: If you're going to adopt a cat, I highly recommend prioritizing getting females rather than males, unless you've money to spare. Males are many times more susceptible to a condition called FLUTD. What happens, is that a blockage occurs in a male cat's very tiny urethra and makes it impossible for him to pee (this almost never happens in females). This is fatal if not treated quickly, and it's also expensive, a minimum of $2000 on the first vet visit, and even after the blockage is cleared, it can easily happen again (it did with mine, and the second visit was $700). This is doubly true if you're a first-time cat parent, as stress (due to making newbie mistakes) can be a factor in causing FLUTD. Play it safe, get pair of female kittens if possible/practical. Get them fixed early, as soon as they are old enough before their first heat and you'll be fine.

Me too! I never had to trim any of my cats nails. That's what the scratch pads are for. Get good ones.
Have had cats for 50 years and have never trimmed their caws, they have places to scratch so not necessary
My cats have scratching post but I still have to clip their nails. They are sharp!! My first cat hated her nails clipped. (One year old and one 6 month old) So I trained her now to let me clip em when she is relaxed n sleeping in her bed. She just glances at me and is like "what are u doing?" I quickly clip a couple paws of claws and she purrs. I let her sniff the clipper also. She don't like me pressing on her paws long tho to retract her claws, so I'll come back later in the day and get the back claws.

You don't need to trim cat's claws funny story sometime I went into bed then I felt something really sharp on my foot turned out it was just up a cat claw that I've fell off but it really hurt my foot😢😢😢😂

Do NOT get a collar with a bell on it. It is VERY stressful for the cat
I need an answer. My sister’s friend is gonna give me a kitten in 3 months. My mom told me the cat has to stay in my room all day everyday. My room is not big. I would like to know if it’s ok for my kitten to live in my room it’s whole life and for me to leave him alone plenty of hours a day.

.... $60 for 40lb? What? I get the clumping Tidy Cat in the 40lb buckets for $20 at Walmart. And, while I'd love to move to pine litter, I can't because my cat has urinary issues and it's important I keep track of how often he goes to the bathroom, and how much he produces. If I start seeing small infrequent clumps, I gotta keep a close eye on him to make sure he's not blocking up again. Can't do this with pine litter. I've yet to try it (I will at the end of the month), but I've heard that putting some baking soda on the bottom of the pan helps with odors if you can't do the pine litters. Also, another nice thing about the 40lb buckets, is you can keep the empties and use those to put the used litter clumps into when you scoop em out. The buckets have airtight lids that you can keep closed.

Don't get a collar with a bell on it that's so inhumane. Cats are pretty easy to find all you have to do is call their name and associate that with a positive experience like food treats pets and play time since they're young, they'll come to you everytime. Cats have routines and are easy to socialize.

If I hadn’t put a bell collar on my kitten he’d have been squashed by my wheelchair by now! The bell also saves the lives of native animals (although my cat is an indoor lad).

Not just that collars might get the cat strangled, their ears are so sensitive, the bell will be hell for them! Imagine you live next to a church, the church bell is loud, but only ring at certain times. Now imagine the bells would ring with every move you make. Would you like that? I don't think so! About birds they might chase... A rainbow-colored paper collar will do - and won't mean a thread to your cat.

I hear it all the time in cat videos and it bugs me too.
Please, NO COLLAR WITH A BELL ON IT!! Cats hearing is very sensitive and a bell on them will be VERY DISTURBING. This should not be advised at al for cats.

If you have scratch poles, you will never need to clip nails. Also, my wife bought a $100 cat tree and never used it. They much prefer shoe boxes.

My cat has scratch poles and scratch pads.Which she uses a lot. Still needs claw triming. Has a 100$ cat tree which she uses constantly. Also has a box if she chooses

Make sure that you're worth it. You might want a cat but a cat might also not want you because it can tell you're a P.o.S person. Someone who gets rid of a pet over an apartment is a piece of shit, no exceptions. Someone who declaws their cat is a piece of shit and needs to be charged with Animal Abuse.
