Rare dogs have been the point of interest of every dog lover because of their unique and unusual features. No matter what kind of dogs you like you’ll for sure fall in love with these exotic lesser-known dogs. From exquisite looks to fantastic abilities, here are the rarest dogs in the world.
1. Merle Bully
Pitbulls are handsome dogs as they are but when it's a Merle pitbull, it's hard to keep your eyes off them. It refers to a coat that is one color throughout the whole body with splotches of another color They may not be the rarest dog breed in the world but they are pretty rare and expensive dogs. By expensive, we mean really expensive. These are triple the price of a non-merle pitbull ranging from $10,000- $30,000. Merle Pitbulls are becoming a bit more common these days because of the huge profit they bring for the breeders.
2. Catalburun
The unusual trait of this rare dog breed is pretty obvious by its name. It’s a Turkish name in which the "Catal" means fork and the "Burun" means nose. So the main feature of this dog is its very distinctive double nose. Apart from the out-of-the-ordinary look, these rare dogs are super devoted to their pet parents and have good skills in tracking and pointing. They are also good hunters who hunt silently to avoid spooking their prey. But Catalburuns also aren’t completely free of problems.
3. Tibetan mastiff dog
The Tibetan mastiff is not the best option for the first time for owners and those who live in urban areas. The naturally aloof and stubborn dogs can be high maintenance. Even if someone does have the proper experience and space for these cute little fluff balls, they have to pay a huge amount of money because they are one of the most expensive dog breeds. This dog ranks 132 of 197 by the American Kennel Club as the American Tibetan Mastiff Association is a member of the club. So they might be actually worth the golden price tag that they come with. They are also one of the biggest dogs you’ll ever see when they grow up.
4. Thai Ridgeback
The Thai Ridgeback gets its name from its unusual hair growth pattern. As one might guess from the name, the hair grows back in the opposite direction in this weird dog breed which causes ridges on its skin. With its muscular medium-sized body, tear ears, markings on the tongue, wedge-shaped snout, and dark brown almond-shaped eyes the dog looks really handsome. Thai Ridgeback is one of the rarest dog breeds in the world because of its unique hair formation. But that’s not all that is great about these four-legged cute creatures.
5. Presa Mayo
Presa Canario is one of the rarest and most dangerous dog breeds in the world. Their stern look and strong body are a giveaway that this dog is not to be messed with. They have a large head, heavy rectangular body, cropped ears, and a short coat. At the same time, these somewhat aggressive traits also make them a bit stubborn and dangerous dogs. But fear not, with proper dedication and care they can turn into one the best pet canines you can ever have. As the Perro de Presa Canarios are a hyperactive breed of dogs, they require a lot of workouts. Presa Canarios are one of the best dog breeds you can have.
6. Swedish Vallhund
The Swedish Vallhund is by far the most ancient dog on our list. This one goes all the way back to the 800s. They were specifically bred over a millennium ago to be working and herding dogs. People back then used the Vullhunds to hunt down rats, herd cattle and protect their owner's homes. The most amazing fact about this strange dog breed is that, unlike other regular dogs, their puppies can be born with or without tails. Some of the pups have full-length tails and some have stub tails with their short-legged body.
7. Mudi
If you have a love for black, you’ll love Mudi, one of the rarest dog breeds. There are only about a few thousand of these around the whole world. They’re not very popular in America but they are well known in certain parts of Europe. They are quite friendly as puppies but as they grow older, they become more and more aloof with a serious personality. The Mudis aren’t cheap either. Because of the low numbers, they come with a hefty price tag. Their puppies are one of the rarest dog breeds in the whole world.
8. Royal Bengal Dog

A farmer from Karnataka's Shivamogga also dyed his dog's hair mimicking a tiger in an attempt to scare away the monkeys that have been destroying his crops. These are both equally weird dogs to look at.

I've not seen the Azawakh on the list of dogs who have brindle coloring. As to the Catahoula, my uncle had one. She was fairly relentless about herding my cousin. My cat who didn't appreciate being sniffed whacked her on the nose and Rosie avoided her like the plague the rest of the week.
I like the 2 biggest breeds of dogs the best .
I was born in Texas and raised in Louisuana. The Louisiana Leopard dog is extremely intelligent and are very loyal to one person. The female we had was termed as a Blue Leopard Cur, she was my little Brother's dog in every concept imaginable. My parents couldn't scold him outside the house unless they wanted to be half mauled by her. She was extremely protective of him. She did NOT like certain people and would more than likely not let those people onto our property unless a close Family member went out and bought the person inside with them. They are also used as hog dogs in Louisiana. However several years ago I learned about Tibetan Mastiffs and it is an extreme desire to own for myself. They're very beautiful animals, large, protective, and territorial, yes, loyal and intelligent, more so. I seriously would love to have one.

The dog that amazes me the most is the Samoyed. We used to raise, train and breed them. They are intelligent, good with kids and other animals and can adapt to any climate, provided you do not shave down their double layered coat. It's there for a reason. It is a primitive breed, which means, due to its geological isolation, its closest relative is the Siberian wolf. They are named after the Samoyed people there. The name means "self sufficient." Be aware though, because they are extremely intelligent, they are escape artists, especially if you have more than one. They will actually plan their escapes ahead of time. I have tales. 😉

I lived briefly on the coast of China near Qingdao. There was an island on the coast that had been a fishing colony but only had one operational marina when I lived there. The owner of the Marin had two Tibetan Mastiffs, it was a joke how many tourists reported seeing bears on maidao Island.

Catahoula Leopard Dog, more commonly known in the Great State of Louisiana as the Catahoula Cur.

I have a natural tiger dog, his breed is Pitbull and Boxer and he can't bark. He whines and talks alot. I thought he was a Benjia when I got him.
Quite a few of these breeds aren't that unusual to find. At least not if you know about the dogs around the world. That they are rare in the US, doesn't mean they are rare in the rest of the world.

I thought dreadlock-dogs were a breed called the Puli, native to Hungary. Perhaps other herding societies developed their own variation.

You got the presa wrong thats not a presa canario..the presa mayo is a cross between a presa canario , bull terrier, and the american staffordshire terrier...Its similar but very different..Not the same breed..

Why are they so expensive even if there just normal dogs with different color
There are no breeds that have cropped ears naturally. It's not something that's done for the dog, it's done while the dogs are puppies because humans think it makes the dog look "tougher", it's ridiculous and an unnecessary action against the dog.

Why in the world would police be worrying about and wasting their time attempting to apprehend the person or people responsible for the artificial coloring of a dog's fur to mimic the stripe and color pattern of a tiger? Do they not have more productive feats to aspire to?
Btw your wrong the royal bengal dog is not the 1 rarest dog breed the true 1 rarest dog breed is the norwegian lunderhund and heres why they are so rare: they nearly became extinct when small island faners and fishermen began catching puffins with nets, lunderhunds started becoming obsolete. the government also started levying taxes on lunderhunds so many residents could't afford to keep them anymore. There are only 1400 norwegian lunderhunds left. so the royal bengal dog is not the 1 rarest dog breed
